ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
Hello,
I have the ReadyNas NV+ v1. It came with four 750Gig drives. I saw a warning message on the front of the unit that one of my drives was experiencing errors, so I removed drive #1, the unit no longer gave the warning message and it continued to work beautifully. So, I purchased a new 1TB drive from the approved list, powered the unit down, inserted the new drive into the slot for drive #1 and powered it back up. Now, only the lights for drives #1 and #3 are lit and there's no message in the front window of the unit, which is just dark. It's been this way for 24 hours. Now, I try to power the unit down, but no matter how long I push the power button, nothing happens. I try playing music from the unit through my Sonos system, but it says it cannot access the ReadyNas NV+. I tried rebooting by disconnecting the power cord, reinserting and pushing power button, but this just returns the unit to the same state; drives #1 and #3 lit, drives #2 and #4 don't light up, unit won't power down no matter how long I push the power button, Sonos can't access the ReadyNas NV+ and it doesn't show up on my Network. I tried powering down by removing plug, removing drive #1 and powering back up, but I get the same response; drives #1 and #3 lit, drives #2 and #4 don't light up, unit won't power down no matter how long I push the power button, Sonos can't access the ReadyNas NV+ and it doesn't show up on my Network.
Please help.
Thanks,
Rob

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
Hello rsbeck
Can you still get to the files after removing the new disk that you just inserted? Do you have full backup of the data?
When replacing the disk that has gone faulty, it has to be of the same size of the faulty one, unless you are going to expand the volume.
What's the current firmware version of the NAS?

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
Hi JennC,
Thanks for the reply!
No, removing the new disk has no effect. It does not return to its previous state where it was working perfectly. In fact, I also tried removing all of the disks, just to see if I could get it to do something different, but I keep getting the same result. I reboot by unplugging, plugging then powering up by pressing the power button. The green lights on the front of the unit corresponding to drives #1 and #3 light up, even when there are no drives inside. The lower window on the front of the unit stays dark and now, in addition, I hear a grinding sound, which is a new development. And after booting up, no matter how long I press the power button, it will not power down unless I unplug. Cant get to the files. It doesnt show up on the network.
I thought it was okay to go up in size with the new drive, but I just wouldnt get the additional space until I replaced all of the drives with the same increased capacity. Is that wrong? I'm not sure of the current firmware, but it was last updated about two years ago. Can't get into it to see what firmware I'm currently running.
I dont have any back-up of the data. It is full of CD's I have ripped and I stilll have all of the CD's. So, if I lose the data on the NAS, it will be a pain to rip the entire 2,500 CD collection again, but at least I have the data.
Thanks for your help,
Rob

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
That's the code for "Boot loader fails to locate valid RAIDiator image, TFTP or USB OS image recovery required." You need to do a USB OS recovery. For more LED codes, see here: ReadyNAS LED Language.
Now, why that happened concurrent with replacing a drive is another question. Maybe just coincidence, but how likely is that?

How do I do a USB OS recovery?

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
I suggest that if you want to try USB recovery, you should do that with only the new 1 TB disk installed in the NV+ (removing all the old disks, and labeling them by slot). The procedure is here: https://kb.netgear.com/21400/RAIDiator-4-1-USB-Recovery-Tool. That preserves your existing data while you bring the NAS back up.
You might also want to test the new drive with vendor diags in a windows PC (using WD's Lifeguard program or Seagate's Seatools).
Another option is that you can mount the disks in a normal X86 PC running linux (though you do need to connect all the drives to the PC). Most PCs can be booted up on linux "live" disks, leaving the main OS intact. Then you can offload the data. That procedure is here: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
I don't know why you have the error that you have, and good luck sorting it out, but I thought the correct procedure for doing what you wanted would have been to put the new disk (same size or larger) into slot one WITHOUT powering down.

I always recommend hot-insertion, since that gives the NAS a clear indication that a drive is removed and the new one inserted.
But installing a blank disk with the NAS powered down also works.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
Thanks for the reply. I'm going to need more help as I am inexperienced in this stuff. Can you explain this paragraph to me?
"If you are experiencing boot problems and TFTP Boot Recovery and write that image to the USB flash device. To write the image on a Windows PC, you'll need to use Rawrite32. Make sure to click the Eject button after the write is complete. On Macs and Linux systems, you'll need to 'dd' to write the image to the flash device."
I have Mac. I don't know what image to write to the USB Flashdrive or how to write it. I also don't know what dd means.
Thanks for your help!

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
Don't feel bad about not understanding it. It makes no sense. Quite obviously, there is something missing from that and the TFTP Boot Recovery page as well.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
Hmmm, nobody chimed in with the missing text. I never had a need to do a USB recovery on my NV's, so don't know the process. And I don't want to just guess (though I have an idea what's needed). Hopefully @mdgm-ntgr or one of the other mods will pick up on this and fill in the blanks.

Re: ReadyNAS NV+ v1 Replaced Drive, Won't Boot
It probably was not necessary to shut down the chassis to insert the new drive.
The only way I'll know what is going on is for it to be in tech support mode so I can review the system, or a set of logs if the web interface comes up. Otherwise, I would only be speculating, and that is not good to do with your device.
Have you sent us your logs yet?
