I'm taking my first steps with a Big Boy network, hoping to set up 4 VLANs behind OpnSense. However, I seem to be stumbling at the fundamental step of getting the switch working. Words of wisdom - or condolence - would be much appreciated. Model is GS108Ev4, firmware is V1.0.1.9. All cables are known good, and have been rotated with other known good cables. Switch has been factory reset prior to firmware upgrade. Network is laptop (192.168.1.46) - port 6 : GS108E (192.168.1.3) : port 8 - OpnSense (192.168.1.1). Network works as expected when all ports are in access mode, or when the GS108E is swapped out for a GS308. 1) First problem - the trunk shuffle! (little reference for the older folk here). a) Using a basic VLAN, set port 8 ( to the router) to 'Access' : $ ping 192.168.1.1 PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.543 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.688 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.646 ms a) Set port 8 to 'Trunk (uplink)' $ ping 192.168.1.1 PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data. From 192.168.1.46 icmp_seq=17 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.46 icmp_seq=21 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.46 icmp_seq=22 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.46 icmp_seq=23 Destination Host Unreachable As I understand it, a trunk port will pass all tagged and untagged packets without modification. So why is the port blocking all packets? 2) 'Communication Error.' So, then I tried the Advanced VLAN. My steps were : a) Click 'SWITCHING' -> 'VLAN' -> 'Advanced 802.1Q VLAN' -> 'ACTIVATE MODE', and continue past warning. b) Click 'APPLY'. I get a modal 'Advanced 802.1Q VLAN Communication Error.'. Other than a few CSS or JavaScript warnings and errors (all presentational as far as I can tell), there's nothing in the console. How do I resolve this error? It crops up whenever I click the Apply button, regardless of what config changes I've made. 3) Back to Basic 802.1Q VLAN. a) Create new VLAN 'IoT', tag 10. b) Set port 6 (the laptop) to this VLAN. Now I can't even ping the switch! $ ping 192.168.1.3 PING 192.168.1.3 (192.168.1.3) 56(84) bytes of data. From 192.168.1.46 icmp_seq=10 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.46 icmp_seq=11 Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.1.46 icmp_seq=12 Destination Host Unreachable I... what? Hello, According to the User Manual, I should be able to set System Time as well as configure a PoE schedule. I am not seeing that "SYSTEM TIME" section anywhere on my GS308EP, running the latest firmware (2.0.0.5). This User Manual applies to both EP and EPP switches. I've been going back and forth with Netgear support for over a week about this and I'm honestly at a loss. I'm hoping someone here can tell me if I'm crazy or if what they're telling me doesn't make sense, because it really doesn't add up to me. My Setup Switch: Netgear GS110EMX (firmware 1.0.2.8) Port 1: Internet uplink (1G, connected to router — standard fiber ISP) Port 9: Mac Pro via OWC Thunderbolt 4 to 10G Ethernet Adapter Port 10: Asustor AS6508T NAS (10G) Cables: Cat6A throughout This is exactly why I bought this switch — two 10G ports for my computer and NAS, with everything else on the 1G ports. Pretty standard home prosumer setup. The Problem Internet uploads are throttled to about 250-300 Mbps when my computer is on a 10G port. Downloads are fine at 830-880 Mbps. When I move the same computer to a 1G port with the exact same cable, uploads jump to 708 Mbps. That's more than double the speed on a port that's supposedly 10x slower. What I've Tested (at Netgear's request) I ran every test their L3 support team asked for. Here are the results: Internet Speed Tests (computer on 10G port 9): Flow Control Download Upload OFF 865 Mbps 306 Mbps ON (port 9 only) 879 Mbps 169 Mbps ON (both 9 & 10) 820 Mbps 137 Mbps Internet Speed Test — computer on 1G port (same cable, same everything): Download Upload 884 Mbps 708 Mbps iPerf3 between Mac and NAS (local, 10G ↔ 10G): Direction Speed Mac → NAS 3.73 Gbps NAS → Mac 9.40 Gbps Local 10G performance is excellent. The ports, cables, and NIC all work fine. What Netgear Says After all this testing, support came back and told me: This is "working as expected" and "within the design limitations of the switch" The 10G ports are "intended to be used as uplinks" — not for client devices A replacement would behave the same way My configuration is "not the intended use case" Why I'm Confused I don't understand how any of this is "expected behavior." Specifically: How does a 1G port give me faster uploads than a 10G port? If the 1G uplink is the bottleneck, moving to a slower port should give