access denied Issues
OK,
OK have been reading posts both here and on the windows boards trying to figure out permissions for days. I have had many a NAS, but the current one is a Pro. I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and more recently windows 8 machines (though the current issues predate the adding of an 8 machine). The machine accessing it is a completely new build. It is two weeks old. This problem has gone on for months until I could get to it in detail, and the previous windows 7 (64bit) machine had the EXACT same Problems. So I am pretty sure it is not a specific machines fault. I have recently upgraded to the most recent radiator, which was done from within the Pro itself.
The problem(s). We will assume we are using the media folder and that I am logged into the network drive as admin to be sure I have superuser status:
I can read and play files and copy off of the NAS using a mapped network drive on the windows explorer window with no trouble at all.
I cannot add a new file to the NAS (26% full) out of 12 TB. I have checked the permissions and clicked and clicked user permissions through all of the CFIS, AFP, and HTTP(s). Currently Guest access is checked, Automatically set permissions on new files and folders is checked. Do not allow ACL changes to be more restrictive than this is checked. Default access is read/write enabled. enable oplocks is checked. Under advanced tab Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files is checked.
Share folder owner is nobody. I was not able to change this to the name of the windows machine login account name (or any other name for that matter) which we will call dox1000 for fun, though that is not the real user name for the windows 7 machine (which has no password set on it...perhaps relevant for later). To clarify, the machine boots into administrator user dox1000. There is no other user on any of the machines that access this NAS. There are a few laptops that will read off of the NAS, but rarely, if ever, copy files onto the media share (all shares are suffering from the same permissions issues. There are 12 shares in total.
When this all started going downhill, I did add drives to take the NAS over 10TB to 12TB. The issues began around this time. I have tried multiple other hard drives which never changed the volumes size from 12TB to anything else after the upgrade to 12TB.
Question #1: Do I need to reformat the NAS to use 12TB of drives to make it work?
The next problem is that now every week I get errors that the file system is corrupt and I need to reboot and do a checkdisk to repair it. I do this once a week, and it repairs the files, but it does and does it again the next week. I have already tried multiple drives in this machine, so I do not think it is the drives failing. Other than the weekly errors, there are no other signs of problems. The drives are a mix of the following::
Disk 1 Seagate ST33000651AS 2794 GB , 45 C / 113 F , Write-cache ON
Disk 2 WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 1863 GB , 40 C / 104 F , Write-cache ON
Disk 3 WDC WD30EZRX-00MMMB0 2794 GB , 40 C / 104 F , Write-cache ON
Disk 4 Seagate ST33000651AS 2794 GB , 45 C / 113 F , Write-cache ON
Disk 5 WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0 2794 GB , 41 C / 105 F , Write-cache ON
Disk 6 WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N0 2794 GB , 37 C / 98 F , Write-cache ON
Question #2: Am I making some mistake with the drive configuration I am using?
Question #3 My ReadyNas Pro is a couple of years old now (3-4). Is it failing? How do I check that?
Next problem is that while I can read and play on media players, squeezebozes, computers and the like throughout the house, I can no longer copy anything into the NAS. I can move files on the NAS around, to other folders, but not add anything new, like iTunes playlists or new video files for the media player. I can't delete files, I can't change names of files.
When I delete a file the machine looks like I am actually deleting a file, but then it stays right where it is. So file xy is right clicked and then deleted or dragged to the trash, and it shows the progress bar for deleting, appears in the trash, and then also stays on the NAS, as if I had done nothing.
Right clicking on files shows that they are all read only. Strange considering that nowhere have I ever set that permission, nor is it set anywhere on frontview. This takes me to the logical conclusion (as others have pointed out) that it must be windows 7 permissions. This might actually be the case, yet I cannot seem to fix it.
When i go to the root NAS (call it Bob) and go to the media folder \\bob\c\media and right click on the media folder there and look, sure enough it is all read only. Not strange these days, since every folder on "Bob" NAS is strangely set to read only. Clicking on the read only radio button to remove this restriction causes my computer to happily work like it is doing something for 15 minutes or so and then end with it not changing anything.
Clicking on security for \\Bob\c\media-->right click on media--> click on security tab finds that there are five possible users with permissions to fiddle with:
everyone
nobody
nogroup
CREATOR OWNER
CREATOR GROUP
All of them have special permissions as the only box checked for each one. When I click to give any of them full access, including everyone, it giveses me the \\bob\c\media path name and says that "access is denied".
