Nighthawk MR5200 (M5) - We need your feedback!
Good day Nighthawk Community,
I'm reaching out to you today in hopes of soliciting your help. If anyone is experiencing any issues with the Nighthawk MR5200 (M5) Mobile Hotspot we want to hear from you. We have had a very small handful of reports from around the globe of issues with the following:
- Issues connecting to the cellular 4G or 5G network
- Hotspot randomly rebooting
- Cellular/WiFi connection drops randomly
We are unable to replicate any of these issue but take this feedback very seriously. If you're experiencing any of these issues please feel free to post the details by replying to this topic and I'll ensure it gets passed along to our engineering team.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
Kind Regards,
Christine
Hi,
maybe it is possible to also help with the issue we experience.
We own two MR5200, let's call one "old" and the other one "new".
We use to run "old" with a Vodafone (Germany) SIM which originally came from a "Vodafone GigaCube", some kind of relabeled HUAWEI 5G Router. This setup was running fine for about 12 Month or so, but recently we started to experience interruptions of LTE connections after 12 to 24 hours. Only a reebot of "old" would help getting reconnected.
So we bought "new", used the very same SIM card with it. We experienced, that "new" wouldn't even connect to LTE nor any other band.
So we ordered a fresh SIM card and used in "new" but experienced the very same behaviour. "new" wouldn't connect to any band.
When using the fresh SIM card in "old", we were back to a connect time of about 12 to 24 hours, but then again interruptions of the connection.
JohnPengcould you take a look at the model.json stats if we upload them?
Many thanks in advance!

I've written a program to read the model.json file from my mr5200.
It reads it once a minute then parse info of interest. I'm having a hard time understanding
some of the data. A sample output line:
10:40 > cell: 97602709 - 5GSUB6 Nr5gService, rsrp: -103 dBm rsrq: -14 dB sinr: 12 dB rssi: -73 dBm nr5g: attached: true, sigValid: true - sigRsrp: -79 dBm sigRsrq: -12 dB sigSnr: 5 dB lte: attached: true, sigValid: true - sigRsrp: -103 dBm sigRsrq: -14 dB sigSnr: 12 dB sigRssi: -73 dBm 1
Note that the diag info says that the nr5g signal is attached and valid. It claims an nr5g rsrp of -79dBm.
But the "generic" rsrp is listed as -103dBm, the value listed for the lte signal...
Note that it also claims to be using "currentPSserviceType" 5GSUB6 and "currentNWserviceType" Nr5gService
Am I missing something, or is this an issue. or ...
I ask because I am having an problem with the m5 switching from very good cells to poorer cells (as measured with Speed Test).
It seems to happen when the lte sigRsrp dips below -100dBm, as if it were tracking that instead of the nr5g signal.

