Apr 12, 2012Wow my ReadyNAS Ultra won't start anymore
I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 4 ... i bought it only a few months ago, it's brand new and i barely used it
Today i tryed to start it... The blue LED light and the LCD screen powered up, then it power downs... It did that during a few minutes then shut down by itself
Now my ReadyNAS Ulra just won't power up.... When i press the power button nothing happens. No LED light, no LCD screen, no fan noise, nothing...
I can't believe i spent so much for this thing and it blew up so quickly... i thought i was buying quality when paying twice the price of other NAS.
Worst of all is that i don't even have a backup and i have 12terabytes of files. I didn't backup yet because this ReadyNAS is new and i didn't have the time to do it yet.
I hope it's just the power supply or something because i will never ever buy Netgear products again. It's so expensive i thought at least it would be reliable. This thing has less than 100 hours of use maximum and it already doesn't work anymore.
if it's just the power supply, can i buy a replacement and install it myself ? So i won't have to pay $100 to ship back the NAS to Netgear and wait 2 months to get it back ?
Now if i RMA this shit, i suppose that i will lose everything on my HD ? Because when i will put the drives in the new NAS, it will format them, right ?
How can i recover my datas on the failed ReadyNAS now ?
I spent thousands of dollars with netgear and i will never ever buy a netgear product again if i lose everything.

- Retired_MemberHow could i check the SMART status of my HDD without messing with netgear's filesystem and without access to ReadyNAS ?
I just remembered that i posted a list of the SMART result of my 3tb drives here:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=61721&p=346453#p346303
With a little bit of luck (assuming i posted the SMART result in the correct order) i could find which one of my removed drives is #2 and #4
If everything else fails, i found a company doing ReadyNAS data recovery
http://www.retrodata.co.uk/data-recover ... -recovery/
Just hope it won't cost me thousands of dollars... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredKeeping the drive order the same is strongly recommended. If all drives are fine rearranging them should be O.K.
Have you downloaded the logs zip file from the NAS back when it was working? If so do you still have it? - Retired_MemberWell if i could get the SMART status of my drives, or the date the drives were initialized then i could figure the correct order. Is it possible to get those infos if i plug the drives on my computer ?
No i have not downloaded the logs files and i can't get them now that my NAS isn't working anymore :( - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could see if NetGear could get a L3 tech to remotely login to the replacement unit. Getting the SMART stats from the drives using tech support mode should be very easy. It should only take a L3 tech a few minutes or so once they login to get that info for you.
Not sure about if you connect the drives to your PC. - Retired_Member
a L3 tech to remotely login to the replacement unit.
But to do that i will have to put my drives in the replacement unit, and if i put them in wrong order it will wipe out all my datas :( - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt's highly unlikely to wipe out all your data if all the disks are fine. Rearranging the order is not recommended but should be O.K.
See the below quote from the FAQ (emphasis mine): http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_anotherNetGear wrote:
Although not required, it's always a good idea to keep the ordering the same.
If you're really worried you could ask support if a tech can remotely login and examine the situation. Tech support mode is a low level diagnostics mode and booting into this mode in itself doesn't touch the disks.
If you want to check the SMART stats connecting the drives to a PC, I think there are some free tools to do this. Haven't used any so I don't know how well they work. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWestern Digital's Lifeguard diagnostic will show you the SMART data. Since you have WD drives, that is probably the best tool to use.
- Retired_MemberYay ! I'm a little bit less worried now... Thanks MDGM !
I just bought 2x external 3tb drives, i will never ever forget to backup my NAS now ! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhen you do migrate the disks across, monitor the NAS in RAIDar (http://www.readynas.com/downloads). Once the NAS has booted when you click setup you should be taken to Frontview (web-admin interface of the ReadyNAS) in your web browser. If instead you get a dialog box with a prompt to choose RAID modes power down immediately.
Once the NAS boots fine download the logs and send them to NetGear support (they would provide you with instructions on how to send them). They can look at the logs and let you know if you got the ordering right or not. - mott1pubAspirantHI
My ReadyNAS NV+2 has stopped responding.
I have done the following..
Run Memory Testing for 8 hrs. without any errors...
Removed the Disks mounted them to my PC and verify that they function.
I can remove the disks and get the system to boot and go into Tech mode..
But it only stays up for a few hrs..
I have opened a ticket 18272800 and got responses from numerous techs for a week or so.
But have not gotten a response in the last 8 days.. I have left numerous questions asking for
an update.
But nothing..
How do i get responses?? Is there a level 2,3 I can contact for an update..
I suspect its dead.. But without an RMA i can not proceed..
Can anyone help??
