ReadyNAS Duo network problem, can't copy off data
I have a ReadyNAS duo with two 2TB drives using RAID 1. The device boots fine and I can connect to it using the web interface, TimeMachine or CIFS. However, after a few minutes of usage (actively connecting to it and transferring files, not if the NAS is sitting idle) the NAS disappears from my network. When this happens, it doesn't respond to any of the protocols listed above and won't reply to pings. It appears to have disappeared from the network, except the device physically looks fine (activity lights on the network look fine.) When I shut it down via the physical switch and reboot it, it comes back without a problem. There is no indication that it has suffered an error.
I have spent a while looking through the logs and settings and cannot find any indication of a problem. I also have since switched to a new wireless router (same make/model) and the problem continues. I've decided to revert the machine to its factory settings to determine if the problem is software or hardware.
However, as I understand it, reverting it will wipe the drives. Since I don't want to lose my data, I want to copy the contents of the drives off to another machine.
I've tried a few things:
- Use the device as normal to copy the files via CIFS. However, it disconnects and disappears so quickly that I'll never get all the files like this. I can see the data fine but cannot copy it :(
- I've connected one of the drives directly to my computer (Mac) and tried to mount it in Mac OS (with the proper ext2 extensions) and in a VM running Ubuntu (again, with the proper extensions.) Both mounts fail and the disk utility shows no partition on the disk. Someone pointed out to me that since this disk is in a RAID 1 configuration, mounting it in this way won't work.
I'm running out of ideas. Does anyone know either:
A) Why the device is dropping off the network?
B) How I can copy off the data so I can revert to the factory settings?

Have you tried running a backup to an external USB storage?
I have only one more thing on my list to try and this is it. However, I haven't had success in the past because my external USB drive wasn't compatible with the NAS. I was using a FreeAgent drive and I found reports of problems on the forum. I am going to try another drive, but I'm not hopeful. I can go out and buy a new drive that I know is compatible, but this seems like an expensive solution. I'm hoping for another. - Charles_RAspirant

I had the same condition outside of a minor difference with my NV+ v2. Mine would drop when I was transferring files to/from the NAS at faster speeds. Doing such on my 100Mbps network worked great however using an attached USB drive or direct connecting a PC/Mac it would drop regularly.
In my case it proved to be a non-compatible drive (it was listed as supported and later removed). The moment I swapped drives all was fine. Any chance you could try transferrings files slower? - mdredzeAspirantI'm using two WD20EARS drives, which are on the list. The NAS worked fine with them up until recently.
I'm transferring files over a 802.11G network, so I don't think I can get much slower. - FarnorthsurferAspirantI recently had problems with my Duo which turned out to be the power supply unit. Although your symptoms are slightly different.
I used a free program for Windows called R-Linux which allowed me to recover most of my data. Although some was scrambled or not visible. Maybe that will help if all else fails. - talkeasyAspirantDid you resolve this? I have an identical problem.
Thanks. - mdredzeAspirantI bought a new external harddrive and copied the data off through the USB port. The unit disconnects from the network but the copy continues. However, I was only getting USB 1 speeds so I had to let it run for a long time (weeks) and wasn't able to check on the progress. I haven't had a chance to go back and see if it finished copying.
- PapaBear1ApprenticeDid anyone try a direct connection?
- mdredzeAspirantWhat do you mean direct connection?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDirect connection means connecting the ethernet cable directly between the PC and the NAS.
You need to set the PC to use a compatible IP address (making it static) http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... _pc_or_mac
