Please navigate to the link below for step-by-step instructions on how to update your RBR850/RBS850:
NOTE: Orbi app or the routers web page may not report seeing new FW updates. NG may not push this to there auto update services immediately and may activate the newer FW update being seen on there auto update services at a later time. User will have the choice to manually update if you want too.
NOTE: The Disable Auto Update feature only prevents ANY new FW from being installed if available. This does NOT prevent the system from checking NG services to see if new FW is available. If new FW is available, this will be displayed as a notification to the user on the RBRs web page only. It will be up to the user to upgrade FW or not.
A factory reset maybe needed if problems are encountered after the FW update:

I've tried this version of FW and can confirm that the mysterious reboots no longer happen with email logging disabled after a factory reset. Hope this works for everyone else that saw this issue on prior versions of FW.

So far has updated nicely and running smoothly. Will let you know how it goes after some usage.
Only issue is a minor typo on the tick box "Support Automatic Priviate IP Addressing (APIPA)". Priviate rather than Private. No big deal, just pointing it out for the next updates to come.

EDIT: Sorry I now read that this is normal.
I'm still running 4.6.8.2 which is pretty stable here.
When I check for firmware update it says Firmware is up to date.
Is this normal behaviour?

I can finally use the iOS app to connect locally without disabling iCloud Private Relay.
Unfortunately the speed test no longer works reliably from the web interface; seems like every other attempt fails and the passing attempts report low speeds (~400) compared to what I used to see (~1400). The app seems to regularly work but reports a range of 400-700. My wired device reports an expected result of 940 for its connection. Maybe the test is no longer detecting the closest source and maybe multi stream is no longer on?
- Any Additional reports or confirmations that this fixes the reboot issues? Would like to cancel my ebay listing.
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STBP is recommended if your ISP service box supports 2.5Gb WAN port connection rate.
What browser are you using?
Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update?

I'm using a privately-owned Arris SB2800 with link aggregation enabled and an Orbi RBR850 with WAN aggregation enabled (and active). The service is XFinity 1200 Mbit and I previously saw 1400/40 speeds via the Orbi speed test from both the web interface and the iOS app.
The hardwired speed tests are done using the AppleTV Ookla Speed test app where I previously and still currently see 940 (the max via the 1 gigabit connection).
I have not factory reset and started over.

Hi,
Thank you for this information,
I have RBK857 system - RBR850 with six RBS850
Can I / should I update all satellites at the same time or is it one by one?
When I read 'how to update' it seems to assume one RBS unit.
Then update the RBR unit.
Thank you for your assistance,
Andy.
I can have the RBS web pages all open at once pre-stage, navigate to the RBS FW file on each page, do same thing on the RBRs manual FW update page. Then Send the RBS file one on each after the file gets up loaded. I usually wait to see the upgrade % circle to appear on each of the RBS web pages, once I see that, I send the RBRs FW file. If you want to do that. Mostly one at a time with each RBS first then the RBR lastly.

Hi,
I need a bit of help!
Currently all ORBI devices are v4.6.3.16 (Router + 6 Sat)
From orbi app (v2.19.1.3) I get a firmware update issue please try again/later or words to that effect
From orbi login the 'auto' page says either 'no new firmware available' (Route +3xSat) or 'service unreachable' (3xsat)
manual updates, downloaded latest files , unzipped but when I 'upload' I get 'firmware upgrade failed. please try later' - This is when uploading the firmware file (not the next step of upgrading devices).
I have used 2 different unzip programmes, and downloaded from Netgear several times.
Any thoughts / suggestion please ?
This is laptop directly wired to Orbi router, wifi on laptop off, power not battery, chrome web page. VPN off.
Thank you,
Andy.
- Eriksen76ApprenticeI upgraded manually. First sat1, then sat2 and lastly router. Then finally a power off on all 3 units and my Internet box. Then I switched on all units one after one. Starting with Internet box, router and lastly sattelites. No problems so far, everything went flawless.
Make sure you make a new backup config to file for safe keeping.

