Hi,
I'm thinking about buying a RN21400-100NES, but I've got limited space in my TV cabinet so due to limited height of the TV cabinet interior the RN21400-100NES would have to be placed horizontally on its side. Is this possible? Would placing the RN21400-100NES on its side cause any problem with the disks, or even with heat? Is there any prefered side to lay it on, due to internal fan placement for example?
Thanks,
Ricardo

Hello RicardoSantos,
Placing the chassis on its side is not the standard position so it is not recommended. The drives being sideways will likely rotate more aggressively than their intended position.

Great, many thanks JennC! I'll need to find another place to store my ReadyNAS then.

Some ReadyNAS have the disks organized vertically (Pro-6), others are horizontal (RN628x). So it won't matter to the drives.
That said, there could other reasons to leave the chassis iin the intended position.

Re: Can the RN21400-100NES be placed horizontally?
If you do decide to try it on its side, you should attach some stick-on feet or use something else to elevate it off the surface to allow some airflow under it instead of blockig the vents. I'd recommend at least half an inch. A couple strips of high density foam would likely do the job. Also, with the vents oriented that way, it is more likely to ingest dust, pet hair, etc., so make sure you clean it out regularly.
