Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

The roll back I did to version 1.0.9.6 four days ago still works. With the latest update only my download speed was slow, my lan and WiFi upload speed was good. I’m using the 5g WiFi connection. I hope NETGEAR sends out a fix soon for the download issue with the latest firmware

Same here. 1.0.9.6 is latest that stabilizes the WiFi speeds. Hope Netgear can get this fixed soon

Also waiting on this to be resolved.

Terrible QA and support from Netgear. Perhaps they are too busy stuffing more unwanted telemetry in the firmware.

These R7000s may be the last Netgear device I own. It is ridiculous having to run older, less secure firmware versions just to have the device work properly.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

I should have come here first before updating! This is a load of crap, how this can happen. I rolled back to previous version and i get same slow wifi results. I used to get 180Mbps now im lucky if I get 40Mbps on 5Ghz. Is there a last version known that works good and should i have factory reset router before applying update? this is such a pain, this will most likely be the last Netgear device I will ever own. Such a let down with no response on eta of a fix.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

Since i updated a few days ago to firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 the download speed was cut in half! I tested (that's what Netgear should have done!) with speedtest.net with these results: down: 50 Mbps Up: 20 Mbps. After downgrading (sounds ridiculous right?!) i tested (again, something the developers of Netgear should have done!) the results are: 89 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. This is not what i expect from a respected name in the router world and hopefully these comments make them aware they need to step up and inprove their development process. Please note, i am happy with this router in general but would like to stay with the last firmware but now not able to.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

Same boat here.  After update mine to firmware version V1.0.9.12_1.2.23, the Internet speed has come to a crawl.  My Wi-Fi keeps dropping off.  My son 3DS has stop working completely, just can't connect to the Internet at all.  It was able to connect to the router briefly just to get an IP and then dropped off right after.  I am tempted to roll back the firmware, but too concern with the WPA2 hack. Hope that Netgear engineer will come up with a fix soon.  I ditched my Linksys router to go with this Nighthawk R7000 and is very disappointed.  The parental control is suck as well

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

Undtill a newer firmware is released, here is the known fixes/workaround to get the speeds up in this latest v.1.0.9.12xxx  version:

And yes, you should do these steps, even if you have QoS disabled!  😉

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1. Go to QoS Setup (you'll find this option under advanced/setup/QoS Setup/)

Step 2. Put a checkmark in "enable QoS" scroll down and then click on the "Update Now" button in front of the "Automatically update performance optimization database " option.  Wait for it to update.

Step 3. Remove the checkmark(important) on the "enable QoS" again and click on the green "Apply" button at the top of QoS menu.

Step 4. Log-out and do a new speedtest and now (hopefully) enjoy your new faster wifi speed! 😉

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If still not work, you can try and re-setup the wifi on your phones. Meaning, deleting the wifi profiles and re-discover the wifi network and re-enter the wifi password on your phones.

Another user, have also suggested to disable the "acces control" feature, if you have it enabled and still need more speed.

Let us know if it helps!  🙂

Believe it or not, I have tried all those steps before I commented here 😞 and it's still doesn't solve the problem

I think I'm just going to move to dd-wrt, which unfortunately doesn't have the hardware acceleration for NAT'ing

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

It was suggested to me by support to default router to see if it helps. I use the DNS service and quite a few port forwarding options. If I have time in the next few days I'll try it. It's a pain to copy all settings down and to try and remember my DNS password. I'm thinking of going back to a Linksys router the web interface and parental, access controls where so much better. Has anyone tried factory resettting their router?

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

I forgot to include it in my little "quick-fix" guide", but it is ALWAYS a good idea to reset to factory settings, after upgrading to a new firmware version....especially if something does not work after updating, but generaly is always a good idea, in order to be sure the older firmware version does not interfere with the new one. Also, you should never use a saved configuration file from a older firmware version. You need to manually re-enter all the settings in the firmware again. But a tip, instead of spending time writing the settings down in the menus, you can just take a screenshot of the different router settings and copy/paste it into microsoft paint tool and save it as a PNG file for later use.

I have always done it this way, so I guess I have developed a habit of taking it for granted, that everybody else does the same!  😉

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

There is a fix coming. I tested it and for me my speeds were identical from 1.0.9.6 (which for me were the same as 1.0.7.X) to new firmware. They are working on it and hopefully released for everyone soon. Don't ask me to give you firmware please, if support wants to share it they will.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

I spoke too soon it appears after your question I did some more testing and found different results. Using a Windows 10 Dell laptop or Netgear EX6200 (with devices wired into it) via 5 GHz I get full speed. If I switch Dell to 2.4 GHz it is almost prefectly 50% drop in performance. More troubling is using two IOS devices a iPhone 6S and iPad (latest non-Pro) both on 11.1.1 either via 5 or 2.4 are both capped at 45 Mbs. I can reliably reproduce that as well. It is better but still something going on. Not quite as fixed as I thought. Sorry didn't do enough testing before sharing, was excited by results.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

Yeah I don't think they do much testing before releasing these firmwares.

Performance also seems to degrade over time.  I noticed the 2.4 band drops after about a day for me.

If I have to do the testing for them I'd rather use something like dd-wrt because if all else fail you can fix it yourself.

I hope that they will test it more thoroughly this time and release it soon. I'm crawling on the speed and my sons are whining about not being able to connect their 3DS game to the internet.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

Does it make any difference if the 2.4GHz band is set to 20 or 40MHz bandwidth?

Edit: I mean on the beta FW.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

It make a sense. With 20 MHz channel width you will get only 70 Mbit/s speed maximum. With 40 MHz per channel width you will get full speed.

I get about 240 Mbps via 5 GHz and 110-120 via 2.4 GHz or 45 on any IOS device on either band. Don't think channel width is issue. All same devices with 1.0.9.6 get 240 Mbps on both bands. Only change is firmware. With 1.0.9.12 no devices got full speed. Beta at least got 5 GHz working in some circumstances.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

This is BS! How much longer do we have to wait for Netgear to fix their f#@king mistake?!? I paid a lot of cash for this pos and it doesn't work right because of their update. When will the new update come out? Can you give us an ETA? I've got people in my household that need and rely on a fast reliable network, I work out of home. Leaving Linksys for this crap was a big mistake. I think this wait proves they don't know wtf they're doing.

Re: nighthawk R7000 firmware V1.0.9.12_1.2.23 update wifi problems

Just in case anyone is wondering I went into Advanced - Administration - Backup Settings - Revert to factory default settings - Erase and did that. After reset I reconfigured LAN IP, DHCP Scope, SSID and WPA2 PSK for both bands. I have very few settings changed from defaults. Same results.

Wired - 240 Mbps
Wireless 5 GHz - Dell Win10 - 240 Mbps

Wireless 2.4 Ghz - Dell Win10 - 110 Mbps

IOS devices on either band - 40 Mbps

For those having issues with 1.0.9.12 go back to 1.0.9.6 whatever fixes are in .12 aren't worth the hassles. I would be except most of my devices are on 5 GHz or wired so not an issue with current beta.

There are issues with EVERY firmware update. I am looking at other vendors for internal connecivity. Then put a DD-WRT build with VPN on the netgear.