I finally had enough of dropped connections with the MR5200 and decided to pull out an old
mofi 4500 V2 to find if the netgear was really the problem. I pulled my AT&T sim card out of
the netgear and installed it into the mofi. Booted up the mofi and based on the cell towers
in my area, I band locked the mofi onto 12/17, pointed my poynting antenna to one of the towers,
3 miles from my location, and for 2 weeks had no uninterrupted internet connection. I now have
consistent 3 bar connection, (not the greatest) but because of all the trees and my location,
I’ll take it all day long! Even though the 700 MHz frequency is not the fastest, it is the
strongest I can lock onto. After 2 weeks of a sound connection with the band locked mofi, I
returned the MR5200 back to amazon for a full refund.Since the Mofi 4500 cell module is old and not capable of 5G when they roll it out in my area
and many other 4G LTE bands, I decided to purchase a Sierra Wireless pre-built EM9191 NR Sub-6
GHz (CAT20) modem module with adapter enclosure from the guys over at The Wireless Haven for
less than the MR5200. Granted it does not have router capability, but I have enough routers
laying around. I installed their recommended GoldenOrb (OpenWRT fork) firmware onto a
Linksys 1900acs V2 router for testing, which will then allow me to control the modem from it.
Their website has a list of compatible routers that the firmware supports and can be loaded onto.
Many Asus, Netgear and other routers.
I will be installing either wireguard or the express vpn ovpn firmware on the router’s firmware
tonight so all my network traffic flows through the vpn, and wait until the new Sierra Wireless
modem arrives . The modem has all the current 5G NR sub-6 bands n1 on up to n79, along with 4G
LTE bands B1 on up to B71, so I should not have any problem staying connected since I will also
have the capability to band lock and enable carrier aggregation if required. When I was troubleshooting the MR5200 and I would watch the signal become very low or when AT&T
would switch bands and/or towers on me, (tower ID visible from their GUI), the express vpn would
interpret that as a lost signal and kill the connection which would require a reboot. Band
locking has eliminated that issue for me using the old mofi 4500.I will update this post once I receive and test out the Sierra Wireless modem module.
Update: I have been running the new cellular modem from The Wireless Haven now for 2 weeks with
NO disconnects!!! I had them build the modem using the latest sierra wireless 5G EM9191 module
and it is rock solid even when only using the 4 paddle antenna’s that come with their modem.
Running express vpn on the router slows my speed somewhat but I chose security over
speed any day. Looking forward to deploying this setup in a 5G location soon and adding 2 of
their 2 x 2 mimo antenna's to connect to the 4 sma ports on the modem for better reception.- steveXXXApprentice

But most of the time its continually switching from good cells to poor ones, requiring frequent reboots... 😡
What carrier are you using?
Did you have to update the IMEI of your sim to make the change?
Or did you need to get a new SIM?

Hi Christine,
i experience random connection drops quite frequently, For me it looks like it happens a little more on 4G and 4G+.
I have a Telekom D Sim card in the Router and frequently use it in D (Telekom), NL (T-Com NL) and P (MEO). Problems are the least in NL in D more frequent and sometimes Problematic in P, When working with a RDP connection i experience a drop in connection and then i have to reconnect to the server. I suspect that it is the mobile connection since the sidecar connection as a second Display still seams to work.
The drops happen also while playing Brawl Stars. It looks it happens in random time intervals but then resulting in frequent drops, waiting for a reconnect mostly is then followed by a drop and i switch to mollie iPad connection (same Provider).
Yesterday at FNC airport i had a wild behaviour while downloading medium sized files from my Nextcloud the connection dropped every 1-2min resulting in a closed connection on the NC client for 20min while that was happening i found your post. I was not able to download 4GB (125 files) switching to iPad resulted in a smooth DL.

Thank you Netgear for the great support (NOT!) and this **bleep**ty and expensive product. Just waiting 1 year for some firmware upgrade to fix it is enough!
I'm a software architect in real life, I will fire all of your dev team. Unacceptable!

Hi,
I found a new way to hang the M5. Have been using direct Ethernet to the main switch. Decided to tether a Beryl router
to the M5 USB port to get a few Ethernet ports at the hot spot station. Seemed ok until I ran speedtest.com. Total hang
of the M5, no front-panel, no pings, the app couldn't even see it. Tried several different cables, always the same.Restored to original direct Ethernet connection and no more hangs. Anyone else seeing hangs when tethered?
- I have been using the Nighthawk M5 for two months and experiencing a frequent 4G LTE fallback to 3G H+ this month.
Sometimes it will revert back to 4G LTE but most of the time it needed a reboot.
Setting the band to 4G and 5G will result in network searching and unable to connect.
Is there a way around this?- steveXXXApprentice
I've had this issue since I bought my M5 several months back. I wrote a program to monitor
it once per minute. Summarized output from lat 24 hours:
$ grep considered log ##### cell 97602709 is considered good ##### cell 97602568 is considered good ##### cell 97602709 is considered good ##### cell 97602568 is considered good ##### cell 97602709 is considered good ##### cell 97602568 is considered good ##### cell 97602709 is considered good ##### cell 97602568 is considered good ##### cell 97602709 is considered good ##### cell 97602568 is considered good ##### cell 97602709 is considered good ##### cell 97602568 is considered good ##### cell 97602577 is considered bad
It will stay on this bad cell indefinitely, until I reboot:
07:22 > cell changed from 97602577 to 97602568 ##### cell 97602568 is considered good ##### reboot detected @ April 29 2022, 7:23:04am MDT
Speedtest, before reboot:
After reboot (ie good cell again):

