Like 6.0.5, they have failed to post an announcement or release notes. GPL is also missing. I had requested the GPL over a week ago to opensource@netgear.com, and received zero response...

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

I have updated Ultra 2 to "3.0.74.RNx86_64.2.1 #1 SMP Wed May 15 00:37:43 PDT 2013 x86_64", but I did not notice any differences.
The change log for kernel 3.0.74 is @ https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/ChangeLog-3.0.74

Apparently 3.0.78 is already available @ https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/ChangeLog-3.0.78

Derek, you know I'm pretty anal when it comes to GPL. GPL for 6.0.5 has been up for a while, and 6.0.6 is up now in the area you created some time ago on readynas.com. And of course "apt-get source" will work for individual packages.

It's nothing on you, I know you take care of it internally before releases are published. It's all on ISO9001/ECO release person and the owner of opensource@netgear.com, who fail to upload it to the downloads.netgear.com FTP for public distribution; currently stuck at 6.0.4.

Thank you for putting on it on readynas.com in the meantime, I'll use those links until the official NTGR GPL pages catches up in Q3.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

Hello,
First, I would like to give all my thanks to persons who are making live this community
I have try to upgrade my ultra 2 on OS6 and, even if it was great, I prefered to downgrade it on the old 4.2.23 because of the matter of fan.
(I think that I will look each day to see the evolution 🙂 ).
Unfortunatly, after use usb recovery (as indicated there: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=390155#p390155 ), the rndu was on "Racine corrompue".
Please help me :o\

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

Do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything). You have to do a factory default when upgrading from 4.2.x to 6.0.x and when going the other way.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for this so fast answer and for the welcome
I did an os reinstall as indicated here: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu#ultra_2_ultra_2_plus_pro_2_duo_v2
Is it the factory default you tell about?

EDIT: Sorry! I didn't see the "factory defaut" because of google traduction.
I will try it right now 🙂

RE EDIT: IT SEEM TO BE GOOD.... (test disk for the moment)
Thanks again

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

No. A factory default is a separate option on the boot menu. A factory default wipes all data, settings, everything on the disks and does a clean install of the OS. An OS Re-install re-installs the OS and resets a few settings but leaves data intact.

Due to the different filesystem a factory default is needed. 4.2.x expects the OS partition to use the EXT3 filesystem. Since the 6.0 firmware uses the BTRFS filesystem on the OS partition, after you downgrade the flash to 4.2.x the OS partition fails to mount and 4.2.x concludes that the OS partition is corrupt. A factory default will blow away the partitions and do a fresh install.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

Thanks to AMRivlin and to all who helped making this OS6 available to legacy x86.

I own a readyNAS Ultra 2 based on an Atom D405 which is happily a 64bit cpu 🙂 But currently don't have enough time to try OS6 myself (neither have the necessary disks for a full backup and factory default)
Therefore, I do have some questions for you guys :
The first question is that the Ultra 2 has 2 ethernet ports (without link aggregation under 4.2.23). Would it be possible to enable link aggregation with 'upgrading' to OS6? (i doubt that^^) In other words, is there any hardware requirement before any software implementation of this kind of feature ? And about fail-over ? could that be do-able with the help of readyNAS OS6 ?
My 2nd question is : I currently use mainly 2 add ons on my 4.2.23 which are DDNS and transmission. I believe those 2 features are not included in the bare readyNAS OS6. For bittorrent i guess i'll just have to wait for a solution to install addons without Genie.

But for Dynamic DNS and bonding/fail-over, is there an easy solution to enable one of them in OS6, or any other solution (friendly one if possible because i am a linux noob, although if i can easily follow instructions). I've read that the linux bonding driver came with kernel 2.0 (which means it could have been possible on 4.2.x ??). Anyway I'll let the question to whom posses the knowledge about this.

Again thanks to all the 'fans' of the readyNas who shares solution, improvements, addons, etc...

