When I added a 5th drive I did not gain any space

When I added a 5th drive I did not gain any space

I have a ReadNAS 516 with the latest firmware. I had 4x 6TB WD RED drives installed on XRAID Raid5 and 16.3GB or storage. I added another 6TB WD RED drive and still only have 16.3TB and still on raid 5. Any idea what the problem is?

Well one option would be to backup your data, do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) and restore your data from backup.

In that case can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?

I sent the logs through yesterday. They only appear to cover a few days though.

Did you grab the full set of logs? They can be downloaded and are contained in a zip file.

Go to "System"  -> "Logs" --> click the "Download Logs" button on the left side.

Yes, thats what I did. Then emailed them per the instructions.

Could a firmware update have reset the logs?

Would the logs still show why only 16TB is available and not 21TB like all the information says there should be?

Re: When I added a 5th drive I did not gain any space

Thanks for the logs.

We truncate/rotate the logs over time and we download a limited number of lines of the logs when downloading them to ensure that the download isn't too big.

Some of the logs show what happens over time and some simply show the current state.

It appears at some point you had a volume called DISK1 which no longer exists, but the system thinks it is still there.

The disk you added is currently marked as a spare.

A firmware update would not reset the logs. However some logs may not survive a reboot and normal log truncation/rotation would also occur.

Re: When I added a 5th drive I did not gain any space

Thank you. That explains a few things.

I think the volume DISK1 was set up by the retailer who had no idea what they were doing and they disabled the raid thinking that was a better way to do it. I had to start again from scratch to undo what they did but I guess I didn't undo their work completely.

I am guessing I canot fix these issues myself?
