ReadyNAS Duo restore
I am in the process of recovering my system after both drives in my ReadyNAS Duo failed at the same time. I have recovered to the point of two new redundant drives, with no data on them, and I have a full C drive backup of the ReadyNAS on a USB drive. However, I can see no way that the ReadyNAS backup software will restore my backup from the USB drive, and the manual does not help. What am I missing?
I do not want to restore by copying via a Windows client if I can help it - the dual transfer would take rather a long time with 700GB on the backup.
There must be a way - any pointers would be much appreciated.

Re: ReadyNAS Duo restore
Hi Chris did you figure this out? Just had 2 failed drives and need to get up and running again!
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: ReadyNAS Duo restore
devs
As far as I am aware, there is no way to do it, which is absolutely bonkers. For more detail of my issues, and how I dealt with it, see this thread:

Good luck. Perhaps if Netgear see the comments they may fix the failings in their backup routines.

Re: ReadyNAS Duo restore
You can restore from backup. You can restore one share at a time.
e.g. USB drive as the source, "media" as the path, media share as the destination etc.
The reason backups to Volume C are not supported is that some users may accidentally backup to it deleting all the data on that volume (when using X-RAID all the data on the NAS).
Now you can use the workaround of sharing the NAS over CIFS and using the backup job to connect as the "admin" user to the C share over CIFS but I don't like that method for restoring from backup.

Re: ReadyNAS Duo restore
Thanks, but I could not find anywhere on the dialogue boxes in Raidiator 4.1.8 that allows a restore, for anything. And I still can’t.
If the feature is indeed missing, then my view is that backup of the complete volume C can form a valuable part of a backup strategy and should be supported in some form. For instance, I use my NAS a) to store key files used by several users and b) to hold the backups for my client computers. Then, to ensure I am protected against the NAS failing or being destroyed, I separately back up the whole ReadyNAS to a 1TB hard drive which I keep in a fireproof safe. Then, if anything happens to both drives in the NAS, as happened both to me and to devs, I still have my data via a restore of the C backup.
So - what is the greater ill? To protect against the inadvertent overwrite, which risk could be protected by nag dialogues, or to make this perfectly sensible backup strategy extremely difficult.

Re: ReadyNAS Duo restore
mdgm - I think I now understand your route to restore. You are talking about setting up a new backup job, but in the reverse direction from usb to NAS, I think, and then repeating for each share In that case, it would have been helpful for Netgear to document that method of restoring in their manual (there is no mention of restoring in the manual), which would have saved me a lot of time.
I don't really understand your second method, but since you don't recommend it anyway that is probably no bad thing!

Re: ReadyNAS Duo restore
Yes a backup job with the source and destination reversed is what is used to do a restore.