Update to 4.6.9.11 went flawlessly, no problems. Manually updated satellites first, then router. After succesfull updates I turned off power on router and satellites for a few minutes. Everything came back online as expected. Immediately turned off automatic updates to keep control 🙂. And of course downloaded a new backup-systemfile as advised by FURRYe38 . System still stable!
Enjoy. 📡

upgrade to this version went smoothly. however, I previously had telnet enabled via my config using a much older FW. Once I upgraded to 4.6.9.11, telnet no longer works and I cannot enable it (even with the debug.htm screen and enabling the hidden checkbox)
- WRSORBILuminary
Firmware upgrade on RBK852 went flawless. Noticeable performance improvements. Backed up config, RBS update, then RBR. Factory reset RBR. Powered off modem, RBR & RBS for one minute then powered up modem, RBR &RBR and let each complete reboot before powering on the next. Reloaded RBR backup config. Only anomaly is SpeedTest not working through web interface. Works fine on apps.
- WRSORBILuminaryFinger fault….Powered off modem, RBR & RBS for one minute then powered up modem, RBR & RBS and let each complete reboot before powering on the next.

Hi all,
I disabled updates via the GUI yesterday. I use the 850s in AP mode only.
The attached logs from just a moment ago today from my SonicWall (which has rules to block attempts by the RBR and RBS's from going to any netgear update site) are attached.
It still seems to be reaching out to the update site even after I toggled it off.
Any thoughts?

This could be semantics. "Block automatic updates" is not exactly the same as "Do not check if there are firmware updates available." The only way the router can inform the user that there is new firmware is by learning about it. Then, it's the user who decides to update or not.

Makes sense to me however I've learned the hard way to trust first but confirm rigorously.

Since my update to 4.6.9.11 I noticed some differences in clients keeping their connection with satellites. I have an IP-cam (2.4 Ghz) on 3 meter distance from one of my satellites. With previous firmware, this camera initially connected to this satellite, but soon it switched to the RBR (which is 12 meters away). I lowered the transmitting power of 2.4 Ghz to 25%, but that made no difference. Now, with the new firmware, this IP-cam has been connected to the nearby satellite for two days already (in my opinion, as it should be). Seems like an improvement. Did anyone else notice this too?

I concur...I'm seeing better distribution on the 2.4ghz on the satellites. I had mine turned down to 50% and most everything was connected to the router with the exception of the devices really far away (120ft away outdoor camera). Now, devices are connecting to the closest access point for the most part.
Finally Netgear gave us our disable auto updates swtich! No more dropping Zoom/Teams calls when Orbi decides to update! And we get to check the forums before we update to see it's been properly vetted!

I noticed exactly the same: much more stable for my 2.4GhZ IP camera which now connects to the expected satellite, rather than to the more distant router?
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS📡 to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

After upgrading, my voip phone no longer works. It appears that the SIP ALG is enabled no regardless of what the setting shows in the UI.
What VoIP phone do you have?
Did you factory reset and setup from scratch after applying the FW update?

It's a polycom, and no I didn't do a factory reset. I have gone and told it to enable then disable SIP ALG again, and no effect. Worked fine prior to the firmware update. I'll try a full reset next, but if that's necessary the level of incompetence at NG is astonishing.