Now, interestingly, when I click on \\Bob\media\madeupfoldername then the "everyone" user has full access, but all of the other users do not, and now, "admin" is listed as a possible user ( I don't remember if I added admin user at some point in my attempts to fix the problem, so not sure if this revelation confuses thing unnecessarily), though it does not have any permissions other than special permission. "Everyone" user having access does not mean anything else changes.
I am pretty sure that windows 7 permissions is the key to everything, but after days of trying, I cant get access. Moreover, I feel like everything else is tied to this also, since write restrictions could account for a lot of problems. In the past, I was not able to update the firmware due to write issues, but in the past, I did it from downloading the image and then uploading it to the NAS. I am guessing that by doing the update from the NAS itself I was bypassing the permissions issue.
Question #4 How do I beat this permissions issue once and for all. Is it Windows 7 or the NAS that is at fault?
I know this issue appears many times and in many ways in the forums. I have tried reading each and every relevant post and taking its info to heart, but to no avail.
Help me Obi Wan Kenobi. You are my only hope.
Thank you in advance for reading this massive post. Thank you more for imparting wisdom on me so that I may learn to fish.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced User-you can only set the owner to a windows username if you also create a user account on the NAS which uses that same name.
-The c volume is only available to the admin user (by design). So \\bob\c\mediapath requires you to log in with NAS admin credentials.
-Did you try resetting the file permissions/owners via the advanced options tab for each share?
I believe the NAS itself is ok. You can try a file system check or a volume scrub. What firmware are you running? About how long has it been running? - dox1000AspirantThanks Mr.B,
1. I am going to assume that you mean that in order to make windows give permissions to Dox100(who is defined as the admin login user on the desktop I use), there needs to be a NAS user with the name dox1000, and I have to be logged in as that person. My question then becomes why would I all of a sudden need such an account to have write/delete permissions when I never did before? I know it is not optimal, but how would I need to correct this problem assuming I was logged in as admin on the NAS/Mapped Network Drive?
2. I knew C was only available to the admin, but that was the only easy way I could then go in a check what the folder permissions for "media" share when my mapped drive was already the media share. (Hope that makes sense)
3. I have tried setting permissions form the advanced tab many, many times. It does nothing for the permissions to edit/delete files in any share, and specifically the "media" share from windows CFIS access.
4. I do a file system check weekly in order to correct the issues that appear each week during my once a week system integrity check. They are always fixed after the file system check is performed, and they return pretty quickly and are caught on the next weeks scan for errors. The NAS is probably 3.5 years old by now. The firmware is days old, as that was the first time in months I was able to load and install a firmware. I checked again after the install and was told that I was running the newest version for the Pro.
Thanks,
Dox - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I was responding to your comment that you couldn't set the owner to Dox100 in frontview. You can only set the owner to a NAS user account.dox1000 wrote: 1. I have noticed with 4.2.24 firmware that when I drop/drag files a read-only file into a share, that the read-only attribute is preserved even if the CIFS configuration is set to read/write and "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders" and "Do not allow ACL changes to be more restrictive than this" are checked. I don't recall seeing this before, and was wondering if anyone else is seeing this. - dox1000AspirantI had noticed this as well during my testing...
So no one has an answer on how to set my permissions so that my system works again? Please help.
Dox - dox1000AspirantI am still suffering from all of these issues and still have no solution. I have been using my Pro as a read only device, since I have been traveling for many months and could not address the problem. Does anyone else have any thoughts on a solution?
Thanks in advance. - lucifer2AspirantI have the same problem… All of a sudden, I can not copy or create folders to any of the shares on my Ready NAS pro 6 from my MACbook Pro running Lion 10.7.5. I don't get it… I have tried from multiple computers, so I know it is not a Mac thing… I can really use help to understand how to fix it.
- dox1000AspirantI have bad news. Not a single person offered a working solution. I have since bought a 516 and all is working again. Check one thing with your error that I found when doing a backup to see if you have it maybe. I could not do sustained transfers from the pro to the 516 over Ethernet. I had to buy a very large external drive and then everything would copy by USB. I don't know if this is yet another piece to the other trouble, or just something new. I actually bought two 516s, and they talk by Ethernet (all three NAS go into netgear switches and use adaptive load balancing settings) just fine. I do get a periodic error on the 516s when I have been cleaning up that the thumbs files are in use by explorer and cannot be deleted. This has made some folders undeletable. I am still arranging and I will see if this persists after a restart.
Could you post how your Mac is connected to the nas, what settings you are using, and maybe the last thing you did prior to it stopping. What is the error you get?
I am going to RMA the pro since it has 3 months of warranty left and hope it comes home feeling better. It was pretty useless with this error.
Let me know if you solve it and I will be happy to let you know what I have tried privately that hasn't worked.
Good luck.
