Best DVR for use with ReadyNAS

Hi-

I currently have a ReadyNas Duo, but am thinking about going to the Ultra2+. Either way, I'm looking for a low cost DVR solution that will allow me to record from cable or OTA, straight to the ReadyNAS. I would even consider a DVR solution that does not even have a built-in HDD, but only relies on an external NAS for recording. Not sure if such a device even exists.
I would still consider a TiVo, but most are very expensive. Is the Tivo integration seemless? This is not a setup I want to see breaking all the time.
The overall goal here is to ditch my cable box, and my cableTV bill.

Thanks in advance
Dan

  • getting a tivo won't necessarily allow you to ditch your cable or bill. it simply records whatever channels you give it (cable or over the air).

as far as I know, the tivo is the only commericial device that allows for external nas storage.

you may or may not find some solutions involving building your own, but thats not anything that is specific to readynas.
  • The TiVo integration has been working fine for me for a quite a while now, but it doesn't work quite like you are suggesting here. Your TiVo records straight to it's internal hard drive as normal. There is a scheduled job on the ReadyNAS that will check what programs are available (and marked to keep forever) on your TiVo's drive and copy them to the ReadyNAS. Now you have the program in two places. It is up to you to delete it from the local TiVo hard drive and/or the ReadyNAS when you no longer require that copy.

It works well to offload things from the TiVo. For example I let it backup all the Christmas movies/specials and then can delete them from the TiVo so I don't see them in available program list on the local drive all the time. Then I can copy them back when the season rolls around again this year.

I canceled my cable almost a year ago now and just use the TiVo OTA. It works pretty well and there are enough local HD channels here to keep the family satisfied.

There are some other great apps available like pyTivo and Streambaby that allow you to serve up other video content from the ReadyNAS to the TiVo.

Don't know where you are, but here in England, you're restricted on what boxes you can use on our cableTV network, and hence, will still have to pay something to them, as they are only leasing you the equipment to receive their service. That said, here in UK, they do give a free package and supply a receiver, but it's little better than Freeview box, (OTA/FTA) and you still have to have one of their other services.

However, I believe you can buy third party boxes, (FTA/PayTV) which allow recording to NAS devices. ;) :shhh:
  • Note that I am based in the UK and this post relates to the Virgin Media TIVO box.

Virgin Media have recently released a firmware update for the TIVO box. One feature within the update is that the ethernet port has been enabled.

I have now connected my TIVO box to my home network and an ip address has been assigned to my TIVO box.

I can access the TIVO box from a browser but all it shows is the list of programmes on the TIVO box. I can't seem to do anything else with them.

I have enabled ReadyDNLA on my ReadyNas Pro and enabled TIVO support. That's about as far as I've got.

I cannot see my ReadyNas from the TIVO box
    and
I cannot see my TIVO box from my ReadyNas

I would be great if I could access and play movies from my ReadyNas on my TV via the TIVO box. I guess the TIVO box would act as a DNLA player.

Has anyone got any further on this or any suggestions....
