OS6 --Fan fix

@spiderman Its fixed already in 6.1.7 RC 5 both in the web page and the control. Works great.

OS6 --Fan fix

I turned off the fan service and restarted. Fans seem to be working as expected. I had already noticed that OLEDS dim-out a few minutes after boot-up. Great!

Now it might be nice to have an app that let's us manage our nas if not a web interface that re-scales properly when viewing in an iPhone.

My hats off to the developers who seem to be supporting our legacy hardware!!!! This no doubt means a lot to everyone on the forum who have legacy x86 boxes in addition to rekindling our trust as customers of Netgear products. At least, this is how I feel now in light of the recent releases.

I brought that up in the beta of OS6 and it seemed they really didn't get what the problem was. All they had to do was try it on the device and should have immediately seem the issue.

Hats off to the devs as well! Great to see some positive movement towards the customer base.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy

Thanks everyone for posting experiences in this thread!

So for a Ultra 4 the issues with os6 are:

1. Fan control needs a "hack"?
2. LED always on?

Anything else I need to think of? Since I'm about to do a factory reset soon I'm thinking about going to OS6 at the same time. I only use my Readynas to store music and video and stream it to clients at home. I use some extensions as well but nothing critical.

I have an Ultra 4 and for me the fan started to work directly.
Also I have no issues with the LED.

Good news! Any other issues with os6 that you're aware of on a Ultra 4?

Well, performance issues with BTRFS in some cases, which is kind of a biggie.

What about that Fan speed control hack?

Xophile wrote:

From what I know, number 2 above is specific to the 6 drive x86 legacy ReadyNAS's (Pro 6, etc.). I have an Ultra 4 as well, and the front panel display has worked properly with OS6 since day one. I haven't tried the latest beta, but your item 1 above still seems to be true with the latest stable release.

So for those of you on this thread that seem to have access to inside information, what about that Fan speed control hack? Any future plans to have that built into an upcoming release? Just curious. . .

quick question: are Netgear going to make OS6 an official upgrade for legacy boxes or will it only be an unofficial upgrade?

They've always stated its unofficial and not supported. All the work so far to run OS6 on the legacy boxes has been community driven, with Skywalker giving us extra support.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy

Just want to say, that I have not kept up with this thread for a long time, but now I see that there is very easy (other than reformatting data) way to upgrade to os 6, KUDO's! to all involved.

Question, not clearly explained on first posts;

part 1) the modified image is only required for conversion from 4.x to os 6?

part 2) once upgraded to os6 via modified image, is it always required to use a new modified image to upgrade to latest os6, or can standard (non-modified images) os 6 upgrades be applied over existing modified os6 install?

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy

1) Yes
2) You have to use standard OS6 images after you've done the upgrade to OS6 for future updates. The modified image fools 4.2.x into thinking the OS6 image is a 4.2.x image.

You would only need to install a modified image again if you wish to go back to 4.2.x (I have another thread on that now linked to in an early post in this thread) in which case you would be fooling OS6 into thinking a 4.2.x image is an OS6 one.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy

All,

I have followed this thread for a while and am glad to see that the legacy NAS boxes are getting some (unofficial) love. Many thanks for this. I feel like taking the plunge in to OS6 but I have a few questions.

Is extra RAM needed to run OS6 comfortably on a ReadyNas Pro Business?
If so how much and which RAM is compatible.

BTRFS issues, how "bad" are they on legacy hardware?

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy

Been running BTRFS now for some time on my Pro 6 and so far there are no "bad" issues that I am aware of. I have 7.4TB of data with 5GB+ transfers most days.

Xophile wrote:

I've got two Pro 6's and one Ultra 4, all running OS6.

Pro 6 #1 averages roughly 50GB's per day (Role - Windows Server Backups)
Pro 6 #2 averages roughly 10GB's per day (Role - User Shares and Long term Data Archival)
Ultra 4 (Role - Video Surveillance NVR - daily throughput unknown) Receives six H.264 720p Video Streams 24/7/365 at 15 frames per second

I ran into some minor BTRFS issues on the Ultra 4 when it was running a very early OS6 build, but being the ReadyNAS Genius that he is, mdgm helped me overcome them with a few short scripts at the command line. These minor BTRFS issues could have likely been avoided had I disabled Snapshotting from day one. . .

There are still problems with small-block writes to large files, such as encrypted containers, VMs stored on iSCSI or the like.

After reading every post in this thread is seems that my ultra 4 is ready for os6 with no real concerns.

I'm about to do a factory reset anyway...

Thanks again for you input!

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy

I have a pro 2 that I use as just a backup to my Pro 6 and decided to give 6.1.6 a try on the Pro 2. The install appears to have gone fine so thanks to everyone's work on that and the easy to follow instructions. The issue I'm running into appears to be one a few people have seen.

Every 5 minutes I receive an alert stating:

"V5_0 voltage in enclosure 'internal' is out of spec. (4,74V)."

I did have a USB external drive attached and have unplugged that and done a power off/reboot, but I am seeing the same alert.

I have searched the board, but didn't find that anyone had come up with a resolution so far for that error. The other strange thing is that although the system overview shows Model: ReadyNAS Pro 2, when I click on the Volumes it shows a 4 slot RN314 instead of a 2 slot device. I'm not sure if that is related to the issue or not, but found it odd. The volume is currently empty so I'm willing to try a few things to get it working or if one of the guru's would like access I can try to set that up so someone can connect.

I did check the bootlog and it shows:

labelvol0: NC
minvol0: 0.00
maxvol0: 0.00
labelvol1: V5_0
minvol1: 4.65
maxvol1: 5.35
labelvol2: NC
minvol2: 0.00
maxvol2: 0.00
labelvol3: NC
minvol3: 0.00
maxvol3: 0.00
labelvol4: V3_3
minvol4: 3.07
maxvol4: 3.53

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy

I am receiving the following email alert every time I boot the has:

Sun Mar 30 2014 9:54:15
Volume: Volume 'data' usage exceeds 70 % of size (4.5 TB).

I have 3.2 TBs used and 1.4 TBs free. I don't see any problems with volume space.

Might be a bug?

It might be overly conservative, but It is working as designed. 3.2/4.5 = 71% used.

OS6--Volume vs Performance

Like any PC when the volume gets very full, performance may suffer. So it is prudent when the volume gets full to consider deleting some files or upgrading to higher capacity disks. As Stephen said 70% might be conservative, particularly on the x86 units but better to warn early before there is a problem.

Of course it is advisable to maintain regular backups of important data.

Re: OS6 now works on x86 Legacy

Hi all,

I have just tested OS6 on my Pro6. One of the many issue I an seeing is the SSH not working. I have enabled it, it gives me a port number, but if I try connecting by SSH, putty says "connection refused". Any help?

Thanks

OS6--SSH-Port 22

You need to access your Nas using port 22 via SSH. Do not enable remote access via the support option area in frontview. Make sure that the SSH service has been enabled via the services area.
