RN316+EDA500: Global Hot Spare possible?

Is the following possible?

RN316 with 6 disks, 5 used as RAID5 for volume1, 6th as global hot spare;
attached EDA500 with 5 disks used as RAID5 for volume2;
all disks have same size of 4 TB.

After detection of a disk failure, the hot spare disk should replace the defect disk either in volume1 or in volume2. This should happen automatically, without any user interaction.
Then, after replacement of the defect disk, either in the RN316 or in the EDA500, this new disk should become the global hot spare with the same capabilities.

Thanks.

    Current 6.1.2 code does what you want. As long as there is a free disk in each chassis (Host or EDA500) in Flex-RAID mode, failure disk will get recover with free disk. Note that free disk need to be in same chassis.
  • Jedi Knight,

    I think you have misread the OP.

    mdgm is correct.

    The OP wanted a single hot spare in the main chassis to be able to replace a failed disk in either chassis and then for the new disk that is added to replace the failed disk to become a hot spare for both the main unit and the EDA500 again.
  • Thank you for the replies. So a hot spare disk is not limited to single volume but it is limited to chassis it is in.

    Another question:
    Are volumes also limited to a single chassis or is it possible to create volumes from disks in different chassis'?

    For example, is the following possible?
    RN316 with 6 disks, attached EDA500 with 5 disks,
    all together used as RAID6 for volume1,
    all disks have same size of 4 TB.

    Thanks again.

    Currently we have "Automatic Global Spare" for free disk that in each chassis. So if there are free disk in Host Chassis and Volume in JBOD failed, It will not do auto recovery. So I will have to wait and see if single disk spare can be support on multiples chassis as I have no idea what they will design.

    You can ping PLM for feature request.

    No. You can create single volume across multiple chassis in Flex-RAID mode. I personally didn't recommend this if somehow eSATA cable/JBOD fall out, your volume is dead.
