Nighthawk App

I am using the Nighthawk App on my iPhone and iPad and have both of these devices listed as 

trusted devices. I don't understand the primary device feature. Should iPhone be listed as primary on iPhone and iPad be listed as primary on iPad?

The primary device feature is to help with two-factor authentication and accessing your account.
