Considering Upgrade

Hi everyone,

I'm currently considering upgrading my almost full NV+.

My wish list for the new system is as follows:
# More disk space, with possibility of 3TB drives in future.
# Better performance of Readynas admin page, network copy, etc.
# On the fly encoding if possible for iPad, phone, etc.
# Ability to run scheduled SABnzbd would be amasing! I've read that it's possible with the Atom systems.
# Best system I can afford at time of purchase .... I think this is the current top model.

I've been looking at the following NetGear ReadyNAS Ultra 6 MM, http://www.dabs.com/products/netgear-readynas-ultra-6-mm-desktop-storage-w-iscsi-diskless-72X4.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=product+search&utm_content=Q200.

Additionally, how difficult will it be to transfer my existing data system over ... can I just pull the disks out and relocate them?

Thanks for taking the time to answer these basic questions.

  • you will have transfer your data over the network, you can NOT put your nv+ disks in the ultra and keep the data intact.

generally the best way is to create backup jobs on the new nas, initially start with NFS then after the nfs job completes, modify the job to use RSYNC to ensure bit for bit exact copies.

with the nv+ as the source, I would suggest you backup/copy one share at a time, even the ultra can run multiple backups, the NV+ won't be able to keep with multiples very well.

If you want to transcode to the iPad you should consider the Pro 6 (RNDP6000-200). It has a much faster CPU than the Atom in the Ultra 6.
  • The transcoding to the iPad is kind of iomportant to me now. I have an app on the iPad which allows me to browse and play media from my NV+ but some of the bigger HD files are stuttery while watching, especially during the fast moving action scenes. Would the RNDP6000-200 allow me to stream these at a lower resolution as well?

It's a pitty I can't just swap the disks over as it means I will need to purchase some new drives for the new box, making the old ones redundant not too big issue I suppose. I'm guessing the backup is a lonbg proceedure which I would just need to leave running unattended for a number of days.

Thanks for your responses guys. I will have a bit more of a read about the forums and draw out my purchase decision a little longer! :P

The Pro 6 (RNDP6000-200) has a much faster CPU than the Ultra 6 (RNDU6000), business features and 5 year warranty. The CPU in the Pro 6 is great for transcoding. The Pro 6 can even handle transcoding 1080p content to play on the iPad so I would expect it should work fine with pretty much anything you throw at it.

Whilst you will need to buy new disks you could use the NV+ as a backup NAS.

Using Frontview backup it took me a few days to transfer 3.7TB of data, first via NFS (full backup) then changed backup properties to use Rsync (incremental and verification).

I stream 35GB blu-ray rips to my iPhone 4 over 3G using AirVideo or Plex without any issues.
  • Uint32 - mdgm made a very worthwhile suggestion. After you transfer everything over to the new unit, you will still have the NV+. it would make sense to use it as a backup target for your critical and important data. There is no backup process that is a fast and easy as a NAS to NAS rsync backup. Even though the NV+ is very slow compared to the Pro 6, the rsync process only copies the changed/new data, not the entire file. Most of my rsync backups (4 shares) take less than a minute going from an NVX to an NV+ (NVX is about 30% slower than a Pro 6, but still almost 3x faster than the NV+).
  • Thanks again people.

I reckon I've decided to go for it but in my usual style I will need to read about it and delay for a few more weeks before I take the plunge! Thanks for all your advice guys.

Will be back in a few weeks with more questions!
  • Not sure if it is allowed but can someone post links to UK suppliers of the RNDP6000-200 model?

All I can seem to find is the Atom version, some suppliers really aren't clear with there specs and serial numbers.

    Thanks again.
