Retail or Re-furb?

So, I have my 2 new toys. One came inside an external carton. The other came with UPS stickers on the ReadyNAS box (naked). Fine, a shipper/vendor issue. Yes, I did confirm that my 104 day old DUO-V2 box does have the 2 round, thick, tape stickers.

Worse, I find that both ReadyNAS boxes did NOT have the pair of round, thick, 'security', tape circles. e.g. the boxes were not sealed. Yet, i did find one not-used 'round, security tape, sticker' deep inside the ReadyNAS bag for the base device. Odd place for it! :o

Could this mean I actually bought re-furbished/re-manufactured (someone else's RMA return) device?

Or, is this packaging observation just a temporary product glitch? :?

  • Only one of my two (definitely new at the time) NVX units came with the outer box. The outer box may only be used by Netgear when shipping less than a certain amount, and above that a larger shipping carton with several units. The boxes should be blue and white and fairly colorful. While I have never seen a refurbished Netgear NAS in a box, I have purchased plainly labeled a refurbished router (WNR2000) and a refurbished wireless adapter and both came in the plain brown box with just the word Netgear and a sticker with what was in it. The retail box is intended to draw attention, listing features and a picture of the item on it. The refurbished box has none of this.

Any signs the package with the CD and registration card has been opened? Was the package with the screws opened? Any sticky areas where the security circles could have been?

If I may ask, which vendor shipped you the units?

Had a family that I am good friends with buy a Dell computer from Wal-Mart a few years back. They were having problems setting it up. When I went over, it was suspicious because it already had a user set up on it. I advised her to register the unit and she was unable to because it had already been registered (it was also randomly restarting) so on my advice they took it right back. So it does happen with some retailers. I know that if Newegg gets an item back, they will resell it for a reduced price (not if returned as defective) and plainly identify it as an open box item.

You should probably check with the seller.

    StephenB,
The vendor was NewEgg.com. Yes, I suspect the issue is theirs with the lack of outer box/packing material for one of the units.
Now, as both devices are up, updated, running, this *itch of mine is with the vendor will have to wait, or, become an off-line discussion
with the vendor. Perhaps the trouble is in Memphis, TN where my units shipped from? However, both units came from China. Clearly,
somebody is not 'sealing' the Netgear product boxes to my experience.

    PapaBear,
No. The envelope with the CD and registration was OK.

Well, the 'new' internal packaging is just a simple cardboard tray. The baggie holding 8 HD screws was sealed.

No. There were NO STICKY areas on the outside of the Netgear/ReadyNAS box. The primary reason I raised this thread !!

The vendor was NewEgg.com; yet my 2 units were shipped from Memphis, TN.

Yes, I am aware of NewEgg high-jinks! Not much different than other vendors I use. Yes, understand the HG policies. These units may FROM a NG round-robin RMA/Return. I just can not tell ATM. And, I did NOT buy 'Open-Box' choices. Well aware of the NewEgg open-box policies.
    HTH,
  • I have never had an issue with Newegg. All three of mine came from there. Infrant and now Netgear designed the ReadyNAS box so that it could be directly shipped by the retailer to the customer. Yes, it should have had the round tape seals as you have described. They were probably left off at the assembly point as they should be put on by the factory not Newegg. I know I was surprised when my NV+ arrived back in 2007 that it was not in another box. However, since then, I have found that cases are not in another box either, just smaller items. The reason I asked about stickiness is if the seals were in place, cut and then removed, they would have left slight residue of stickiness behind that you can feel with your fingers. Another key to the fact that they are not refurbished units is that they have trays, screws, the CD and the ethernet cable. Refurbished units usually have none of that. There was a post once where a member sent back his unit and included the trays, when he got his new unit, no trays. They sent him a set.

Of course register your new units. Also, when you spin off your Duo V2, work with the new owner and Netgear and they can get the remainder of the warranty and support transferred to them.

If I recall you are going to use one to back up the other. When you are ready to either transfer your data from the Duo V2 or set up the backup and have any problems, hollar at me.

I received several units from Amazon and one of them smelled funny... something about the packing wasn't right. Either it had two stickers (one on top of another), no stickers, the unit's plastic wrap sticker wasn't sealed or whatnot. Everything looked great but after talking to Amazon they suggested I get it replaced just to be safe. The replacement was packaged identically so I'm guessing the assembly line varies at times. :) Amazon ships them in factory double boxes however my local Fry's sells them single boxed (I'm guessing to display the retail packaging).
