ReadyNAS 104 - SMB Shares randomly disconnect from OS X Yose
Hi
Ever since upgrading to OS X 10.10 all mounted shares from the ready NAS over SMB randomly disconnect making working on the NAS a nightmare. I've since upgraded to OS X 10.10.1 and upgraded yesterday from ReadyNAS 6.2.0 to 6.2.2 but the problem still persists. I am using SMB because of accessing the NAS from both OS X and Windows (actually accessing from Windows is a different issue and I'll raise that as a separate thread soon).
OS X 10.9 and before works fine so there's some issue with OS X 10.10 and SMB.
Looking at System logs from both OS X and the NAS when the shares disconnect all I can find is this:
OS X System Log
NAS System Log
Has anybody got any advice?
EDIT: Updated above OS X System log with three extra entries I found before the lines I posted earlier.

- blacky1TutorAfter some reading I am going to try mounting the NAS shares using the CIFS protocol rather than SMB. I believe this forces OS X to use SMB v1 rather than a newer version.
So:cifs://DNSname/sharename
Rather than:smb://DNSname/sharename
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThere's an SMB Plus add-on for the NAS that also lets you tweak SMB settings.
- blacky1TutorThanks for the info about the SMB Plus app. However I believe the problem lies more with OS X rather than the NAS software so I’m inclined to leave that unchanged.
I’ve since read this Mac OS X hints post for defaulting the network stack to SMB1 by creating ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf populated with:[default]
smb_neg=smb1_only
The test I did on Friday connecting using cifs:// proved more stable. And so far today with this latest change the shares have not yet dropped. - blacky1TutorUpdate:
Well, I've had the shares drop three times today so the above is not a solution to this problem :(12/01/2015 15:54:40.857 KernelEventAgent[71]: tid 54485244 received event(s) VQ_DEAD (32)

- blacky1TutorThanks mdgm.
Sent. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI see you last did a factory reset on 6.0.0. Have you considered backing up your data, doing a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) and restoring your data from backup to see if this makes any difference?
- blacky1TutorThanks for the feedback mdgm.
No I have not considered that option. It sounds a bit drastic and I can't remember ever doing a factory reset before (I did have to RMA the NAS last year so maybe that coincided with the reset?). We do backup to external HDD over USB3 each night so I do have the data backed up, but the NAS is 'live' in our studio and contains all current work so I can't really take it offline (other than evening / weekends).
I'm game to try anything to solve this problem but when you ask have I tried this to see if it makes a difference, it makes me think there's a chance after doing this that the problem will still be present. Could this be the case?
Is a backup, reset & restore straight forward? How long may it take with ~2TB of data using USB3?
Also, yesterday I was thinking this problem could be to do with SMB on OS X but thinking about it now, I notice other network shares from Windows 2011 SBS over SMB don't randomly disconnect, just the NAS.
Thanks - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe factory reset would be one possible step in trying to isolate the cause of the problem.
Can you try e.g. AFP and see if you still get the random disconnect problem (just to try to isolate the cause of the problem)? - blacky1TutorOk. Thanks
I'll try using AFP and report back :)
