Rsnapshot installed...nothing is happening...
Hi all, I've just installed this addon and commented out the following line in the addons-config/rsnapshot/rsnapshot.conf file :
backup /etc/ localhost/
which should backup my etc folder to the snapshot.
But....nothing is happening....
Should Rsync be activated in the frontview even if in the rsnapshot.conf file there's already this line :
# rsync must be enabled for anything to work. This is the only command that
# must be enabled.
cmd_rsync /usr/bin/rsync
Here's the rsnapshot.conf file :

What happens when you run rsnapshot in test mode with this command?rsnapshot -t hourly
By the way, I would change three things in your configuration:- Change "interval hourly 2" to "interval hourly 6". Rsnapshot runs the "hourly" script once every four hours to create a snapshot; you are telling it to retain only the last two of those. It would be safer to retain an entire day's worth of snapshots, and it would cost very little storage space.
- Uncomment the "rsync_short_args" line.
- Uncomment the "du_args" line.
Remember to use only tabs -- never spaces -- between elements on each line of your config file.michelefaccini wrote: Should Rsync be activated in the frontview even if in the rsnapshot.conf file there's already this line :

I don't know whether it matters... But it couldn't hurt. It's enabled from within Frontview on my NAS. - Change "interval hourly 2" to "interval hourly 6". - michelefacciniAspirantTo avoid any problem, I decided to execute these kind of tests on my ReadyNas Ultra 2 Plus virtualized with VirtualBox.
I set up the rsnapshot.conf as you told me...waiting that something happens
At the following link I found this http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2010/09/rsy ... -examples/
and tried to execute the following command from PHP Shell 2.4 :
$ rsync -v /backup/config.inc.php /snapshot/config.inc.php
Obtaining the following message :
sent 892 bytes received 31 bytes 1846.00 bytes/sec
total size is 814 speedup is 0.88
rsync: mkstemp "/snapshot/.config.inc.php.lQ16RU" failed: Permission denied (13)
rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1070) [sender=3.0.9]
PS : I enabled the rsync from Frontview and put read/write privileges on the backup and snapshot share folders.
I don't understand why in the error message the file I have to copy (which is config.inc.php) has an .lQ16RU added ?
Executing the same command from the Putty shell, the task is accomplished and I obtain :
sent 892 bytes received 31 bytes 1846.00 bytes/sec
total size is 814 speedup is 0.88 - fastfwdVirtuoso
michelefaccini wrote: I set up the rsnapshot.conf as you told me...waiting that something happens
That is a good start. Please also try the two commands I suggested and post the output here.michelefaccini wrote: $ rsync -v /backup/config.inc.php /snapshot/config.inc.php

That file is a temporary file created by rsync. The user running rsync must have read/write permissions on the folder contents and the folder itself, and if you're running rsync as root, you might need to give everyone read/write permissions on the folder and its contents.
But now I'm confused. Are you trying to backup your NAS using rsync, or rsnapshot? - michelefacciniAspirantThe goal was to have rsnapshot running and doing something....actually the addon doesn't produce anything...
I have just done another test on my real NAS and from the putty shell I obtained what I want to be done ( in this particular case the copy of the etc folder ).I used the following command line :
rsync -zvr /etc/ /snapshot/etc
The final goal is to do the same but to have my desktop PC as the destination folder ( I'm doing this step by step....unfortunately I'm far away from being a Linux user and secondly because I first try what can be consider easier ). At the end I want rsnapshot to backup specific files so in case of a disaster on my NAS ( and not being able to boot....), I would have a copy of configuration files (php, addons' config files,....).
I apologize if all this messy, but please consider me a Linux noobie AND IN ANY CASE, I APPRECIATE A LOT THE HELP AND EXPLANATIONS RECEIVED IN THIS FORUM BY YOU AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DEDICATE SOME TIME TO THE NON-EXPERT.
Executing : rsnapshot -t hourly I get this :
rsnapshot encountered an error ! The program was invoked with these options:

Well, of course rsnapshot is not working: That error is preventing it from running.
Edit the /user/local/etc/rsnapshot.conf file and make sure that there is only a tab character -- no spaces! -- on that line between "cmd_rsnapshot_diff" and "/usr/local/bin/rsnapshot-diff". If you find spaces, replace them with a single tab character and then execute "rsnapshot -t hourly" again or "rsnapshot configtest".
Also, when posting text copied from the shell, it is often best to enclose the copied text between
and
tags; that will make it easier to see whitespace properly and will ensure that the forum's formatting rules don't change the text you're copying. For example, here is a section of my rsnapshot.conf pasted without tags:
backup /c/addons-config/ localhost/
backup /c/home/ localhost/
backup /bin/ localhost/
backup /etc/ localhost/
backup /frontview/ localhost/
backup /lib/ localhost/
and here is the same section pasted between
and
tags:backup /c/addons-config/ localhost/
backup /c/home/ localhost/
backup /bin/ localhost/
backup /etc/ localhost/
backup /frontview/ localhost/
backup /lib/ localhost/ - michelefacciniAspirantI edited the original file with Notepad++...normally I use Komodo edit. I've to read what to do to preserve tab when opening files.
- michelefacciniAspirantStill stucked with spaces instead of tabs...

# When sync_first is enabled, it changes the default behaviour of rsnapshot.
# Normally, when rsnapshot is called with its lowest interval
# (i.e.: "rsnapshot hourly"), it will sync files AND rotate the lowest
# intervals. With sync_first enabled, "rsnapshot sync" handles the file sync,
# and all interval calls simply rotate files. See the man page for more
# details. The default is 0 (off).

#sync_first 0
# If enabled, rsnapshot will move the oldest directory for each interval
# to [interval_name].delete, then it will remove the lockfile and delete
# that directory just before it exits. The default is 0 (off).

# network card issues that tend to cause ssh to crap-out with
# "Corrupted MAC on input" errors, for example, set this to a non-zero

Running rsnapshot -t hourly I still get the error at line 208 which says that there's a space instead of a tab between backup /lib/ and localhost/
PS: When opening a file with Komodo Edit,it's possible to specify under 'Current file settings' which kind of file you're editing...I don't know if this could matter...if yes which kind of language do I have to select ?
I tried to edit the file from the putty shell with vi.
If I try to insert a tab with ctrl-v or ctrl-I, I get V not implemented. - fastfwdVirtuoso

I'm going to test now rsnapshot over the network and try to have the destination folder on my Desktop PC..... - michelefacciniAspirantProceeding to tweak my rsnapshot.conf file, I'm actually testing the addon with the USB port as the destination. Here's my question : what's the appropriate FS type to format my USB stick if I want to save entire nas directories ? Should I use EXT3 or EXT4.
FAT32 or NTFS can't be a chosen, right ?
