"OS6" - a question or three
First, a direct question:
I'm currently running my Pro BE's with 5 or 6 disks using "x-raid2" and "dual redundancy." (RAID6 with the xraid2 expansion scheme.)
I downloaded the manual for one of the new Os6 devices, and it has led me to believe that the new OS no longer supports dual redundancy while using the proprietary "xraid2" expansion scheme. (Page 34 of the software manual states: "If you want to protect your data against the failure of two disks, you must switch to Flex-RAID and select RAID 6. ")
Is this true and accurate?
Second, a more general question:
There doesn't seem to be a post or document that simply describes what has changed between the version 4 software and the new OS6 software. I've seen a couple of threads where people have tried to ask this, but they seem to go unanswered (besides people mentioning that ext3/4 limits are removed with btrfs, and that btrfs supports all kinds of wonderful things that isn't actually supported in the netgear product such as self-healing.)
So, skipping all the marketing hype or netgear add-on stuff such as clouds, genies, and purple smoke in lamps, what does OS6 offer a person or business over the RAIDiator 4 firmware? Please don't include anything that doesn't already exist. (Promises for things that might happen in the future are great, but if they don't ALREADY exist, I have to assume the promises are as empty as the raidiator 4 promise of putting back snapshot resizing.)
Thanks
Gary

- garyd9VirtuosoI'm starting to get the impression that I might have trashed this install and will have to start over again. That sucks - I've been at this all night long. I'm tired. :(
- garyd9Virtuoso@mdgm, unless you have a suggestion (or something you want me to try) in the next few minutes, I'm going to factory default (again) and reconfigure the array (as described above)... and then get some sleep while it rebuilds.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDid you configure a static I.P. on the NAS?
- garyd9VirtuosoNo, it's a DHCP reservation.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHave you tried rebooting?
Have you tried disabling AV?
Note apps and dependencies won't be able to be downloaded till the changes to the apt-get repository are propagated.
You could try changing the sources list to use e.g. the 6.1.8 one as a temporary workaround but some things in that repository might not work well on 6.1.9. - garyd9Virtuosodidn't reboot since it started the rebuild. AV was never enabled. I read someone on the forums that another person (using a 3xx box, I think) lost their available apps when jumping back and forth between XRAID and FlexRaid. I imagine that once I lost it, it can't get it back due to the repo changes?
However, with the overview status screen now missing sections, I'm wondering if I might have trashed something with my liberal use of "apt-get". ;) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNot sure.
Did you manage to install anything?
You could try removing packages you installed to see if that helps or better yet install them over the top of themselves once the apt-get repository is fixed. - garyd9Virtuosonothing install other than the transmissionr6 I did manually, and then the 'transmission' I did via apt-get to fix the dependency. A reboot fixed the "system->overview" page, but not the app list.
I'm going to just factory default again, re-arrange the array, and then go to sleep while it rebuilds. I'll let you know how things work out in 8 or so hours. :) - garyd9VirtuosoDeleting the volume is what causes the app list to disappear. I just went through the steps one at a time, checking the app list after each one. After I deleted the default 'data' volume, the app list page gave a warning about creating a volume. After I created a new RAID6 flex volume and went back to the available apps... it was empty.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDid you use the same volume name or a different one?
Once the volume has synced up again you could try a reboot to see if that fixes it.
If there is still a problem then doing an OS Re-install and/or installing 6.1.9 RC11 over the top of itself may help.