me equal or worse speeds. Not more than double. Nobody has explained this. Why are only uploads affected? Downloads through the 10G port hit 865 Mbps — nearly saturating the 1G uplink. The traffic crosses the same 10G/1G speed boundary in both directions. Why would only one direction have "buffer overflow" problems? Flow Control made things WORSE. They asked me to enable it. It dropped uploads from 306 Mbps to 137 Mbps. How is that a fix? The product page says "No Network Bottlenecks thanks to the 2 10-Gigabit/Multi-Gigabit Uplinks." Now support says those ports are only meant to be uplinks and my setup is unsupported. The user manual literally shows 10G client devices connected to ports 9 and 10 in its network diagrams. This switch used to work. I used the exact same setup with fiber in Chicago for years with no issues. I only noticed the problem after switching to fiber here in LA recently. Something changed. What I'm Asking Has anyone else seen this? Am I wrong to think a managed switch should be able to handle 10G devices sending traffic through a 1G uplink without losing 70% of the uplink's capacity? I've seen a couple other threads about similar issues with the GS110EMX and I'm starting to think this is a known design flaw that Netgear just doesn't want to acknowledge. At this point I just want to know if I should keep fighting for a replacement or just give up and buy a different switch. Any insight would be really appreciated. Howdy All, We have instrumented our first "new to us" Netgear switch for our classroom (to replace like 7 smaller switched that were scattered around) and I got it up and running, but realize that PORT 7 is the "uplink to our comcast router" port and now we're putting a new classroom computer onto that port, so I need to move the uplink line. I tried changing the VLAN to include Port 48 and Port 39 (both free in our schema) and moved the network line, but the switch refused to route traffic. I rebooted the switch (not reset, restart) to see if "coming up on the new line" would work, but no. If I move the line back to port 7 (still in the VLAN) it resumes functionality. I have checked the port configurations in the switch web admin, and they are identical. I have checked the VLAN membership configuration, and all three ports are "U"ntagged, with the same attributes. Hello, I know the concept of vlan and pvid and have the following configuraton. advanced 802.1q vlan 1 - T U U U U U U U vlan 10 - T U E E E E E E vlan 20 - T E U U U U E E vlan30 - T E E E E E U E vlan40 - T E E E E E E U port 1 is the only port in vlan 1 and also trunk port, every vlan traffic through parent switch and gateway is fine. Is vlan1 configured correctly? I googled around, vlan documented well even screenshot included but not a topic mentioned detail about trunk port. My question: Should I tag trunk port? I throught the other vlan alread done tagging packet. port 2 ~ 8 is not in vlan1. what should I do about them? untag or exclude? Thanks for your help.SolvedConnect 2 GS752TXP-300NAS

Hello, Since the past couple of days, I encountered a problem where a number of applications and websites are not working properly. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. For example, on twitch.tv the stream loads, but after 30 seconds the stream buffers and/or the chat randomly disconnects. On League of Legends I can sometimes connect to the lobby, but get dropped the moment the game starts. Or I disconnect from champ select. Sometimes YouTube loads, but takes a while and drops connection halfway through the video. When checking the router and calling the ISP, everything seems okay. Now I've checked the Netgear GS105Ev2 switch and the cable tester shows a Mismatch error on the cable router through to my PC. The other cables don't give errors. I've updated the firmware and rebooted the switch. I've updated Windows and rebooted the router. I've tried 3 different cables, where each one shows a Mismatch at the end of the cable. Routing is as follows: Port 1: ISP Router -> Switch (1000M) Port 2: My PC (Mismatch) (1000M) Port 3: GF's PC (100M) (This should be 1000M so there's also something going wrong here) Port 4: Solar Panels (100M) Port 5: Not used. When comparing the "Easy Smart Managed" product data sheets (across various port quantities), I'm finding it very hard to understand the difference between the 1xx- and 3xx-series units, e.g. GS116EP vs. GS316EP. The specs appear identical -- is one unit a newer model, or do they offer different warranties, or something else that's not obvious apart from the visual appearance? There are elevated price points between the 1xx- and 3xx-series which suggests a delta in spec and/or value proposition. Thank you!Solved