Since this firmware update, 4.6.9.11, all my devices have kept dropping off the network. Having issues with Kasa plugs and my cameras. I did a factory reset and still having the same problem. I called Netgear, and they said others are having the issue and go back to Firmware 4.6.8.5. I was still waiting for second-level support to call.

https://kb.netgear.com/31029/Where-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite 📡How many RBS do you have deployed?
What channels are you using? Auto? Try Auto and 48 on 5Ghz. Or try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and 40 to 48 channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set CTS to 2347. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s). Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

4000 sq home, RBK853 with Cat6 Backhaul, 1(RBR850) 2(RBS850), Comcast CM1150V, Live in a neighborhood with 40 homes, everyone broadcasting. Everything was working until the Firmware upgrade. Then everything keeps dropping. I went back to 4.6.8.5 everything works again without doing a factory reset

Interesting. I just bought the 853 and set it up only to discover my Kasa plugs and bulbs are having constant disconnects. Thought maybe it just wasn’t compatible with my IOT goodies. I was planning to return the Orbi this weekend, but maybe it’s just a firmware bug.
- scorn242Apprentice
Hi all. While this gets researched by the manufacturer (potentially indicated below), might it be a good time to ensure all the IoT devices have had their own firmware checked and updated if available?
Just to cover all possibilities.

Some info RE guest Network that might be of help to Netgear.....
I have 850 with 6 satellites on 2 different sites
Below relates to a system on this latest firmware
Yesterday while checking setting via on site web IP I noticed
When in "Basic" mode nothing unusual re wi fi guest
When in "Advanced" mode as soon as you enter "wireless" tab the guest wifi jumps ON even if the tick box is blank (off), leave the tab and guest turns OFF.
Also when "apply"ing whilst in wireless tab the Wi fi guest will switch on and off within that save process - again with guest set off.
This repeated a number of times.
I have a name in the guest SSID as previous this was in use - I did not check with guest SSID blank (deleted) or factory blank
I had an iphone next to me looking at wifi signals available
PLEASE NOTE - I was not deliberately checking this , I just noticed it doing other things and so changed tab a few times to confirm.
This may be of help,
Thank you,
Andy.

Same problem here, Guest wifi is uncontrolable, turning on without notice. I noticed the same issue with the previous fw though (4.6.8.5) !

Might be better to post screen captures of what your doing...

Hi Yes I have 2 orbi systems in different properties both router plus 6 sats.
Basic and Advanced are the two tabs at the top of the page ORBI page accessed via direct IP address - image attached
I'm not having any issue with this - Others posted about the guest wifi being on when they had the box unticked (off) - I mentioned this as I was able to create a scenario with guest wifi on when it should be off - AND how it happened in the hope it may be of use to those trying to replicate the issue and resolve.

This firmware seems to have scrambled my entire setup (with a little help by me it seems).
Am running RBR850 in AP mode, with 3 satellites connected by wired backhaul. For some stupid reason I opened the Orbi app on my iPad on Friday and it showed a new firmware available. So I stupidly pressed the button. I believe I must have been looking at the router as it only updated the firmware on the router.
Then the mess began. All of my satellites disappeared from my network map. Went straight to the computer to check, and all satellites showed as disconnected. Logged directly into one of the satellites and, of course, different firmware version. Ok, no problem, I will update the 3 satellites manually, which I did. All satellites came back up fine, blue light etc. and were serving internet just fine.
Return to admin GUI and still all satellites show disconnected (but seem to be still working, although no longer show as part of the network). Ok, so let’s try resetting one of the sats to factory and re-adding the satellite. So I paperclip one of the RBS850’s and it gets weirder - 7 seconds and no amber flashing but red flashing - but satellite seems to have reset as password has reverted to default. Try to now add new satellite to the router but it fails, cannot sync the satellite.
Now at the point where I am not sure what to do. System ‘seems to be working’ although it says things are wrong. So leave it alone. Or revert back to previous firmware and hope for best, or reset everything to factory and start again…
Any advise on best direction gladly appreciated !

No, have not reset the entire setup, just one satellite. I did not want to as its a bit of a pain (going back to Router mode etc.). And all was working fine - sats show disconnected but they are functioning as they should, all devices are working fine (they just show that they are connected to the router as opposed to the satellite).
Bigger problem is that I pulled one satellite out, removed it from the GUI, reset it to factory, and now I cannot get it to sync back with the router, and am suspecting that yet again I will have to switch back to router mode to sync this satellite....meh
