Thanks to those of you with helpful advice. I hope you can be helpful to antinode in being a better person. I solved the problem, which partially stemmed from the fact that I was changing services within the same company. I was still under the impression that I needed login credentials for cable like I did for DSL so I left that part of the setup intact. While the dynamic IP was enabled, what I needed to do was select the radio button that indicated no login was necessary.
I am currently on dsl with a separate modem. I have a cable modem installed and am trying to make the switch. My provider says I should select the option DHCP instead of PPPoE but DHCP isn't one of the options. I tried a factory reset without any luck. Ideas?

"one of the options" _where_? What, exactly, are you doing/seeing?

Not a useful problem description. It does not say what you did. It does not say what happened when you did it. As usual, showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or interpretations.

Not a very detailed description of that device, either.
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look for Documentation. Get the User Manual (at least). Read. Look for "Use the Internet Setup Wizard" and/or "Manually Set Up the Internet Connection" (where an alert read might see something like:
o Get Dynamically from ISP. Your ISP uses DHCP to assign your IP address. Your ISP automatically assigns these addresses.
Sound familiar?
Further reading might be helpful, too. (Look for "Troubleshoot"?)
In the router control screeon, go to the Basic tab, and then click Internet.
Under Internet IP address you want "get dynamically from ISP". This is probably what they mean by DHCP.
You may want to just go through the setup wizard. If you are not experienced with this, that is what I would recommend.
For DHCP on your local network (recommended) - you want the Advanced tab, Setup / LAN setup and Use Router as DHCP server...this just means that your devices in your house get a new IP address that is assigned by the router (rather than having a permanent / static one).

Not sure what the stream of questions and unhelpful full stream of junk is about other than someone trying to make like he knows more then any of us. Antinode seems to hang out to try to make the rest of us look like dumbies rather then being helpful.

Sadly, when you provide no useful description of what you were doing, the non-psychics in your audience might be slow to guess that you were doing anything like that. Hence the question(s).

On the bright side, only one of us posted a complete time-waster about configuring "DHCP on your local network", which would be almost unavoidable, and totally unrelated to a modem change. How helpful was that, would you say?
There are a lot of folks out there that are reaching out for help because they don't understand the topic. Belittling people because of this is not helping anyone.
If you think that you can help but need more clarity, then ask for the clarity... or just move on if the post doesn't warrant the effort.
And while I am not obligated to defend my answer in this thread, I chose to spend an extra 10 seconds to explain what DHCP was since this was referred to by the poster's vendor.
One thing to remember, when you introduce an old router to a new modem, whatever its flavour, it helps to wipe out the used router's memory of past liaisons with the other modem.
Do a factory reset and set up the router from scratch.

Or, don't do that, save all your LAN-related settings, and concentrate on the router's Internet settings, which may very well be all you need to change. As in this case, for example.
