Performance Difference with 1gb Upgrade?

Hi All,
i have a ReadyNAS NV+ (RND4000) with 4 x 2TB Drives.
this is a brilliant machine, it still running on standard 256mb memory
I can't fault it on streaming speed, it streams a 25gb bluray rip onto the htpc with no issues
Just want to know that people that upgraded to 1gb, noticed an increase on read/write speeds?
its average is 15mb/s with mixed files, large single files it can peak to 20mb/s and sometimes 25mb/s
has anyone got better numbers with 1GB upgrade?
Thanks

  • VQ if you do a search here on RAM upgrades, you will find several threads where folks talk about products that work, and products that don't work. Further, you'll find threads where people have failures and suspect their 1GB upgrade may be to blame. Finally, AFAIK there is no official Netgear compatibility list for RAM upgrades because mfrs change their chip complements/configs/specs w/o notice or explanation so it's impossible to relate a model number with confidence.

My advice to you is that if you are happy with the way your NV+ is working, and it sounds to me like it is working perfectly well and fast, then you should make your best effort to resist all temptation to "upgrade"! It's not broken, don't try to fix it! ;)

P.S. My sig is wrong, as it lists a RAM upgrade which I no longer have in service (I'm back to stock). I had a failure, and a problem too with a firmware upgrade, and after replacing the chassis have not found any reason to install my 1GB chip again.
  • thanks for the feedback max,
I 've read on and off for a while now about people having issues when upgrading.
every time i think about it i have a read and forget the idea lol
just sometimes i wish i could copy abit faster, as i move large files over often.
but as i have above, i cant fault it.
I'm also pleased that Netgear still support this old girl, with firmware etc
  • I think I paid <$30 bucks for my AllComponents chip so it wasn't a big investment, but then I had my failure which WAS a big investment (in time & effort). I can't say for sure the chip was at fault (my problems started when attempting to update the firmware) but it's spooked me so take my advice for what you paid for it... :)

You might give the latest beta software a try; it has some improvements that might help you. Or at least, scour the various threads here about it to see if you can spot any better xsfer numbers than you already have.
  • VQ355 - I have a unique situation in that I have a circa 2004 laptop that uses the same memory as the NV+, and since I upgraded the memory on the laptop to 1GB before buying a new laptop, I tried the memory and it worked just fine. Only problem is that I saw little if any increase in the file transfer rate. Servers don't need a great deal of memory to transfer files. What they need additional memory for is the add ons that people add. After the 1GB module was in my NV+ for several months, I had a problem with my new laptop so had to go back to my old one and pulled the 1GB memory back out and went back to stock.

Now I could have used the stock 256GB memory in the laptop, but even with XP it would run like a dog. (It came with a 256GB module). I never put the 1GB memory back in as I saw no benefit to it.
  • I was in a similar situation; had a lot of extra memory and just happened to find SODIMM's that worked. I upgraded a DUO to 1GB and an 1100 to 1GB but also use an NV with 256mb and an 1100 with 512mb and for what I do I'm not sure I'd bother upgrading them again if it came down to it. YMMV but I find them to be capable with stock memory.
  • thanks for feedback guys,
I'm going to leave her stock, as i do believe if it aint broken, then don't fix it.
  • I upgraded the memory in my duo v1, and while file transfers didnt get any faster, I noticed things like directory listings and the 5 min scene scan on my PS3 popped up faster.

It also was a huge help in using the unit while I had addons turned on. If you are using it as a plain NAS, probably wouldnt bother with it.
