"Format disk failed" – Unable to format new HDD

I just got a new 8TB drive and tried to add it to my ReadyNAS. Unfortunately, I'm getting the following error:

"There was an error in volumes. Format Disk failed. The disk may be part of an active volume or may contain the last system OS mirror. Format disk failed."

A screenshot is below.

Anyone got any idea why this might be occurring? The disk tests just fine.

Perhaps hook the disk up to your PC and wipe the partition table off it?

Thanks, mdgm-ntgr. Wiped the GUID using diskpart but it'll be a while before I can test it. My 314 is currently resyncing with the old HDD back in.

Was worried I'd hit an expansion limit. Is that an issue with the RN314?

No, you would not be running into an expansion limit. The expansion limits that affected e.g. RAIDiator-x86 4.2.x and RAIDiator-arm 5.3.x do not affect OS6 systems.

Which firmware are you running? There have been improvements in support for high capacity disks over time.

Well, the ReadyNAS finished resyncing and I added the clean HDD to it. But unfortunately I'm still getting the same error.

Can I reboot the NAS while it's still in "degraded" status and try again?

You can reboot the NAS, even though the volume is degraded.

If you use the NAS for primary storage (as opposed to backup) you might want to update your NAS backup.  Or make one if you don't have one.
