ReadyNAS NV - New power supply Power LED 3 fast flash

LED guide says: "OS image on NAND is corrupted, please perform NAND recovery through TFTP or USB"

This is a 10 year old, very reliable, Infrant ReadyNas NV -- yes, that old.  (-:

It's hard to find specific details on which USB recovery utility is compatible with this ancient unit. Can anyone point me at the correct FAQ/documentation for this unit?

Many thanks,

- Ben

Hello bmehling,

Try performing USB boot, please. If it gets the same issue, checking RAM might help as it could also be the one causing the problem.

Re: ReadyNAS NV - New power supply Power LED 3 fast flash

Just to verify, the LED pattern is:

Power LED: Pulsing (light intensity periodically changes. A few seconds before it enters into this state, it was blinking)

Disk LEDs:

Alternating between all four on, and only 3rd LED on.

The USB recovery utility for Sparc platform should still be available somewhere, I am going to search around as well.

Note: USB recovery needs 2nd stage boot loader working.

The 1st stage boot loader can do TFTP boot(Never touched after release)

The 2nd stage boot loader can do USB boot (May be updated after release) - Try to power on NV by pressing and hold power button for 15 seconds to see if LCD display different message at 5th, 10th, 15th second to verify if 2nd boot loader is good)

If 2nd boot loader is good, USB recovery should be able to recover the corrupted NAND

Re: ReadyNAS NV - Doesn't complete boot-up (LED activity suggests NAND recovery)

I apologize for the long delay between responses. Life/work had other priorities...

Yesterday I fired up the NV to verify the LED sequence was in fact indicating a NAND recovery was required. Not sure if this is better or worse, but after a few boot attempts I was only able to see the blue light fast blink. According the the LED sequence/translation document this indicates normal boot UNLESS the blinking continues beyond 30 seonds. In my case it continues indefinitely (over 5 minutes). That document suggests:

1) reseat memory (done)

2) perform NAND recovery (attempted, see below)

3) possible PSU problem (I do not think I've ever replaced the PSU so this seems a reasonable suggestion)

re: Nand recovery take 1 (in case others get stuck here)

- I grabbed the latest recovery image I could find (4.1.14), which appears to support Sparc-based systems. I see a relase note for 4.1.15, but can't find a recovery image.

- I dd'd it to a USB thumbdrive (64gb, USB3)

- Separate attempts using both the front and back USB ports

- Same result: after releasing the power button at the 20 second mark, the 4th drive light comes on after a few seconds... but then nothing. Power light blinking, 4th drive light on. I left it for a while (10+ minutes), but none of the other drive lights ever light up.

Nand recovery take 2

- Same as above, however I used an old USB stick (same era as the ReadyNAS!)

- This time the recovery performed as documented (drive lights did there thing, NAS finally shut itself down)

- When I fired it back up the power light fast blinked for > 5min; then after a while sent solid (just on)

However:

- the drive/act lights have not lit up at all -- I am not sure if I'm hearing the drives at all at this point, but occasionally hear something like head movement... just not sure.

- Not pinging on previous IP address

- RAIDar does not detect it

- Ethernet port does have a link (solid orange) and I see some intermittent activity (green blinking)

Any suggestions on next steps?  Is there a way to verify the PSU?  Is there a way to to get a terminal via USB or something (since network appears dead)?

Many thanks for any suggestions the community might have!

- Ben

Re: ReadyNAS NV - Doesn't complete boot-up (LED activity suggests NAND recovery)

Hello bmehling,

Please connect the NAS straight to the computer and ensure you are using a good known working LAN cable between them and that its both ends are securely plugged in.

RAIDar should still see the NAS with its default IP address if it does not have a manual configured IP address, even without any disks, RAIDar should still see it. Once it sees the NAS, put a static IP address to the computer's network settings. It should be with the same subnet of the NAS IP.

