Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
I have been a ReadyNAS user since 2005. I'm currently on ReadyNAS Pro Business (6-disk NAS released in 2008). Starting in June of 2012, I started experiencing issues with the NAS becoming unresponsive. Had a couple tickets open with Negtear. The first one was closed without resolution. The second one was open for months and ended up in having my ReadyNAS replaced under RMA. The replacement box has been doing the same exact thing as the original one - becoming unresponsive about every 3 weeks. Services running on the ReadNAS are no longer available. I cannot ping the NAS, and the front button on the NAS (next to the LED screen) stops responding to pushes. A hard reboot fixes the problem until it recurs about 3 weeks later.
I'm using this NAS not only as a file storage and Squeezebox server, but also for my VoIP ESXi lab. The ReadNAS is the iSCSI target for a bunch of VMs. When the NAS becomes unresponsive, iSCSI stops functioning as well. The ESXi reports that the iSCSI target latency becomes too high when this happens.
So, I've completely given up on the ReadyNAS support. By the way, my NAS is still under warranty for a few more months. I've been looking to buy another NAS. Right now, I can't decide between QNAP TS 469 Pro and Synology TS-412+. Both support VAAI for iSCSI, which ReadyNAS does not support (still).
Today, I accidentally ran into this thread and saw that it's possible to install OS6 on the ReadyNAS Pro Business. By the way, how do I know if mine is version 1 or version 2?
The main question is if iSCSI support is solid under OS6 and if it supports VAAI. Before I ditch my ReadyNAS Pro Business, I would want to give it another chance! Also, I really like the build quality and the hardware. It's just too bad that the Jedi have left and Netgear has killed the ReadyNAS line.
Also, has anyone tried to install Synology DSM 4.2 on a ReadyNAS (x86 versions)? It seems that if you guys are porting OS6 to the legacy ReadyNAS, wouldn't it make much more sense to install decent firmware such as Synology? I've read that the DSM has been installed on the QNAP, which supposedly has better hardware than the Synology NASes. I believe everyone still compliments ReadyNAS hardware quality.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
You have a v1. The v2 stuff is the 'Gen2' running OS6 from factory. Seeing as their other models don't support VAAI right now, and no one from NTGR can be bothered to comment, I'd have to guess the same on this OS6 line.
One guy has installed Synology DSM on the ReadyNAS. It is more a pain to install, having to edit grub menu.lst for serial/mac address. So not a generic install like this.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Chirpa, since everyone here is so upset with the latest decision by Netgear to drop software development for the legacy ReadyNAS systems, and people want more features on their legacy ReadyNAS, why even bother with OS6? Netgear jettisoned tens of thousands of users of fully capable NAS devices, so wouldn't this be the right time for the ReadyNAS community to wave a final goodbye to Netgear and outfit our devices with much better software - DSM 4.2? I bet if the community were to decide on this option, it wouldn't take long before DSM installation were streamlined on the x86 ReadyNAS platform.

Anyone know how to fix the screensaver for the LCD on a pro 6? Mine displays the IP address ok but it never dims. Anyone got a magic fix?

Is a resync still in progress on your Pro 6? The LCD will not turn off while a resync is in progress.

The sync finished a couple of days ago but the LCD has been on all the time. I have done a couple reboots but it seems the screensaver is not working on my original business Pro 6. It used to work ok on the old 4.2.23.

Does this shut off the LCD screen?
# echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/rn_lcd/rn_lcd0/lcd_backlightThat is from 4.2, they may have changed the /proc path in 6.0.

Yeah that works fine. Thanks.
Any ideas how I can correct the /proc path?

No need to correct it, just wasn't sure if it would still work on 6.0, but it does.
All I can suggest for now is running that line in a boot script.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
mdgm pointed out something that may help.. Can you check bios_ver.log in your System Logs? If you don't have a 2.0 BIOS revision (but the older 1.6), that could be part of the culprit for your LCD screen woes.
I made a BIOS Update add-on a few years ago, but it won't work on OS6. Maybe someone else can update it for OS6. viewtopic.php?p=387035#p387035

You can install flashrom via apt-get and extract the contents of the add-on and install the ROM manually but you would need to make sure to choose the correct ROM. Checking the existing BIOS version should confirm which ROM to need to use, but if you are still in doubt ask here.

Thanks chaps.
I have business pro 6. The current firmware is indeed 1.6. I have extracted the roms and loaded flashrom but just want to check RN_NV6_072610.ROM is the correct rom.
If I get the wrong file am I right in thinking it will brick it?

OS6 --Plex--dropbox discussion
So i have been testing this new OS on my ultra 2 for a week now, and its working great except a few caveats:
*First it is not possible point shares to directories on the NAS, so no shares within shares or root shares possible. So if you want to be able to move files quick between shares you are stuck with one share, destroying the entire concept.
*The snapshot feature seem great at a glance but since you are stuck with one share and there is no way to limit the amount of space snapshots are allowed to use constant moving, deleting and changing of files will eventually eat up all your available storage space. And if you are using/changing large files this will happen sooner than later.
*The antivirus feature are tempting, but a simple test moving large quantity of files locks up the NAS pretty bad, so the performance impact is reducing this feature to unusable.
*the plex server is offered from start but is severely outdated so it wont work with the remote players (plex for windows 8 for example)
*Hard drive maintenance is not possible to schedule anymore, you have to manually press a button.
*The feature to back up a share to Dropbox seems great, but it can not be scheduled making it less useful, and Dropbox offer very limited space for free, compared to for example Gdrive, Skydrive or Box. Edit: Also can only be applied to a share, not a folder in a share. So if you only got one share that will most likely not fit.
*Backup jobs can be directed to specific folders within shares but the option is not presented to you easily, you will have to manually insert the path by editing the job after it has been created, the browsing option is not working (take care to sett it properly before making a sync job, deleted an entire 2tb disk by accident because of this).
*External usb discs sets root folder privileges every time they are connected, so if the device starts or you disconnect them you will have to change the folder privileges manually through ssh. If you for instance want a app to be able to write to them. Changes trough admin pages does not work.
*And lastly there is still no auto block list feature with connection log, something that has never been there and been sorely missed. So i guess the password boots have a good time with my NAS, and got all time they need to spam every possible password combination to get in to it.
If any of these complains is wrong or have solutions feel free to respond, i am not possessing great skills in the linux/nas department so it is possible some of these are user errors, but then again if that is true then the OS can be said to be lacking in usability.

It would be nice if the 'admin' user could access a whole volume over CIFS for doing this like they could on 4.2.x

The setting for handling this is set by NetGear, I think.

If you have anti-virus software running on your PC that should be enough unless you download files direct to the NAS from untrustworthy sources and access those files from your PCs.

This should be updated in a future firmware update. For now you can update it via SSH.

Yes. Hopefully they will add the option to schedule some of these tasks in the future.

Yes you need to set the path correctly. No important data should be entrusted to a single device. If unsure as to what paths you should use experiment with test shares and/or ask for help here.

It should be possible to edit the config via SSH. I haven't experimented with this though. A sqlite3 database might need editing too for the change to stick and survive a reboot.

Since i am lacking in ssh genuineness what are the exact command? That would really be helpful.

Yes i noticed through trial and error, with the error part pronounced. Took me a few days of scanning the drive to find appropriate recovery software that was able to recover my ext3 partition and lost files.
