When I delete a share it deletes my data as well
READYNAS NV+ v2 with 4 3TB WD Red
RAIDiator 5.3
RAIDar 4.3.4
Setup as Flex Raid JBOD with 4 volumes c,d,e,f
Accessing console (dashboard) with firefox 18
I been copying all my data onto these volumes over the past few days. I noticed the shares which come with the Readynas and mentioned in the RAIDiator 5.3 manual, the shares are called Backup and Media. When you look on the web interface on the shares tab it lists the current shares, so it says "Backup" with "/c/backup" underneath and "Media" with "/c/Media" underneath.
As it says in the manual "you can delete or rename these shares. You can create other shares to organize your data" so I highlighted each one and pushed the "-" button on the console to delete and they were gone. Then the next day they came back!! So I deleted them again. Each time I pushed "-" it confirmed do I want to delete it? and I answered Yes. And they disappeared from the console screen.
Somewhere along the line and after trying to delete them multiple times I noticed the "Media" now said "/e" rather than "/c/Media" I might have tried adding a share to the e volume, or editing the media share that was there I'm not sure.
So this time I once again tried deleting them and they were gone and so was all my data on e volume....2TB worth! (i have a backup on another HD thankfully) which took 10 hours to copy onto there.
Then I restarted the NAS and computer....and the f%^king shares reappeared once again "Backup" with "/c/backup" and "Media" "/e" but there was nothing on the e volume, so trying to delete the share deleted all the data but the share remained!! What sort of a whacky machine is this!! The e volume was completely empty apart from 2 files which were on there from the initial install.
Anyway I couldn't believe what was going on and I thought maybe I had deleted the files somehow by accident (I don’t know how!) so I copied them again. Then when I was trying to work out what was going on with these undeletable shares I was looking at the contents of the e volume and deleted the "media" share with "/e" and watched as all the files were being deleted...then that confirmed it, deleting a share deletes the data along with it.
I thought removing a share like in windows XP or Win7 didn't touch the data, it just allowed you to share it out...if you delete the share it just stops sharing it out...but no...it deletes it on this thing!
I would love to know what is going on here if anyone has some insight? This is the first NAS I've owned and I've only had it 1 week.
Firstly how do I delete this factory install shares once and for all?
Secondly why does deleting a share delete the data as described?
How can I delete a share but not have it delete all the data that is being shared?
Cheers

- EtzAspirantBasically each share is a separate folder in NAS file system, you delete folder, you delete its contents... ;)
Most simple solution would be, creating your own share, name it whatever you like and put data on it, not on shares which you decide to delete afterwards.
For example, if you dont need multiple shares and dont use factory ones, create Share named "public" and put your data in there.
Another option would be connect NAS with admin credentials (same as in frontview) and store your files directly on /c (but I wouldnt really recommend that, as it is not meant to function like that)
Also, if you have multiple family members you have to share out Admin/root password then and its generally a bad idea, so creating "public" share accessible for everyone would be much better.
Another thing which I`m abit uncertain is that they reappear, because I havent had that problem, still I never tried to delete built in Shares also, as I would need recreate those afterwards anyway.
Still noticed one thing, if you delete share via GUI, it will still exist in console (filesystem) for a while (this saved my ass once and I could recover all my files from there, after accidentally deleting wrong share). - StephenBGuru - Experienced Userbucky - did you somehow create Backup and Media folders on more than one volume???
As Etz replied, you are not un-sharing a folder when you remove the share. You are deleting the folder. - a_burger_with_fAspirantyou should be able to delete these shares if they are coming back and on top of that showing up on a diff volume theres something going wrong when you delete it
if its deleting all your data on the device i would just reload the firmware, factory default and see if you are still getting that same issue, if you still have data on other
shares then call tech support - bucky1AspirantThanks for your reply Etz.
“Basically each share is a separate folder in NAS file system, you delete folder, you delete its contents”…..understand…however unintuitive it is! I was nearly going to write why don’t they have it in the manual (RAIDiator 5.3 SW Manual_5Sep12) but on closer inspection they do on page 34. “Removing a share permanently deletes the data within that share.” So that’s good…that part is my malfunction not the NAS unit, that’s just its behaviour. Albeit different to what most people would associate with what a share would mean from XP and Win7 etc.
I’m trying to delete the backup and media shares because I don’t see how I can use them….all the volumes are my backup not just the backup folder, everything on the NAS I have on other disks.
There are 2 shares still listed as shown on dashboard, “/c/backup” and “/e/”
So I clicked on “/c/backup” and deleted it. I refreshed dashboard and it was still gone…good. I closed dashboard and reopened it and it was still gone…great. I restarted the NAS and it came back! Damn!
It’s not really important whether its deleted or not but its not behaving as it should, which may be a sign of a larger problem. i.e. firmware problem or something I don’t know. So I would like to know what is going on here.
So from here I guess questions become
1. If I delete a share and it deletes the data how do I recover that data as you have said in your last sentence? You said it still exists in console, what do you mean?
2. Why do these shares keep coming back?
3. How do I get rid of “/e/” share without deleting everything in the e volume again? - bucky1Aspirant

Hi StephenB.....No, I have 4 volumes and I certainly did not create 4 shares of backup, 1 on each volume....I tried deleting /c/backup right from the start because I didnt need to share that. - bucky1Aspirant

If I reload the firmware from dashboard will I lose any data on my volumes c, d, e, f ?? or will it just reinstall the firmware? - bucky1AspirantI did the OS reinstall..changed nothing...still have these undeletable shares!
So the questions I would still love to know the answer to -
1. If I delete a share and it deletes the data how do I recover that data? Is there a way? (apart from pull the drive out and send it away)
2. When I reboot the NAS, Why do these shares keep coming back after I repeatedly delete them?
3. How do I get rid of “/e/” share without deleting everything in the e volume again? I dont want to share all of volume e out.
4. How would I change the volume name...say from e to g? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAre you accessing the NAS using the admin login? That would explain why you are seeing /e/. If so, the way to hide it is to use a different user log on. If you aren't using admin credentials, the volume name isn't seen when accessing the files - which is why there's no provision to change it. The intended way is for users to access the shares (often by mapping them to drive letters) - in which case the share name is the volume name.
AFAIK there is no easy way to recover data from a deleted share. Certainly there isn't one built into dashboard. Recovering deleted files from linux file systems is not easy - there is a utility called extundelete which claims to do it, though I don't know how well it works or what it takes to install it on an NV+ v2. It would require ssh access.
I am not sure why your deleted shares keep returning - I suggest a support request on that one. - chirpaLuminaryUnfortunately, I don't know how well Flex-RAID was QA'd on the 5.3.x platform. Maybe one/two volumes, but with four volumes and deleting shares, I could see where paths could be corrupted and deleting the wrong shares. Flex-RAID was an after thought for support on the ARM platform, wasn't originally there.

Yeah I am accessing the NAS thru the admin logon on Dashbaord...but it doesn't make sense what you're saying becoz I have 4 volumes and only /e/ share is displayed...why arent they all displayed on the Shares tab on Dashboard if thats true.......somewhere along the line I did something when I was playing around to see how things worked and things got a bit corrupted..thats my theory!
After lots of thinking of what I had done before this started, I think I added a new share, selected volume e but didn't put any name for the share name....which would result in a volume share..thats my theory...but when I tried it again it wouldn't accept a new share without a name so that couldn't be how I did it.
Thats what I thought about data recovery...but I'm not familiar with linux file system...preventition is definitely better than cure
Thanks for your answers StephenB....I'm realising there's no easy answers to my questions!