NV Serial Port.JPG

This ebay USB serial cable works with NV, Caution: The 5V wire must NOT be connected (otherwise, short to 3.3V)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PL2303HX-USB-to-TTL-RS232-COM-UART-Module-Serial-Cable-Adapter-for-Arduino-/...

Set serial console as 9600-8N1

You should be able to see what is wrong with the boot process.

If you type i right after you see welcome but before boot reason is displayed, boot loader will enter interactive boot mode, where you can type

nand

to load image  from on board NAND

usb

to load image from external USB (Assume that USB has raw image on it)

After image is loaded, type command

go 0x80004000

to boot from loaded image.

Re: ReadyNAS NV - Doesn't complete boot-up (LED activity suggests NAND recovery)

JennC-  to clarify this -- I'm assuming this must be a ethernet CROSSOVER cable, correct?  A straight ethernet cable wouldn't work...  This should be easy to try. Thank you.

Re: ReadyNAS NV - Doesn't complete boot-up (LED activity suggests NAND recovery)

This looks like a useful cable. Ordered.

Assuming I need to boot from a USB image -- you mention "raw image". Is that different than the process creating a bootable USB stick?

Any confirmation the version I'm using w/ my old Sparc-based ReadyNAS -- is 4.1.14 the right recovery image to be using?

Thanks!

Re: ReadyNAS NV - Doesn't complete boot-up (LED activity suggests NAND recovery)

Just a note about Ethernet cable:

All ReadyNAS ever made(Including thoese based on ancient Sparc processor) support automatic MDI/MDI-X configuration feature(auto sensing), crossover cable is not needed when NAS is directly connected to PC.

Note for USB boot:

The usb command should be same as USB boot triggered by power button, USB recovery image should work. Please let's know what is displayed in serial console once you receive the serial cable (Again, please don't connect the red 5V pin, just leave it not connected) Thanks.

Serial Cable worked perfectly. Thanks for point me in the right direction. Any suggested direction to take on the following boot log?  Thanks!

I booted normally (log below). I haven't started digging in on the specific/suspicious areas. Looks like a problem w/ one of the disks (or controller?):

Hello bmehling,

Does using LAN cable not make RAIDar detect the NAS still? And do you have full backup of the data?

I can try this again, but I don't think so. The start-up logging doesn't appear to start any services once he fails to mount the array.

Hello bmehling,

If it does, put a static IP address on the computer that is with the same IP range of the NAS' that shows up on the RAIDar so you will be able to access the shares and can back up the data.

Re: ReadyNAS NV - Doesn't complete boot-up (LED activity suggests NAND recovery)

For some unknown reason, the USB/serial device failed and I was unable to continue debugging. I've now got it running again. I went through the entire boot sequence monitoring via the serial connection. The sequence is the same as what I've pasted here. I left the unit running for a while. Every few minutes the following message is repeated:

*** timeout ***
PIO write data!

@JennC- I have a known working ethernet cable firmly plugged into both a computer and the ReadyNAS NV. The link lights are active. RAIDar never detects the ReadyNAS. I've left the unit on for some time (30+ minutes) and repeatly tried to 'rescan' with no results.

@c3po- Would booting from NAND or USB vs. the image on disk make a difference? It doesn't seem to have issues w/ the OS boot.

Any suggestions on the log details?  This looks the most troubling to me:

Re: ReadyNAS NV - Doesn't complete boot-up (LED activity suggests NAND recovery)

@FramerV- Thank you for researching!

@mdgm-ntgr- Given the age and uptime of the device, that's not surprising. It's been a while, but my recollection from the past was that a failed disk left the array running in a degraded mode. I recall being able to get into Frontpanel and review logs, disk errors, etc. At this point the whole unit fails to boot into an operating state.

Would you recommend removing the disk and attempting to boot? Alternatively, I could purchase a replacement disk and boot with that in place? What's the best way to confirm which disk should be removed/replaced?

Thanks for your assistance,

- Ben

You could test/diagnose all the drives in a Windows PC using  WinDFT for Hitachi drives, Seatools for Seagate drives or Data Lifeguard for WD drives