We lose access to the Nighthawk M5 whenever a software update is pushed.
APN settings get deleted and go to the default one.
All other settings remain.
- steveXXXApprentice
Where do you find software updates? I've looked on the M5 website but don't see any.,...
- PeoplespaceAspirant
When we login to the Nighthawks GUI, you can go to Firmware updates and check to see if there is a new one.
- gator007AspirantWill not stay connected to 5G, keeps dropping back to 4G. My old M1 in 4G test around 50+ mbps. My new MR5200 with the same sim and in the same spot clocks in at 7 mbps. One of the few times I've connected to 5G it clocked in at 78 mbps. Tomorrow I wiil take it over where a 5G UC tower is and re-test. So far the unit has been very disappointing 😞

- gator007AspirantUpdate:
The M5 was not the problem. Our normally reliable cell tower near our house was having data problems. I took the M5 5 miles down the road to a good tower and it was awsome. Using the M5 with my S21+ connected via wifi 6 approximately 3 feet apart the download was 605 mbps with a 91 upload speed and a ping of 71. Now if they can just get our home tower reliable again I'll be a happy camper.. Customer service told us they were upgrading equipment. Sorry I blamed the new M5 for the problem, it rocks!- Occasionally the M5 still fails to reconnect to the 4G+ network automatically after dropped out and when this happens the M5 web admin page will also fails to login (access denied) but can be accessed by the NetGear mobile app and showed the M5 either searching for network and or connected to a network that have no access.
Editing the APN settings by changing the Authentication from PAP to CHAP followed by SAVE and then CHAP back to PAP and then SAVE again restores the 4G+ connection. Is this a bug?
It would be nice if this toggling for reconnection could be automated in the firmware when disconnected as this simply means the M5 isn't stable enough to be used as a permanent home or office Internet hotspot replacement.

I've had this product for a year now gathering dust on the shelve, because it is practically unusable. Pings (to direct IP addresses like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8) timeout most of the times. DNS queries succeed every fourth try (or so). I've used Zyxel's product for the time being, until the battery on it was fried today and I had to take the MR5200 into use again. The MR5200 firmware had an update, so I did that hoping that the issue would have gone away, but to no avail. Attached is a screenshot of a ping made directly from my router.

I would like to say something positive about M5 this device but I can't.
Maybe except that it is quite expansive paperweight. I bought it under the influence of advertising in Poland similar to this one. Connection to the internet failed or gone. Website canot co

