Re: Can't reset switch to factory defaults

Hello,

I do not have support on my switch so I can't call support.    The switch has a password on it and I can press the reset button for 5 seconds, 10 seconds, a few days and it will not reset the password.

I've hooked up a usb cable and am connected with CLI.  Some web pages say press 2, some say 13, some say 14 as soon as possible.

I must be either using the wrong number or doing it at the wrong time as I still get to the admin login and blank and 1234 and password for the password do not work.

    Moving target opening yet another thread? Mind you we are community members, not paid Netgear support please.

    This is the formal way - permitting the serial console remains workable, and the switch isn't completely dead - you have to break the boot process to get access to the boot menu:

    M4300 Resetting to factory default using the boot menu

    The "trick" breaking the boot process is nicely documented - press and hold the Q key ...

      Thanks!  - I got there but was unable to reset it - it kept asking for the admin username and password and blank as the PW did not work.   I ended up at the point of just being stuck at the M4300R2 prompt as I must have cleared the entire config.

      I've set up a tftp on my PC

      I have the firmware file loaded as far as I can tell -- not sure the next step

        Why ever. Strictly following the https://kb.netgear.com/30329/M4300-Resetting-to-factory-default-the-boot-menu would have saved a lot of time and effort. It's not difficult at all - just do it:

        ==========

        As you have ended at the m4300r2> prompt - assuming your tftp server is reachable - on the switch console, type the following command on the console:

        copy tftp://<tftp server IP address><image name> image1 or image2

        The switch will ask to confirm with input data displayed. Hit enter if all parameters look correct. The file transfer process should take about two minutes, then the new firmware will be checked for possible corruption, if all checked out, it will report firmware successfully upgraded.

        “<tftp server IP address>” is the IP address where the TFTP server is running. The “<image name>” is the new firmware to upgrade to, and make sure the file is stored in the TFTP root directory. Select either to upgrade the image1 or image2.

        This copies the switch image from the tftp server into the image1 resp. the image2 section on the flash.

        To use CLI to change the image to be used in the next reboot, type the following command:

        boot system <image1 or image2>

        And issue the following command to reboot:

        reload

        ==========

        No idea if this will recover your switch to a workable condition. I hope you have not destroyed the startup menu code with these experiments.

        If not ... I'm out at that point, because anything else is beyond my pure community member competence as I'm not Netgear here.
