Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

Hello everyone,

I have finally made my Memeo Backup Premium activate itself. I had been searching this forum for answers, found none. I found a lot of people complaining about Netgear support on this topic.
I will not describe the problem and a solution...

1. The not working setup

What is the problem...
When you start Memeo application (usually starts with you system) you can go to the log file. Right-click you Memeo icon in system tray and choose: "Send Log Files". A new e-mail is created in your e-mail client with two attachments, log and xml file. Open the log file. You will see something like this:
Start Time: 2012-03-28 19:21:24

...

"Valid external drive detected = False" 😞

So... now we will make it work.

2. The working setup

What is different? The laptop and the ReadyNas are now directly connected with an Ethernet cable.
What you need to setup is
a) enable ETH 1 on ReadyNas (in GUI it is called Ethernet 2)
b) assign an IP to that interface (different that the subnet used on ReadyNas ETH 0)
c) configure a static IP on your laptop (from the same subnet as above). No gateways or DNS needed here.
d) make sure that you can access ReadyNas web page
e) shut down Memeo Backup Premium
f) Connect you laptop to your WiFi network (this is the usual way I use at home)
g) you should be able to access internet now, test it
h) turn off laptop firewall
i) start Memeo Backup Premium

Lets have a look at the log now...

Software is registered 🙂

We are done!

Conclusions:
1) why some packets are blocked when using the first (not working setup)? I have checked my router logs, but I did not find any information. LAN 1 and LAN 2 should work like a switch, but apparently they don't
2) you will need to connect you laptop directly to ReadyNas, and to your wireless router. The second connection is used to access internet, to be able to register your product.
3) The above may be a problem on PCs with only one Ethernet interface. I assume that getting a simple Ethernet switch (no filters/firewall) should help. I do not have any to check.

Have fun!

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

I have the 4200 Ultra connected connected to my PC by a switch and I still had issues. So after looking at what you did, I tried connecting the NAS to my network using Eth1 rather than Eth0 and restarted the Memeo software. It detected that NAS right away and setup the license. I then installed it on my laptop (which had failed before) which is connected to the LAN via Wifi and after setting up an account and restarting the software a couple of times I got that licensed as well.

tl;dr You have to connect that NAS to your network with eth1 rather than eth0 to get Memeo to register.

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

That is interesting. I have not seen any service running only on ETH 1 of ReadyNas, or any information in the manual that these two interfaces are not equivalent, or any iptables entries...That is why I was looking for connectivity problems between ReadyNas and the PC/Laptop.

If this works when you connect you ReadyNas on ETH 1, then great. It will be much simpler. I'll have to give it a try.

Here's the million dollar question... WHERE DID YOU GET THE MEMEO SOFTWARE? Nobody at Netgear knows and it didn't come with the NAS (unopened retail- even had 2 of them and neither had it).

I got a CD of Memeo with my RNU2+. I'm sure I could send you an ISO of the CD, if I can find it. Nudge me again in a few days if I haven't got back to you.

I tried it, didn't like it, and hit an issue IIRC, so I uninstalled the app then and there.

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

I also used Memeo from Netgear CD which I got with mu RNDU2000. Memeo did an automatic upgrade, so it was not the same version as the one provided on CD.

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

Yeah they never bothered to include the CD on the Duo V2's. No Netgear staff here or at the helpdesk could even help with that. Even the units the helpdesk staff had didn't come with the software CD lol
I tried Memeo at first but didn't get anywhere. I'm good with Time Machine or other apps I guess.

Thanks for the offer InTheShires.

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

Hello confused (and in some cases annoyed) ReadyNAS users.
Memeo premium backup is on the CD for the ReadyNAS Ultra owners, just click on the menu item 'backup software' & it'll start the installation. I gather there isn't much difference between the CDs for the Ultras & Duo so I expect it'sthe same. It does come with the DuoV2 according to the product spec.

As for getting it to register after nearly 3 days of reading & searching through the manuals & online help, I finally came across dibs post(Thanks dib). This pointed me in the right direction. Ended up finding how to get it autoregister in the Memeo help.
PS. I think Memeo will need to loaded from the Netgear supplied CD, if Memeo updates after that it shouldn't matter (registered for me after updating)
PSS. It would have been nice if Netgear said to look in the Memeo help about registering. I was lookin for a supplied product key.

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

Hey guys,
Was looking for help on how to activate Memeo (thanks dib!), and noticed some folks can't find the software to begin with.
Though the included CD doesn't always come with the software depending on the model purchased, the Documentation link does indeed take you to a website that has a download link for the software, just click on the Memeo logo image.

Memeo download link: http://www.readynas.com/download/backup/MemeoPremiumBackup1_Setup.exe

You can also find info in the Frequently Asked Questions area: http://www.readynas.com/?cat=50

Enjoy 🙂

BTW, couldn't get my Duo v2 to register memeo, went with different software. (Couldn't use this method. Duo only has 1 ethernet  )

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

I think I have sucessfully setup the memeo account but do I only get 1GB of data for storage? I thought that it was a lifetime license of the premium service.

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

If you don't see a notification at the bottom of Memo counting down how many days you have left, you've indeed successfully setup and activated your program.
I never did find out how much online storage you're allotted for Premium Backup, as mine didn't activate successfully, and I can't seem to find out ANYWHERE on their website... I'd definitely shoot an e-mail to Memeo about it, but if they don't advertise it on their website as a certain size, they aren't liable to give you a certain size...
www.memeo.com is their website, Support@memeo.com.

I checked their Support database, and there's something that speaks vaguely about a change regarding the unlimited online storage plan, and mentions you can "Purchase Additional Online Storage".

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

Spent huge amount of time trying to follow dibs recommended steps without success!

Raised a Tech call with Netgear and was surprised when they suggested / pointed me to this same forum link to try out (after I had already spent a few hours trying dibs setup).
As it was Netgear 2nd line support I thought I must be doing something wrong. So I again tried to auto activate the software (spent another 2 days emails back and forth with Netgear) changing my firewall/router settings/IP settings without any luck.

I'm no newbie when it comes to Computer Networks. I was also lucky to have a 02 wireless dongle (3G) and a wireless network adapter. So I had three connections going at the same time. One direct to the Netgear Ultra 6 plus(hard wired) and two wireless connection to the Internet(one using the 02 3G network and the other a netgear WG111 wireless network adapter to my router) - still no luck. In the end I raised a call with Memeo and had to prove to them I'd purchased the NAS and was the rightful owner of the hardware and they emailed me back a product key.

Shame I had to spend all that time !
In hindsight, I should have gone direct to Memeo  Only took two emails to get a product key emailed back, whereas several emails(2 days) back and forth with Netgear 2nd level support.

....by the way I have 1GB of online data storage using the Memeo Premium software. Not much  but better than nothing 🙂

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

It took a restart of Memeo to find the NAS after initially showing the same behavior plus saying the trial period expired even though it was the first installation. Thanks again to LordRhythm for letting me know the software was posted and to others who offered to post it.

Re: Memeo backup premium. Automatic activation - how to

I have just managed to get my ReadyNAS Duo V2 working through the network switch.

I had turned off UPnP as it is not enabled on the router and it was not needed in my setup.

Unfortunatley this meant that the memeo software would not autoactivate. The log file showed that the device was being detected but seemed to struggle getting identification.

Enabling UPnP and then restarting Memeo seemed to solve my problems.

Thanks for your help on here.