Any GSM operator from Poland is missing from the list. For your information, Orange PL is the biggest.
What I did:1) The sim card works properly in other devices where there is no problem with internet connection.
2) The sim card works in the device, recognizes the network and grants quite a strong LTE connection.
3) DNS is not assigned (0: 0: 0: 0) or only temporary.
4) In the operator settings I tested and with the help of JohnPeng (Expert Netgear) in the community various settings with APN.
a) Indicated by him
b) Automatically downloaded by the device
c) Indicated on the operator's website for both IPv4 and IPv6
https://www.orange.pl/omnibook/konfiguracja-internetu-mms-sms-w-telefonie.
d) persistent frosty variations with authentication types (none, pap, chap, pap / chap) / without and without a username and password.5) In the operator settings (network type) we tested indicating the operator both automatically and manually.
6) We tested different bands in the operator settings (ALL, ALL LTE, WCDMA and LTE + NR5G)
7) JSON log was analyzed with Expert confirmed that the router is connected to the operator's network.
😎 The DHCP / Mask settings were checked in the mobile router settings
9) Automatic and manual DNS mode was checked in the mobile router settings
a) As indicated by the operator
b) google 8: 8: 8: 8 to 8: 8: 4: 4
10) In the DHCP settings of the mobile router, default 192.168.1.20 to 192.168.1.99
11) We checked that the device on the WiFi network was assigned an IP address from the pool.
12) We checked the connection on various devices, mobile / laptop and operating systems.
13) We restarted the router after the changes were made.
14) We have restored the router to its factory settings many timesAny help?
- Most likely your M5's hardware is faulty.
I must admit that the M5 is the fastest mobile hotspot I own and it really shines when it works. It's likely that the problems I mentioned in the earlier posts are all related to the occasional drop out and unable to auto reconnect without toggling the authentication in the APN settings. If this software bug is solved in the next firmware update it will be the perfect mobile hotspot device.- tomekfAspirant

They do not offer paid support where someone could to check this device. Software is not available for manual re-installation.
The new update is not available and no one do not have such information when it could be (form last year nothing change).John Peng make really great job here but in number of request and problems he ask couple of times about same issue.
There is a mass of unsatisfied customers.
Netgear Poland spends money on sponsored articles praising the device and 5G connectivity -in Poland. But his support inform that Polish network is not compatible. And we do not have any polish carriers on this list.

Hi,
MR5200 in france, used with external 5G antennas, replacing another 4G modem.
The MR5200 is hooked as a modem only to a Synology 2600ac that is fallbacking on my DSL connection if the 5G/4G is lost.
When using the ethernet port , randomly (either few minutes, les ours or less frequently a day) the ethernet connection is kind of lost, it is even worth if using IP passthrough.
USB seems a little bit more stable (but unfortunately the Synology seems to limit the bandwidth to 70/80Mbps in that case, but seems unrelated to the Netgear, as when Ethernet is working I'm reaching way higher throughput).
There is a full Thread on this: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Mobile-Routers-Hotspots-Modems/Netgear-Nighthawk-M5-MR5200-WAN-issue/td-p/2058528

Hi all,
I am currently trying to register and fully create a PDU session in 5G SA with the MR5200 but I am failing to to it (I have succeeded with other smartphone terminals).
Indeed, I have a testing 5G SA platform on which I have configured an end to end 5G SA architecture (core + GNB) in test plmn id 001 01.When I try to scan available networks, the MR5200 doesn't seem to find my network (this network is available for other 5G SA devices such as smartphones).
Is the MR5200 locked for a restricted list of PLMN IDs ? Only operators ones ? Is it possible to use test PLMN IDs (such as 00101, 20880, 20890, ...) ?
Thanks in advance for your support and help.
BR.
I will NEVER EVER buy a netgear product again! It's 1 year that we are waiting for a firmware update to fix ETH Bridge Mode. It's a SHAME.
Netgear, you got my "good working" money for it.
- kevdyasAspirantI have a UK purchased MR5200 and it works fine there. On holiday in Portugal I use a NOS SIM and it won’t connect to 5G (used 4G+ without a problem) yet my UK SIM when used in roaming will connect to 5G without any issues. 5G service is active on NOS side (confirmed in store too)
- Login to your Nighthawk MR5200, go to settings->Network ->APN and check that there is an entry for 5G and set as default.
Sometimes the wireless hotspot may not set the APN correctly after swapping SIMs.
Check with the carrier for APN settings.

Adding to the noise... my M5 disconnects from LTE seemingly at random. I sometimes can go a couple days without having to restart. But, more often than not, I'm starting my M5 1-4 times a day. I see that people have been asking for a fix for this for a while now. Netgear, you should know by know that this is an issue. Why are you not doing anything? Not that it matters, but I've always recommended your products to family and friends, but I may need to stop.
Use case:
- M5 (wifi off, IP passthrough on)
