Jan 25, 2017Almost officially done with Netgear Orbi and their support due to not fixing the wifi issues
I am done waiting not hearing anything back from their engineering team to fix this issue. It's been 3 weeks now with no fix. I pretty much told them, they have till Feb. 10th before I purchase a different Mesh system and ditch this crap Orbi. This is ridiculous its taking this long to fix the issue. I work for a living in IT, and work with large products from EMC, CommVault, and have worked with their Dev teams on issues and they resolve them within days of being found.
I can't keep tolerating the disconnecting of my wifi devices (android) like this any longer and having to reboot the routers when another device just decides it doesn't want to connect any longer.
Hello Everyone
We have release firmware version 1.12.0.18 this firmware has fixes for disconnects and many more I posted the release notes below.

If you are still having issues after updating your Orbi unit you may want to factory reset the Orbi and test again. If you are still having disconnect issues or other issues with this firmware please create a new thread or contact our support team.

- Retired_MemberSo i guess android is too since those devices are having issues. Dude you have no clue what you are talking about.
sigh - just google MBP and issues connecting to none apple routers , its well known over many years that apple devices have had issues connecting to anything other than the routers made by apple , this is just another case if it , maybe the netgear dev's will find a work around ( and yes thats what it will be ) which while making the orbi more compatible with apple products will reduce some performance to achieve it , aka having to force 2.4 gig to 20mhz as we have had to do for years
- Retired_MemberShut up dude. Go somewhere else and whine.
- I'm not Apple bashing, either. The drops are on my overclocked desktop with Edimax 1200mps dongle, Android phone, Samsung TV, etc.
I've downloaded all the Orbi updates & factory reset to the new firmware, changed various settings like QoS, turned on and off satellites, adjusted distances, etc all in search of Netgear's promises. My main problem is lousy cell service at my house, when we moved into a new area 2 years ago. I went to WiFi calling; however, I was on the phone with my mom two days ago and all three of my Orbi WiFi calls dropped! I disconnected and I got the call just fine on cell service. I want to use WiFi calling, so that I can wander around the house taking care of other things (like 4 kids), while on the phone, not figuring out why I have to do so much work to try to get a $500 product to function like it is supposed to do!
My wife was trying to get her grades turned in & write substitute teacher plans, but got fed up with (Orbi). "Why'd you go waste all that money on something to fix the WiFi, with something that's worse than what you already had!?" I don't know. You're right, that's stupid.
I'm sure not going to keep a box of broken pieces for the next few months, while I wait for Netgear to get their act together and send out an updated fix (with new problems?). The same problems I had at the end of November when I took the Orbi back the first time.
I love the concept, but hate the implementation. - Any handoff issues with router and satellites?

There is no difference with the debug firmware. It is just for debugging and for my understanding same as the normal one, but with debigging enabled.
My satelite frequently loses the connection. But it is stating a good connection while starting up (solid blue).
- Retired_MemberNot per the netgear tech. . They did make changes in this firmware he said and supposed to find out what for me.
- Retired_MemberOkay the tech told me wrong. He just sent this.
The firmware is based on V1.4.0.34 and enabled a debug printer which keep tracing and logging wi-fi client status (such as connected, or steered by Orbi). We will just have you monitor the connection for now.- DarrenMSr. NETGEAR Moderator
NETGEAR is aware of an issue affecting some users where wireless client devices frequently disconnect/reconnect from the Orbi WiFi network. We’re actively working on the issue and hope to have a solution soon.
Thank You

I turned of Orbi and turned my Fritzbox on.
In the log there are also some reconnects from the iPhone, but way less as with the Orbi.
The most important thing was, the iPhone was always connected as I turnied it on, so I could use Sonos the whole time without any problems. There is also no issue with loosing the connection in between. The network is exptremly slow in the bedroom, only 5-8 Mbit from a 100 Mbit landline, but Fire TV was also working without any issues..
With Orbi, the iPhone was never in the network and needed sometimes a minute to reconnect (Sonos is not connected as I was in LTE). It is reconnecting also during surfing or watching videos and this is the biggest problem for people without big data plans..
- Retired_MemberWhere do you see the disconnects on iOS at?
- brasaxApprentice
In the router logs. But I also see it while surfing and watching videos or whatelse, becuase it switches to cellular network and needs up to 1 minute to reconnect. The most time if I'm at home and my device is in standby and pick it up, the iPhone is not connected to my wifi. This is not happening with the Fritzbox for example. It just stays connected to the wifi.
But I also send logs from iOS to Apple to investigate the issue too, installed a Wifi-debug profile for it.

Looks like in the logs, nothing actually says reconnected, but I do see my IOS devices and Android ones connecting often many times.
- Retired_MemberInteresting as it does it more often on my android stuff than Apple.
- RustproofcornLuminaryLet us know if they took it back.
- Retired_Member
They took it back. Made an exception. I showed them all the issues the Netgear orbi was having (this forum, my ticket with support), and the manager approved it. Last time I took something I didn't have to talk to a manager, but this time it required it as the normal employee didn't want to do it. Either way, I got the credit, and now own the Eero system running. I already set it up and have no issues at all so far. It's fast everywhere in the house, and all my devices have a solid signal with no drops.
- How is the switching from satellites ? The ampli HD as issues too
- Retired_Member
Haven't noticed any issues. Seems to switch just fine depending which one has the stronger signal. I do notice they aren't as strong as the Orbi, but you get three so that fixes that issue. Speeds are great on all of them as well. I couldn't tell it to use 192.168.1.XXX network, so it had to use 192.168.7.XXX and I had to change a couple of my devices and reboot some others for them to start working again. So far, no drops at all.
