RN10400 - Disk 3 no more seen, even when changed ...

Hello all,

i'm using a RN10400 with 4 WD RED 3TB in Xraid configuration with firmware 6.9.3.

Last week, disk 3 became invisible for the nas, so i thought it was dead and got a replacement disk (a WD red 3TB too) ... I inserted the disk and the NAS still cant see it, the LED n°3 remains off and the admin page still tells me that there is no disk 3 ...

Is the port 3 itself dead instead of the disk ?

Before the failure, there was no modification at all, the NAS had the same hardware and software configuration for at least 3 years (except firmware updates when they come), but i was on holiday and the NAS was turned off for a month. The failure appeared immediatly at the boot when i came back.

I tried to reboot the nas with the new disk but it is still no seen ...

Anyone has an idea ?

Datas are saved somewhere else so i can perform factory reset if you think it may help, but i fear it is hardware problem ...

Thanks.

It may be a failing external Power Supply, these are a relatvely inexpensive risk purchase to try

This will be hard to find where i live 😕

But if i understand correctly what you say, external PSU provides electricity for each disk bay separatly ?

This should easy to check with multimeter ...

i check and there are only 4 pins for the PSU connector, so no way it provides electricity separatly for each disk ...

It may not be providing enough power to the NAS to function correctly

Where do you live?

Gabon ... no chance to find this here and no way to use postal services here, they steal everything ....

I suggest testing the new disk in a windows PC using Western Digital's lifeguard program (since sometimes disks are dead on arrival).

If you can't do that, then perhaps power down the NAS and remove the disks (labeling them by slot, so you can put them back later).

Then put the new disk in slot 1, power up the NAS and do a factory install.  If that fails, the disk is likely at fault.

If it succeeds, then power down the NAS, move the disk to slot 3, and power up.  If the NAS fails to boot, then most likely the slot has failed.

Thanks for the asnwer ..

I cant test disks @ home (laptops only) but i ll do this on monday at work ...

Before i do the factory reset with the new disk alone in bay 1, i need to know if the NAS will still recognize the RAID when i plug back my other 3 disks ou will the configuration be lost ?

After you are done with the testing, you'd power down, remove the new disk, and then put the original three back in their original slots.  The NAS will boot and mount the volume.  It will of course be degraded (as it is now).

This works because the ReadyNAS boots from the disks (and all the configuration information is on the disks).

Test has been done ...

Disk 3 to bay 1 alone : OK ...

Disk 3 to bay 3 alone : disk not seen ...

well i guess NAS is dead (i have no use a 3bay NAS) 😕

It is late here, i'll try to check hardware tomorrow to see if something has unplugged or something like that but i'm not really optimistic ...

just in case, test of disk alone in bay 2 and 4 is ok too (one could have thought that only slot 1 would be OK for monodisk config) ...

Re: RN10400 - Disk 3 no more seen, even when changed ...

I finally checked the NAS now, it was easier and faster than what i thought and there's no way something in just 'unplugged' ...

The disks are fixed on a card with all 4 SATA ports that is itself plugged into the motherboard via something that looks like a PCI-E 1x port ... No cable ou connection that could have been unplugged ...

Still, i checked the connexion of the SATA card to the motherboard, but no change, port 3 is still dead ...
