Before I order the EDA500 Expansion Chassis 5-Bay I want to verify if I can connect the EDA500 directly to my PC with Windows 10.
Can anybody help me with this?
Is there any compatibity list with the EDA500?
Thank you!

The combination EDA500 and StarTech.com 2-port SATA 6 Gbit/s PCI Express eSATA (PEXESAT32) WORKS!!!
But if you connect the second EDA500 to the second port of the PCI, it does NOT work.
Good luck to you all.
Thanks for the responses!

Re: EDA500 connecting directly to PC
It's designed to be connected to specific ReadyNAS models.
I've never heard of anyone whose used it with a Windows PC.

Re: EDA500 connecting directly to PC
Thanks, So, I understand it is maybe possible. I think the EDA500 is like a dockingstation, it should be possible. Any feedback if I am wrong.

Re: EDA500 connecting directly to PC
Certainly Netgear did not design it to be a general esata expansion, so I wouldn't go as far as saying it "should be possible"
I suspect the port on the PC would have to support the sata Port Multiplier functionality at the very least..

Re: EDA500 connecting directly to PC
My PC is connected with a USB 3.0 cable with the Belkin aluminium 4-poorts USB 3.0-hub, this hub is connected with 4 USB-drives and my PC can see 4 different USB-drives.
Why shouldn't see the EDA500 5 different HDD's if I connect the EDA500 (with 5 HDD's) directly to a SATA-port on the motherboard?
Or is there a esata-lock implented by Netgear? The latter I couldn't read anywhere.

Why do you insist that "it should be possible".. Netgear could have designed it that way, but did not. Might it still work that way in spite of not being designed to do so? Yes. Should it? I wouldn't go that far. Since there are ReadyNAS devices other than those listed as compatible with the EDA500 that have an eSATA port, I think it safer to assume that there is some kind of limitation enforced until somone proves otherwise.
Not every eSATA port supports port multiplication, so that could also be a limitation for your use. USB and eSATA are very different and your assumption that one should work like the other is not a good one.

US Amazon pricing for a new one is about $125. An RN316 is much more.
I have no need for one, but the price is tempting.

Re: EDA500 connecting directly to PC
I guess the EDA500 eSATA port has a port-multplier functionality. So maybe I can combine the Startech® 2 Port PCI-Express eSATA Controller Adapter Card (PEXESATA2) with the EDA500?

Maybe being the key word.
This isn't an intended use of the EDA500, and so far no EDA500 owner has chimed in to say whether it works or not.

So, should I try and update you? Or should I stop trying to use the EDA500 like I want to use as a dockingstation?
I think there are other people here who would like to know if this works. So if you choose to do a risk buy, please do post back.
Note that none of the folks posting on this thread work for Netgear (the Netgear folks who are active here haven't commented).
BTW, one of the EDA500 bays isn't electrically connected to the SATA bus - it is intended to hold a spare. So it's really a 5-bay unit with a storage slot.

Then it is a 5-bay unit with a storage slot, isn't it?
I will try and post back/update...

Yes - I've fixed my earlier post.
FWIW, there is a brief hardware overview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osAZODdTodo

Re: EDA500 connecting directly to PC
I almost sure it has, but can somebody confirm the eSATA port of the EDA500 has port-multplier functionality?
I ordered the EDA500 for a very good price and also ordered the Startech® 2 Port PCI-Express eSATA Controller Adapter Card (PEXESATA2).
I will receive it next week, hopefully...

I bought also that kind of NAS from Ibood.
Bought and eSATA card to put in the pc, it doens't recognize
Seems this NAS only work when it's conected to an other NetGear Nas like
This release of ReadyNAS OS supports the following ReadyNAS systems: • ReadyNAS 102 • ReadyNAS 104 • ReadyNAS 202 • ReadyNAS 204 • ReadyNAS 212 • ReadyNAS 214 • ReadyNAS 312

EDA500 is not a NAS, it's an expansion chassis.
And among the ReadyNAS models you listed, only the RN312 is compatible.

Maybe you want to look at purchasing a DAS, which sounds closer to want you're looking for.

RN102 does not support EDA500.
(If you have an issue not related to EDA500, please create another thread.)
