USB device name changed after update to 6.4.0 final
after the update from 6.2.5 the names of the external usb drives changed,
so all backup jobs have to be changed.
(RN104 , 4 disks WDC WD20EFRX-68EUZN0, ReadyNASOS-6.4.0)

Re: USB device name changed after update to 6.4.0 final
Hi GH,
I need to gather some information that may help us figure out the problem that you have raised. I have summarized my questions below.
1. Did you eject the external disks before doing the update?
2. If you will eject them now, reboot the unit and then plug them back in. Will you get their old USB names?
I look forward to your response.
Kind regards,
BrianL

Re: USB device name changed after update to 6.4.0 final
Here's the same problem:
After installing 6.4.0
USB_HDD_2 -> USB_HDD_5
USB_HDD_3 -> USB_HDD_6
All Backup jobs have been changend.
The server massage after the backup-job lloks like this:
Sicherungsauftrag Backup-1-Daten erfolgreich abgeschlossen.
Very spooky.
First quot is "Backup succesfull"
Last quot ist "Can't get connection"
Netgear the god job is the other one.

Re: USB device name changed after update to 6.4.0 final
Hi BrianL,
I had ejected the external drive and disconnected. Then I did a reboot of the nas before doing the update.
After the update I connected the external disk and it was not detected. Then I did a reboot with the external disk connected and it appears with the new name.
I just ejected it again and disconnect it, then did a reboot. Now it is detected with the new changed name after connection again.
I checked it also with a 2. external disk, same result, the name is changed now.
So it's now not a problem for me because I already changed the backup jobs.
Kind regards,
GH

Re: USB device name changed after update to 6.4.0 final
Hi GH,
I have tested it several times and the names haven't changed. How many external USB hard drives are plugged in the NAS?

Re: USB device name changed after update to 6.4.0 final
Hello BrainL,
I use two external drives for backup, connected is only one at a time for the backup.
Did you do the update from 6.2.5 to 6.4.0 with the drive connected, I did it with removed external drives ?
Kind regards,
GH

Re: USB device name changed after update to 6.4.0 final
Same story here on the RN104. After updating to 6.4.0 the usb drive went from USB_HDD_2 to USB_HDD_3
I changed the backupjobs and still no go. Some editing in rsyncd.conf to fix it, but i noticed that rsync on USB_HDD_3 was disabled. Enabling it, and the lines apear in rsyncd.conf and backups are working.
Remark: My usb drive always stays connected.

Re: USB device name changed after update to 6.4.0 final
You can login using SSH as root to the ReadyNAS, and look at the contents of the file: /etc/frontview/usb/usb_map
It has a the format
<USBname>:<Drive-ID>
If you modify the USBName, disconnect and reconnect the drive (and wait for a few minutes for the NAS to acknowlege the external storage), you will see that the USB drive now has the name of your choice. Your existing backups will then work fine. The name remains constant even if you had to reboot the NAS.
But the drive-ID is not something provided by the drive to the NAS, seems to be something that ReadyNAS allocates to the each new USB drive. So when you do a firmware update, the Drive-ID allocation changes, and you may have to repeat the process above after a firmware update. I wish NetGear would leave the usb_map file alone during updates, a routine update should not require manual changes as root to the NAS drive each time to keep things working.
