ReadyNAS OS 6.9.3 | Run on existing x86 (4.2) #notsupported
There are a few threads on this, showing how to convert 6.0 firmware to run on the 4.2 platform.
I am combining the information here, so it is easier to digest.
This is UNSUPPORTED by NETGEAR. Do so at your own risk, without support from NTGR.
You need to factory default after converting your NAS to the new platform, BACKUP YOUR DATA!
ReadyNAS OS 6 will only work on 64-bit systems (Ultra/Pro), the NVX/2100v1 models are 32-bit and thus are not supported.
Here are pre-built images for the lazy:
- R4toR6_Prep_Addon.bin (26 KB) (upload first, don't reboot, avoids the need for manual factory default in between)
- R4toR6_6.9.5.bin (67.6 MB)(upload after add-on)
After you upload the addon/firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default. Your system should be back up in less than 10 minutes running the new firmware.
If you want to build the image on your own, you can follow the steps from this wiki article:
$ wget -q ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.zip
$ unzip -q ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.zip
$ head -n1 ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.img
info::name=ReadyNASOS,version=6.0.4,time=1364529349,size=49301504,md5sum=4086b247f29be084549f2b150ada8a70,arch=x86_64,descr=ReadyNASOS
$ echo -n 'info::name=RAIDiator-x86,version=6.0.4,time=1364529349,size=49301504,md5sum=4086b247f29be084549f2b150ada8a70,arch=x86,descr=ReadyNASOS for 4.2!' > newhead
$ dd conv=notrunc if=newhead of=ReadyNASOS-6.0.4-x86_64.img
Basically, changes the ::name and ::arch in the header to match with what RAIDiator 4.2 expects.

- NeyAspirantJust wanted to say that i sucessfully performed the system update, and the NAS is now building the raid array (estimated time 26-28 hours UGH). Should I let it rebuild before i migrate data over to it? Only having my data in one location isn't nice, want to have a full duplicate backup up and running again as soon as possible, so the sooner I can start the better.
Now I also have a small issue, the dashboard says my Fan is dead, although it is spinning merrily. I replaced the stock fan with the popular Noctua one (which comes heavily recommended here) because the bearings died on the stock one. Is there something one can do to get the dashboard to recognize the fan, or is it just something I have to live with? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou can start copying the data across, though of course at lower speeds than once the volume is redundant.
Firstly for the fan issue if you are not already running the latest 6.1.9 RC update to that and see if it helps.
You could perhaps see if a modified version of the file suggested here helps: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=411650#p411650
Note the paths might be different as you are using a 3rd party fan. - SamosAspirantHello all.
The upgrade works well on a Ultra2. I have put addons, my sites, ... all was ok
But now, raidar found my nas, but can't load the admin page (also trouble with the launch of apache)
How can i fix this?
If I do a firmware default reinstall (without loss of files), Will it put a 4.x.x firmware or 6.X.X ?
Thx for all - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAn OS Re-install will re-install OS6. The update processed involved replacing the files on the internal flash. The files on the internal flash are used for OS Re-installs etc.
Do you have SSH access?
If so, what is the output of the following?:
# tail -n 20 /var/log/apache2/error.log
# systemctl status apache2 - SamosAspirantThx mdgm for your very fast reply :).
Yeah I have SSH access, file access, ...
Just apache seems to crash.
And that's it :
I have create virtualhosts in "/etc/apache2/sites-enabled", but i have error in one of them, so can't restart apache
After deleting this virtualhost, apache restart.
And i have my frontview.
But thx you for your help :) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou're welcome.
Always a good idea to look at the error log for apache if it's not running to get an indication as to why. - SamosAspirantYep, next time, i think about it ;)
- LitozAspirantHello Forum,
So I've upgraded my Ultra 2 to the Os 6.1.8 and then through the web UI upgraded to 6.1.9. Thing here is that I've read that initially there was some loud fan issues, my problem goes the other way arround according to the UI the fan speed is below 800rpm and CPU temp are 58 C+. Is this way too high?
Can I use some tricks to set fan speed not to drop below....100rpm? (I'm aware of the bearing wear off this might have if I abuse off it)
Some images of my status
All help apreciatted - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThose temps are fine.
- utdrmacAspirant+1 for this. I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 2 and this worked just great! No fan issues. Yay for community support!
