RBR50 / RBS50 / UK / Virgin meda - Satellite drops connection

I have a RBR50 connected to my virgin media router, with a sattelite positioned at the opposite corner of the house, the satellite connects ok and gives me 100mb download speeds which is perfect, but the satellite randomly disconnects, cycles round the colours and then eventually reconnects after about 10 minutes or a restart , this happens around once every 45 minutes.

I appreciate this is probably lacking in information to help diagnose, where can i start to try and get to the bottom of this? any help to get my kids off my back, due to the virus we have been homeschooling and the kids laptops losing connection is causing me a world of pain, please help! :)

What additional info do you need from me to help solve this?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or may not be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

How do i know which channels are unused for 5ghz?

I ran this on my mac and it says that channel 161 is best for 5ghz, but the orbi only has 36,40,44,48.

Load up and install a wfi analyzer in a pad and you can check with this app to see whos using what.

WiFi Analyzer, Net Analyzer, NG WiFi Analytics, or Ubiquity's WiFiman are some apps to check out.

  • The VM router is set to modem mode, and i have set the orbi router to AP mode. I want to do a manual update of the firmware but i cannot login to my sattelite.

When i change channels, do i need to change them on both the router and sattelite? I assume i do... problem is that i cannot login to the sattelite...

I have done a factory reset on the sattelite and tried admin/password without luck, what is the sattelite default username and password?

If your modem is in modem mode, then your Orbi RBR needes to be in ROUTER mode. Not AP mode.

What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

  • After making a raft of changes, the sattelite disconnects still, i logged into the control panel and looked at the logs, and noticed lots of DOS attacks around the time the sattelite disconected, is that a concidence? here is an image of the log

Looks like orbi reports normal behavious as a DOS attack.

Is there a way i can get access to the sattellite log files? (do any exist?)

Do you have any devices connected at the RBS when this happens?

No log at the RBS, unless you wanna look at debug logs under RBS IP address/debug.htm

What mode is your modem in? Last time you mentioned modem only mode and the Orbi was in AP mode which would be an incorrect configuration. I would do this, set the modem back to router mode, then set AP mode ON the RBR, this would be a correct configuration. Then see how the system does.

What FW version do you have loaded on the Orbi system?

  • So i have now set my VM router to router mode, and set my orbi to AP mode.

The rbr50 now randomly disconnects from the router, i  see this in the logs:

and the device is a solid pink colour.

When the rbr50 disconnects, i quickly connect my laptop to the ethernet cable to test it and it connects ok.

Does anyone know what else i can try to help with this?

If I were you I would get rid (if possible) of whatever other 'router' you have and run the Orbi/sats by themselves.

In this forum there are lots of reported problems being reported by folks who try to run 2 routers.

      • Im not sure i can replace, as the virgin media hub 3 uses a coaxial connection (i think its called that) whereas that doesnt exist on the orbi router, i did have the VM router in modem mode and the orbi in router mode, but i swapped it to see if that was causing me the issues.