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

OS6 has Teaming on my default for all models, no more home/business. They also get AD usage. So the $200 box has more features than the older $1000 boxes 😛

Transmission is available. Don't think there is a DynDNS add-on yet.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

Awesome 😮
I tried the interface GUI through a VM thanks to your image of OS6.0.6. Pretty cool 😄 Thanks a lot, chirpa (and also for the fast answer).
Therefore i remind myself that i am using a APC Black-UPS 550GI. I bet it will be recognized by OS6 without a hitch (as it was on all 4.2.x plugged with APC's special cable included).
Nearly all my griefs against Netgear are blown away thanks to the community here. I will have to wait for to obtain bigger hard drives (waiting for WD Red 4TB).

I am really wondering what could be the performance comparison between a legacy 1.8GHz atom dual-core on OS6 compare to the new readyNAS 104 with Armada 370@1.2GHz.
I have seen this post talking about a performance hit on 6.0.6 ( viewtopic.php?f=21&t=70847 ). But my guess is that it's a problem specific to his case : he didn't talk about the performance optimization (like "enable disk write cache" or "Disable full data journaling") and didn't make thorough speed testing.

Did anyone, who tried OS6 on legacy x86, see any noticeable performance difference (whatever plateforme used) ?

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

Hi,

Given all the success reports from end users trying out OS6 on older hardware why isn't Netgear moving to support this as an official upgrade (on appropriately compatible hardware - Pro 6 etc)?

Regards,
Ian.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

I went back to 4.23

On OS6 I liked

AD support and teaming

I did not like:

No WOL support.
APC UPS using the APC management card does not work beyond the first time ( you have to reacquaint the the UPS after every reboot)
Slow write speed on the ultra 4 with xraid2 and 4 3Tb Hitachi deskstars was 40Mb with OS6 and 70Mb with OS4.
Unable to keep it from calling home.

For my needs (currently an automated backup) it did not work out, maybe later.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

In a previous post, I described how to fix fan and temperature issues on legacy x86 systems running OS 6.0, until built-in support is there. I think it will be easier for community to have fancontrol file examples for all models in a dedicated topic.

So I'd created today a new topic to share /etc/fancontrol files http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=71155&p=395317#p395317

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

For whom was wondering if OS6 can replace all features/functionality they were using on readynas x86 on 4.2.x ; have a look on the review of readyNAS 104 by SmallNetBuilder (They will review the OS6 in more details soon) :
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas- ... ed?start=1

Updated 5/23/2013
NETGEAR asked me to point out that setup isn't the only cloud-enabled feature that OS 6 brings to ReadyNAS. You get portal-based (no fiddling with dynamic DNS or router port forwarding) file access and management, a Dropbox-like service (ReadyDROP), Remote support for Time Machine backups, remote play for media files and other features that will be explored in the OS 6 review to follow.

I am definitively waiting for their review as the official Netgear communication is too simple or too marketing for my taste.

PS: sorry glem, when WD to release new Red 4TB, i'll be able to post /etc/fancontrol of my Ultra2. What I can say now is that the fans (in 4.2.x) were most often around 800 rpm for ambiant temperature from 5°C to 25°C (yes 05°C nearly a fridge temp during winter). When temp rised to 38°C the fans went up to 1200rpm range. I am not actively watching at fan speed on the GUI, but sometimes I have seen them too fast considering the temperature (like 1100rpm at 23°C), and a calibration (which wasn't really needed) put the fans back to 800rpm.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

Seeing how well they QA the firmware releases, I have worries on the security of the 'portal' itself. That gets hacked, ALL ReadyNAS using cloud features are now zombies... Dare you ask for how they maintain those services? And why is ReadyCloud running all the time, even if you have not opted-in, your OS6 NAS has a connection open to readycloud.netgear.com in the background.

UPnP takes care of port forwarding. Dropbox-like service.. I'll take Dropbox itself, it works. Remote Time Machine is something Apple has had long before ReadyNAS, my Time Capsule backup works anywhere I have Internet access, backing up to my home network. Plex does the remote play stuff on other platforms already.

They have lost their sense of direction...

It would be grate if some one could create a wikipage where the latest tips were posted. Following a long thread to find answers is not always the best.
update:
I started one just now on http://www.wikihost.org/w/opennetgear/start (use adblock to remove ads) Everyone seam to be able to edit the page if they have the address. So go ahead if you think it is a good idea.
