Very slow speeds with ReadyNAS NV+ and Windows 7 (avg 34KB/s

So I have gone through the performance guide here: http://www.readynas.com/?p=310 but no matter what settings I change, my transfer rate doesnt really change at all. A steady 34KB/s over a wifi connection. THis is really painfully slow! Now my readynas is purchased back in 2007/2008, so yes its old, but doesnt this performance seem very slow?

Ive upgraded to the latest Raidator, 4.1.10 and the speeds are what im getting by doing a drag/drop of files in windows7.

Anyone heard of this or have ideas? Is this the speed to be expected?

Thanks!

As part of the standard performance tweaks i've changed the MTU on windows7. However in the ReadyNAS control panel, I noticed the MTU is set at 7936 in the Network -> Interfaces tab. Problem is its a grayed out box and I cant change it to 1492 or anything really. Is this supposed to be like this or any ideas on this?

Ok improved speeds up to 51kb/s on avg now by going the opposite way and changing the MTU up to 9000.. I guess ill try to keep upping the MTU

Have you tried updating your wifi card's drivers and the wireless router's firmware? I would assume you've installed all the latest service packs and updates for Win 7 also?

I would start with checking those.

What model router are you using?

You may also want to exchange the network cable between the NAS and the router (preferably with CAT5e or higher).

Any network errors in Frontview?

Re: Very slow speeds with ReadyNAS NV+ and Windows 7 (avg 34

So I went out and just bought a new ethernet cable, no real change with the new cable. So thats not it. I have the latest drivers. The router im using is actually a Motorla Cable Modem/Router that comes with my cable service. The thing is I just moved cities and used to have a different cable provider with a differnt cable modem/router, and I still had the same issue, so I dont think its the router...

The fact that this ready nas has worked so well for me for so many years is a real testament to the quality of this hardware, however this slow speed issue is becoming untenable as my backups get larger and larger (it now takes me about 6 hours to do a backup of my important files) and I really dont want to toss this setup-- but there doesnt seem to be any other choice. Hopefully there are still some ideas floating out there, because Ive tweaked every setting I can think of so far

Thanks for the effort!

That high MTU suggests you have Jumbo Frames enabled. That won't help over wireless.

You should take a look at Wireless Performance Issues with Vista/Windows7 and the ReadyNAS

To be honest, Ive tried both the low 1492 and high MTU and the differences are very little (for whatever reason, MTU set high is a little bit faster), but I never go anywhere above 50kb/s, no matter what I do with the MTU

Maybe try a different router? What speed wireless does your router provide?

This is across two different routers from two different manufacturers and two different cable providers in two different states 🙂

They were both 802.11n as is my NIC (Macbook Pro with bootcamp to windows 7)

What version of Mac OS X do you have on the Mac partition? Have you installed the latest bootcamp drivers? Have you seen if there are any 3rd party drivers for your wireless NIC?

So heres something interesting, on the OSX side of my partition, download speeds are very fast! OSX doesnt give me an actual speed, but a file that takes me about 15 mins on Windows 7 is taking me between 2-3minutes on OSX. This is with either CIFS or AFP, no difference.

I do have the latest bootcamp drivers, and nothing 3rd party installed. The only thing I have installed that could be in the internet path that I could think of is Norton Internet Security... not sure if thats related or not.

Yes, do try disabling (temporarily) anti-virus or firewall software and see if it makes a difference.

Looks like your system was setup on RAIDiator 3.x. Backing up your data and doing a factory default would be worth a try. Since you're running 4.1.10, a factory default would give you a clean setup on this firmware.

Ok will do, does that wipe the data on the device?

Thanks

Yes Factory default will wipe all data.
