Orbi 960 not obtaing a DHCP address from upstream carrier 5G modem/router.

I'm having issues with an ORBI 960.

Details of the ORBI router are;

Hardware Version                        RBRE960

Firmware Version                         V7.2.7.15_5.1.16

GUI Language Version               V3.0.3.12_2.1.30.3

Protection Engine Version      2.2.214.4/1.0.0.2049

Operation Mode                            Router

The Orbi system has been working without issue for the last 2 ½ years with the previous internet provided which was delivered via Hybrid Fibre/Cable to a ARRIS CM8200 cable modem, feeding a Telstra Smart modem 3 which did a NAT of the WAN IP to a private IPV4 of 192.168.0.1/24, DNS was Cloudflare Family (1.0.0.2, 1.1.1.2) and a DHCP range of 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254.

We have signed up for a new internet service delivered by a mobile 5G service. The carrier provided router is Nokia Fastmile 3 model 5G12-13W-A.

The issue is that the orbi does not obtain an IP address when the WAN port of the ORBI is connected to any of the LAN ports on the Nokia fast mile. The WAN IP address of ORBI show as 0.0.0.0 and the light stays purple. All ports on the Nokia Fastmile are confirmed as known good, as is the CAT7 ethernet cables. The same Cat7 cable as ran between the Nokia and the Netgear Orbi can be plugged into my HP zBook ethernet port, obtains an IP and speeds of around 400/140

If I set  a fixed IP on the orbi, and reboot, without connecting to the Nokia to the WAN port, the ORBI will show the fixed IP.  Plug the Nokia into the WAN port, and the IP address clears to 0.0.0.0 leave the subnet mask and default gateway.

There is only limited options available on the carrier firmware on the Nokia, there is no option to place in bridge mode.

Does the ISP router show the RBR as being connected to the ISP router on it's web page somewhere?

Does the RBR show a connection rate being seen on it's web page under Advanced tab, show stats button?

Wondering if connection rate between RBR and your ISP router isn't working right.

Happen to have a non managed 1Gb LAN switch that you could put in between the RBR and your ISP router and connect only these two items to this switch?

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

    Couple of options,

    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.

    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers

    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

    Try option #2 first...

If normal connection doesn't work, try option 3 for AP mode.

Your also behind on FW as well...something to update FW and see...

  • The original post does not specify:

    • What became of the Arris and Telstra equipment.  They are no longer connected, correct?
    • What 'mode' the Orbi system is in. ('router' or 'access point')

At some point, it might be a good idea to update the Orbi firmware to the current release (v7.2.8.5) satellites first, router last.  The system does not need to be connected to the internet for this process.  Just download the installation files from Netgear and perform the update while connected to the satellites and router locally.

Although a Factory Reset on the Orbi system can involve a bit of effort (about two hours of tedious typos in my case), when "things aren't right" sometimes a Factory Reset is appropriate.
