Jan 11, 2013wake-on-demand and shutdown on inactivity ?
First question :
Is it possible to use something like wake-on-demand (Apple Bonjour service has that) with the ReadyNAS ?
I use my NAS for my medias file. But each time i want to access a media, i have to manually start my NAS. I would like to put it in advanced sleep mode and wake it only when i need my files. Is it possible ?
Second:
Is there a function to shutdown my NAS (or put it in advanced sleep mode) when it has not been used in the last X hours ? Something like on windows.
Thanks!

- chirpaLuminarySome routers offer a 'wake-on-lan' service to wake PC's when packets are sent their way. That, combined with a script that shuts down NAS after its been in disk spin-down mode for X hours, could somewhat get there.

Some routers offer a 'wake-on-lan' service to wake PC's when packets are sent their way.
I do not want to wake my PC, i want to wake my NAS when i try to access a shared media from a PC. But i'm not even sure if i can put my ReadyNAS into sleep modeThat, combined with a script that shuts down NAS after its been in disk spin-down mode for X hours, could somewhat get there.
Where can i find that ? And would it shut down my nas after X hours of inactivity or just after it has been running for X hours ? I don't want it to shut down in the middle of a movie - chirpaLuminaryPC/NAS interchangeable. The NAS is just a specialized PC. Wake-on-LAN would work for either.
There is no script that I know of at the moment, one would have to be written by someone.
It shouldn't be that hard to do, I may even later it later if I feel up to it. Just need to look at the age of /ramfs/spindown, and if the values are :1 in there. For example, this is my NAS, and the disks have been spun down since 9:30AM:# ls -l /ramfs/spindown
Could shut the system off after say 4 hours of spin-down mode. Then you need something to trigger it to power back on. Either a router that has that option (my ASUS does, NTGR ones don't so far), or run a WOL app from your PC/Phone to wake it. Then it would take ~1 minute or so to boot up before you could access it.
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 44 2013-01-10 09:25 /ramfs/spindown - Retired_Memberi have a $200 netgear router (FVS318N) it probably supports WOL but since i always access my medias from my XBMC HTPC it would probably be easier for me to set it up there.
Now i just don't understand how to enable WOL on my ReadyNAS... Is it possible to open it with WOL when it is totally shut-down (after pressing the power button 3 times to do a "hard" shutdown) or do i need to enable some kind of "sleep mode" like with PC ?
As for the "shutdown after idle time" script, if you are willing to write one i can pay for it ! :) - chirpaLuminaryWell lets start again, what ReadyNAS model do you have? Not all support WOL, recent ones do though. You should see it under FrontView>System>Power> for most, if you have Dashboard (Duo/NV+ v2), it should be under the Power section also.
- Retired_Memberi have 3 ReadyNAS. I want to enable WOL on 2 of them :
ReadyNAS Ultra 4
ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus
Wake-on-lan is already activated in the options. But when i try to start a movie from XBMC that is hosted on the NAS, it doesn't wake up - chirpaLuminaryOkay, those NAS do support WOL.
By router support I mean the router having smarts/brains to send a WOL packet to a system that appears offline. NTGR routers don't offer this, besides using custom firmware like DD-WRT, the FVS won't for sure.
I haven't checked XBMC lately to see if they have that option, to send a WOL packet.

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Ad ... ake_On_Lan - Retired_MemberSo if i install one of those add-ons, Wake-On-Lan will work even if my router doesn't support it ?
Damn i can't believe a $200 router doesn't support WOL :( - chirpaLuminaryWOL is just a special packet. The router could 'support' it if NTGR added it to the router GUI to be able to wake machines.
Looks like one of those add-ons could be installed, then from your TV via XBMC you can wake the NAS without having to go push the button. So half way. Now the other half to shut it down. For now, you could set the Power Timer on the NAS, then test WOL. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe wake up will take some time to take effect - disks need to spin up before media is available. With some players that delay can create a timeout.
I'd love to see Netgear routers support WoL in their gui.
Though I wouldn't want the router to automatically wake a device whenever a packet is sent to it. Some of my PCs can be set to wake up when on any packet directed to them, and the result is that they never stay asleep.
