Brand new Samsung S6 Smartphone will not communicate with WN3000RP
I have 2 other devices, a notebook and another android that communicate just fine, but my brand new S6 will not hook up to the extender. I have reset the modem, the extender, and the phone itself. I have told my phone to "forget" that particular connection and have re-set it up to no avail. When I try to connect, it says "connecting" for a minute or so then it tries again, and then finally it says "failed to obtain IP address."

- FairytailVirtuosoDoes it work on a different wireless network?
- bobnelmsAspirantYes, it works on different wireless networks. The only network is does not work on is the network offered through the extender.
- FairytailVirtuosoCan you set a static IP on your S6 in range with the extender's IP.
- bobnelmsAspirantI would not know how to set a static IP on my S6. How would I do that?
- Babylon5NETGEAR Employee RetiredThis might help, it includes the details for a static IP address, though I’m not sure if this applies to the device as a whole or the specific network. If it is a device wide setting then it can cause problems if you connect to other networks (because the IP address may not be on the same subnet, or if it is that IP may already be allocated).
The instructions mention DNS but you should also set the device IP address and the Gateway, as a test use a high number in the DHCP range of the router e.g. 192.168.1.222. If it works and you choose to stick with the setting then reduce the router DHCP range e.g. end at 192.168.1.200

Is this possibly a function of a new phone trying to communicate through an old extender? If so, should I simply purchase a new extender? - Babylon5NETGEAR Employee RetiredA static IP will often help with connection issues, or at least reduce the symptoms to something easier to understand. So it seems that your phone is now associating with the network. The lack of Internet access could be for a number of reasons;
• The modem has no Internet connection
• The router is not communicating with the modem
• The extender is not communicating with the router
• The DNS server(s) are down / not communicating
Did you set the DNS addresses when you set the static IP?
Can you log into the extender and look at its status to check if it’s communicating with the router, and if so log into the router to see if it has an Internet connection? - bobnelmsAspirantThanks for your help, but I'm afraid I'm not doing something right.
First of all, the extender that I am trying to use works fine for all other devices that use it in my home (another smart phone, a tablet, and 2 laptops). So it's not that the extender cannot connect to the internet. I has to be a setting within my new Galaxy S6 smartphone, or perhaps the extender is incompatible with this S6?.
Please remember that my S6 DOES connect to and communicate with the internet just fine through the wireless router (not extender but router). This is only an issue with the connection to the extender.
So here are my questions:
1. What static IP address should I be using? Should it be the address of the extender itself, i.e., 192.168.1.15? That's what I tried. Or do I simply make up an address?
2. What DNS 1 and DNS 2 address should I use? The example in the link used 8.8.8.8, and 8.8.4.4, so that's what I used. Is this right?
3. And what about the PROXY setting? I currently have it set to NONE. Is this right?
Thanks again - Babylon5NETGEAR Employee Retired

1. Use a high DHCP address e.g. 192.168.1.222, this is only intended as a test at the moment to identify the issue, but the address you used will definately not work.
2. use the suggested DNS
3. No proxy is needed.- Hans-ErikAspirant
Hello!
I have exacly the same problem with my EX6200. It works fine with my laptop (Win 8.1), but not with my Galaxy Note 4, nor with Tab 10.1 2014 Ed. All devices communicate without problem directly with the router (Thomson TR789vn). Is there a solution for this problem??

Hi,
I had exactly the same issue with a brand new Samsung GS6 : "Failed to obtain IP address". All my other devices work fine (MacBook, iPhone, Z2 tablet).
I changed WiFi settings on my SG6 : Static mode with IP address = 192.168.1.222. Now, my SG6 is connected to the WN3000RP (the signal is very strong), but not connected to the internet : all my connections fail (chrome, google play, ...)
Thanks for help.
- SwithinAspirantI've got the same problem as bobnelms. In fact, I'm responding with my Galaxy S4 which is connected through the WN3000RP range extender to a WNDR4000 router. It has worked for years, and continues to. But when I try to connect with a Galaxy S6 Edge plus (AT&T), I get errors. The Galaxy S6 Edge plus connects directly to the WNDR4000 with no problem. It (phone) also connects to an Xfinity router as well. It's only a problem with the range extender. I have two range extenders and neither work with this new phone. I've rebooted the network, rebooted the extender, reset the extender, etc. I even tried turning off LTE on the phone as someone suggested on another forum (didn't work). That sounded dubious, but it was easy to try.
I have to believe there is some incompatibility between the extender and the S6.
I'll keep searching the internets. If I find an answer somewhere else, I'll post it here.
Oh, and iPhones 4, 5s, and 6, as well as a nexus tablet can connect to the extenders with no problem for me also.
Perhaps I need to copy this to a Samsung Galaxy forum instead since all these other devices have no problem with the range extender.- nhannNETGEAR Employee Retired
Please try disabling the Smart Network Switch.
Another possible solution is to clear your phone's system cache.- SwithinAspirant
Easy enough to try. The Smart Network Switch was already off; I believe I left it off from trying it before. But I confirmed it was off. I then cleared the system "cached data", then rebooted the phone. I received the "failed to obtain IP address" message again. It identified the extender as having a strong signal (130Mbps) and the correct security protocol, of course. It just couldn't connect. It immediately tried connecting directly to the wireless router and that worked. So, I believe those suggestions have not resolved the problem. Thanks anyway.
In looking at the android forums, it appears that at least a few others are having problems with the GS6 and range extenders, not necessarily Netgear brand. It's a little tough to discern because people often mash different problems together in the same thread and without a decent testing methodology and analysis, it's easy to confuse issues. I think the commonality is the phone and not the Netgear device. Maybe something in the extender is slightly different, but why would other devices (GS4, Nexus tablet, iPhones) connect successfully?
I think I'll wait for a software update via Samsung and AT&T for my situation, unless someone comes up with a new idea to try.
