ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
Hi,
I've had this problem for a while. Every time I try to upgrade the firmaware using the GUI, I eventually get a message back saying that the update failed:
Fri Oct 12 17:12:13 WEST 2012 Problem encountered while updating your ReadyNAS device.
These are the ReadyNAS details:
Model: ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID]
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a043]
Memory: 256 MB [2.5-3-3-7]
Other than that, everything else seems to be working fine.
Thanks
MT

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
Hi,
Can you download the file and then upgrade the firmware using the local image. In this way the unit will verify the image file first for errors. if you already tried this, go ahead and do OS-re install first.

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've tried this method before and it hasn't worked. OS re-install sounds a bit of a job. I've got a lot of stuff on there. Is this the only way to fix this problem? Any idea as to why it might be failing to update?

Hi,
The other option is to call Netgear tech support and open a case.

OS Re-install leaves data intact.
atanas if motah33 has had the unit over 90 days a free online case may be preferable.

Thanks for the replies. I've had the ReadyNAS for quite a while now - over 3 years I think. I'll open a case with Netgear and take it from there.

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
I did open a case with Netgear, although they haven't responded for a while. They asked me to do an OS reinstall which I did but I don't think it completed properly. After a long time, I could see a pattern on the leds that were blinking and it looks as if it was saying that there is something up with the flash (I found the meaning of the patterns on this forum). It makes sense because when I tried again to update the firmware, this time downloading the file to my hard drive then uploading it, it said that the flash verification failed. I also found the USB ports aren't working. I bought a qualified UPS for it and it isn't recognised and neither are any USB hard drives (I tried two). So, I don't know if a complete factory reset is going to do anything here or if the hardware has gone south.

Are you able to run the memory test?: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/is_there_a_way_i_can_verify_if_my_memory_is_good

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
Thanks for the reply. Just running it now... If it is the memory would that explain the USB issue too or are they unrelated? I've never used the USB ports until now (with the UPS). Netgear support has got back and asked to do a full factory reset. I would like to try whatever checks I can before doing that. The data has been backed-up including the configuration file.

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
It's possible that bad memory would prevent a firmware update from working. If the memory is fine, then further investigation would be needed. There's a good explanation of the memory test on the Duo here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=26993

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
It's been running for a while now and I noticed the squence with the disk1/disk2 leds went as follows: 10-01-11-00 (I think). Then, the act led came on and the disk1/disk2 leds went off. It's been stuck in this state for a long, long time whereas the other sequences went quite quickly. I don't know if the tests are any differenct with the act led on but it certainly stuck here. If this is signifying a memory problem, then what is the spec of original memory in the Duo so that I can get a replacement?

That just indicates the test is running.

I think it should be both disk LEDs lit when it's finished but I'm not sure. Maybe the result when it's finished would be both LEDs off. Have you tried powering off the NAS and running the test a second time?

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
Trying it again... I think it might have been ok. I realised that that disk leds aren't as bright as the act one. But I will run the test again. I was looking at the logs and I found the following in the system.log file after I boot. I don't know if this is anything to worry about:

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
May have to run the memory test again. This time, it ended up with all 3 leds off for quite a while and so I switched it off. I hit the power button and I had to wait quite a while before it rebooted itself. I'll run the test again to see if it does it again. It does the sequence with disk 1 led being on and then you can see it moving through a pattern.

Looking around hunting for clues, I found this partition.log:

No idea what this is about.

Funny you should say that as I've just inststalled the add-on. I presume I need some sort of terminal program to get access to it?

Re: ReadyNAS Duo won't update with latest firmware
I just want to say that I appreciate all the help, mdgm.
I'm going to have to disappear soon but if you want to give me some things to try, please feel free and I'll run through them and get back the results.
Support want me to do a factory reset but I thought I'd like to investigate some more if we can.

Hmmmm. Looks like update_files is probably 4.1.9.
Please do e.g.
Can you also do
Please do e.g.
# rm /tmp/update_file
Can you also do
# cat /var/log/raidiator_version

Yes, I did try with 4.1.9 too which might explain the update_file. It's been deleted.
