NV+ Problem video link included of lights

Customer of mine has this NAS and has been working fine for some time. Hes just come back from holiday, and its now offline.

Any idea whats going on? The closest I can get from the LED document is "volume expansion ongoing" except the three green drive leds are lit and oddly, the first one seems brighter than the next two. (there are three drives in this unit)

Hi @Beyondhelp00

Welcome to the Community!

Have you tried checking the NAS Status using RAIDar? Please see Downloads for previous ReadyNAS devices.

There might be failing drives or full OS partition. Was there any recent updates made? You can try to reboot and see if it will proceed normally.

Worst is that it might need a Factory reset, does your client have a backup of their Data?

You may want to make sure that it is a V1 or V2 NV+ you can visit this link to verify.

Regards

Re: NV+ Problem video link included of lights

I've now picked up the unit from my customer. I'm going to look into it. Its been a long time since it was installed, am I safe to pull a drive out one at a time (there are three) and see if it then behaves ok?

Re: NV+ Problem video link included of lights

Just to add this is a three drive array, using X-Raid. There is no other backup.

Re: NV+ Problem video link included of lights

Ok so I found a thread saying its safe to remove all the drives and power on. Drives are now numbered.

I've used RAIDar and it found it on the network.

The screen shows Booting...

ERR: No disks

I've found another post that says test the drives in a windows machine using (in this case) western digitals diag software...

Re: NV+ Problem video link included of lights

For reference this is the screen shot of RAIDar. Clicking on the "Admin Page" button opens a browser to the correct IP but get "unable to connect"

I can ping that IP with and I do get a response.

Re: NV+ Problem video link included of lights

I have got a screen shot of the unit now powered up showing three drives. on RAIDar. Its booting showing "Quota chk"

I'll let this finish.

Re: NV+ Problem video link included of lights

Ok so that completed and passed. What is strange is it then disappeared from my network, although it is set for a static ip on a different subnet, but RAIDar could still see it. It appears to be 'up' from the lights on the front, it identified the drives ok (so it seems) and passed the quota check.

Now its stat there with the activity light flashing, and the blue light pulsing. I think its resyncing?

I'm going to leave it to continue, and see what happens. Although RAIDar cannot see it, I can ping it and do get a response. I'm going to grab another router and set it up so that I can play around without messing anything else up. (but that wont be today)

Re: NV+ Problem video link included of lights

Hi @Beyondhelp00

Do you have a spare drive you can use to boot with the NAS? RAIDar should be able to provide the status of the NAS with the disks in, We have to make sure it is not initializing since your customer does not have any backup. Though this will only happen if you have inserted the drives incorrectly or not in it's original bay.

Using a spare drive will help us determine if there's an issue with the current configuration, the NAS will be performing a clean install on the spare drive.

If you are sure already it's a v1, doing a USB boot recovery might help.

This is normal behavior with no disks installed.  The operating system and ReadyNAS application are installed on the disks, and there is no web interface built into the boot loader that runs out of flash memory.

This is also normal behavior.  RAIDar uses broadcast packets to communicate with the NAS, which works even when the NAS is set up to use an incompatible IP address.  Browsing to the NAS (either with a browser or Windows File Explorer) will fail though.

It disappeared during the quota check?  I am suspecting a failed drive, though there are other possibilities.  Did you test the disks with lifeguard?

The initial video shows a v1 (silver chassis).

I would do this before attempting USB recovery.  There's no evidence that the NAS flash memory is corrupted, as it is booting from flash, and then failing later on - the quota check is being done after the NAS has booted from the disks.

Re: NV+ Problem video link included of lights

Update, feeling more confident after yesterday, and with front display showing familiar information, I managed to configure my network to allow me to see its control panel. I've now enabled DHCP and its picked up a normal addres from my main network.

So I can see it and I can see the three drives, it actually reports as healty, however drive 3 is showing errors (its a few years older than the other two drives).

Now I can connect to the admin panel RAIDar sees everything but oddly I cannot access it via windows explorer using its ip address.

Any ideas? I'm literally just typing its ip which in this case is \\192.168.2.56
