As a long time Seagate user, I have to agree that this drive is to be avoided. Especially if you connect to the NAS with Macs. For some reason it seems to not like Macs. The problems this drive has had is one reason I expanded my NVX units with Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630 drives (along with the fact that the 3TB drives at the time were just about $20 more than the 2TB drives).
They may do fine in PC applications but seem to have problems in RAID configurations.
I've been running two of these drives in a ReadyNas NV+ V2 (Raid 0) for about a month now with no problems. I can access them from my MacPro running Lion with no problems.
Do you have Time Machine enabled to the NAS? I don't see the drives failing solely with Macs but with anything that causes a lot of disc access. For example using Rsync over ssh from a Linux box to backup a lot of very small files also causes them to drop out.
Download your logs (On the Dashboard, click Configure, then select Health > Logs > Download Logs). Extract the zip contents and look at disk_smart.log. This should indicate what the firmware revision is on each of the drives.

Both drives are running firmware version: CC3C
Based on the date codes, the drives were manufactured on 8/29/2011 & 8/30/2011 and have a site code of "SU".
I'm up to 98% capacity (only 41G free available) running regular Time Machine backups to this unit since March 15 with no problems.

I bought 4 of these to go with my new Ultra 4 having just consulted the HCL and before seeing this thread. When the system started building I got an error saying that the system could not build properly. I opened a matter with Netgear and set to work again (late night of course). When trying again it just said that one drive was not working. I removed that one and it built just fine. In the meantime I had read this thread and was quite reluctant to backup all of my data from my old NV+ to the new Ultra. In the morning, I called Netgear support and the guy actually told me that "we do not recommend that drive with the readynas and we are trying to get if off the HCL, but it is also sensitive as Seagate and Netgear are working hard to get it to work". I asked him if I should return the drive, and he said it could be a good idea. So I did, and bought 4 Hitachi Deskstar 2Tb instead. The Netgear guys said that they had the most problems with cheaper drives from Seagate and Western Digital but that Hitachi and Samsung drives worked better.
One of those drives was DOA and was replaced on warranty and since it had been discontinued, I now have 3 Hitachis and one Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 and it seems to work.
Hello, I see that this drive appears on the HCL for the ReadyNAS Duo, but not for the ReadyNAS Duo v2.
I have bought a ReadyNAS Duo v2, and I also bought 2 of these drives because the Amazon web site seemed to be saying "frequently bought with ..."
My Duo v2 seems to be functioning as a server, but is only offering ~4GB (backup) and ~4GB (media) Also, on the "system" tab I am unable to see any "volumes".
I am a complete novice to ReadyNAS, so I don't no quite what to expect here. Any comments or suggestions would be very helpful.
Due to the use of incompatible hardware, behavior may be erratic and unpredictable. I would suggest returning the drives if you can, and purchasing some that are compatible with the Duo v2.
I initially failed to install 2 of these drives in my Duo v2 using XRAID 2. However, the following sequence worked: . Reboot (factory settings) - see p17 of Hardware Manual . Launch Raidar, and select Flex-Raid, Raid 1 . Volume C is created, with 1841 GB 🙂 [please excuse multiple follow-ups to my earlier multiple-threads, but I wanted to spread the word. I am so relieved not to have wasted my money on un-usable drives !]
I have just had one small hiccup which I managed to fix. This may or may not be related to the disk type used. When copying large batches of files from my PC to the server, I kept getting "Error 0x80070027 : The disk is full". "Oh no, not again", I thought, suspecting that despite appearances I might still be limited to a few Gigabytes. I searched these forums and found the following add-on: http://www.readynas.com/download/addons ... .0-arm.bin I successfully installed it, and the server is now working like a dream (despite initial nightmare). When it is set up properly, this is a really nice piece of kit 🙂
