Service Action to Prevent PSU Failures in ReadyNAS NV/NV+
A Service Action notice has been posted in the Announcement forum to prevent ReadyNAS NV and NV+ systems from premature power supply failures at viewtopic.php?t=10259. If you own a NV or NV+ within the serial number range in the notice, please either download and install the add-on or perform the simple fan reversal procedure. We've seen a small percentage of our customers experiencing power supply failure and we want to avoid any downtime you may encounter due to an unnecessary RMA process.

- eco001AspirantI've had an NV+ (s/n - 000DA2015190) since 4/2007. I noticed the service action when it came out, and loaded the appropriate add-in. I'm now starting to get a burnt insulation smell from the unit. It still works fine, including the fan, and all the temps look good (drives 32-34 degC, m/b 26 degC). Dust has been cleaned out semi-regularly.
Should I preempt a failure, and replace the power supply? Please advise. - eco001AspirantAddendum -
The smell got so strong, I've turned the unit off. Since all the temps looked great, I'm certain this is the dreaded power supply issue. How should I proceed? - chirpaLuminaryGive support a ring, contact numbers in my signature.

It is easy to change the fan and I would be happy to spend a few bucks to get a more silent unit even with a fan running at 2100 rpm.
But I don't fell like choosing only reading the tech specification of fans.
As a long time silent PC fanatic, I have a little experience. http://quietpc.rosboch.net
- Some models of the Scythe S-Flex fans are very quiet. They come in various CFM/noise specs.
- SilenX IXP-64 fans with the forward swept blades are the quietest I have found for the 92 mm size used by the NV+. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835191011
Note that I make no claims about reliability. I have never seen one of the above fan types fail but I have hardly installed enough to build any kind of decent statistics. - SpectreAspirant

Where are the instructions for this procedure? The original link (http://www.infrant.com/download/Enhance ... lation.pdf) does not work.
I am also interested in obtaing this pdf file. Is it available somewhere on the readynas.com site? - gaiasonAspirantDear beisser and chirpa,
I am from Singapore and now has two ReadyNas NV+ that are down at my location.
000D-A201-2AE9 and 000D-A201-35B4
I think both falls within the affected PSU and I have tried contacting my local support from Netgear. Instead I was routed to a foreign support which inform me to contact my local Ingram Micro.
I did that and after many correspondence with their Ingram Micro support "John" and product manager "May" for Netgear which they have totally no knowledge about this problem, they give me the conclusion that the product I have is out of warranty and they cannot do anything about the problem PSU.
Please help me as both of them have valuable data inside and I don't know what other ways now to resolve them, must I really fork out another few hundred bucks to ship the replacement parts from US?
My case no. is 8893799.
Thanks.
Best Regards,
Gaiason - Jerry_LeichterAspirantCould some Jedi Council member please provide current status on this issue? In this very long thread, we have three recommendations: An add-in that increases the fan speed (and the noise) - maybe still valid, maybe not, may not even be available; a fan reversal procedure, described in a file that is no longer available; and replacement of either the fan or the PSU, I'm not sure which.
I recently discovered that my NV+ is in the affected range. I called the NETGEAR service line and opened a service call. The support person I spoke to acknowledged the problem and indicated that Netgear would send a replacement. He transfered me to the RMA department, where the person I spoke to told me that the unit was out of warrantee, she couldn't set anything up, but she asked her manager about it and the manager would call me back. No one has called back yet (though it's only been a couple of days). - samccormackAspirantThe heat this weekend appears to have sent my NV+ over the edge. I started to notice "the smell" on Friday then on Sunday afternoon the NAS suddenly rebooted and when it came back online one of my disks was down (it's dead and is being RMA'd not sure if the failure was related to the PSU failure or not) then while I was syncing a replacement disk the unit shut off by itself (all the lights and fans went off but the LCD screen stayed on oddly) upon investigation I found the thread on here about the PSU failures and sure enough my unit falls right in the middle of that range of unit. Netgear is sending me a new PSU and I should have it tomorrow. Do I need to do anything additional to the unit other than the requisite replacement of the PSU?
- samccormackAspirantGot my replacement PSU. The new one is slightly different from the old one, it has a metal housing covering the components (which should keep the dust off them better) and a plastic shield that I guess is to hold the cable in place. They didn't send ANY directions on how to replace the unit but since I've done computer repairs I decided to just dive in and 12 screws later I had the thing replaced. Now I can see if my data is still there...
This is what the old one looked like when I removed it. I didn't see any obvious signs of damage but the thing sure is dusty and it definitely wasn't working right - dbott67Guide

Just in case someone else needs the instructions:
