ReadyNAS RN316 + Seagate ST3000DM001
I've just got a ReadyNAS RN316 and have upgraded the firmware to 6.1.8. I have some drives; one 4TB WD drive and one 3TB Seagate ST3000DM001. My understanding is that you should start an X-RAID2 with the smaller drive and put the larger one in second which will be used for redundancy.
I first put in my brand new WD drive to test the unit, this worked fine, but after doing more reading about the X-RAID2 setup I want to put the initial system on the 3TB Seagate instead. The Seagate is a used drive, but I removed all the partitions and created a MSDOS partition table (not I've also tried a GPT partition table here). I put the Seagate in, hold down the reset button and select Factory Reset and I'm presented with the error 'ERR: Could not p' on the LCD screen and I cannot access the web interface once it is up and running.
If I put the WD drive back in everything works.
The Seagate is on the hardware compatibility list, is there a deeper problem?

- map71AspirantWhen I created a new partition table it removed all the partitions. I have tested msdos and gpt

You want an unformated disk.map7 wrote: When I created a new partition table it removed all the partitions. I have tested msdos and gpt
Try deleting any existing disk volume from Windows, and then don't create anything. Or use the seatools write zeros diagnostic. - map71AspirantI just tried zeroing the whole drive (it took just over 5hrs) with the command
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdf
I entered the drive into the Netgear ReadyNAS, rebooted, held the reset button in and selected 'Factory Reset' from the boot menu and hit OK.
I'm still getting the same error at this point 'ERR: Could not p' - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe WDC 4 TB drive was removed, so only the ST3000DM001 was installed
What happens if you simply boot up with only the zero'd ST3000DM001 installed? There's no need to select factory reset from the front panel, since that is the only option anyway. - map71AspirantCorrect only the ST3000DM001 was installed.
Should I zero the drive again? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you can, I'd try running seatools on the drive. Then maybe try zeroing again.
You could also try support. - map71AspirantSame thing happened, I zeroed out the drive and put it into the ReadyNAS and without pressing anything on the unit it wanted to do a Factory Reset anyway.
I haven't tried seatools yet, I don't run windows so I would have to put it on my bootable FreeDOS. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhen the firmware on the internal flash is corrupt then you can get errors like the error you got or the NAS may hang while booting or run but with some services missing. This problem is usually only seen when you do a factory default as when you do a firmware update or OS Re-install the NAS can fall back to taking advantage of the copy of the firmware on the internal disks.
- map71AspirantThanks again for fixing my NAS mdgm (the problem being a corrupt root.tlz on the internal flash), I'm still left wondering how this happened and if it happens again is there a way for me to fix it myself?
