Backup not working
I haven't run my regular backup jobs for a month. In that time I have:
Replaced disk #1 after failure & resynced
Replaced disk #2 after failure & resynced
Upgraded to version 4 of FrontView
None of my previously existing Remote: Windows (NAS/Timestamp) backup jobs work. I get an "unable to access remote share" error.
I have tried:
1) Resetting up the backup job - still get "unable to acess" error
2) Swapping forward slashes for back slashes - still get error
3) Verified the backup locations are reachable from other locations on my Windows network.
Attached is a snippet from one of my backup jobs. Any help would be appreciated:

- flexkeethAspirantI can't seem to make it work no matter what path syntax I use. I've tried the computer name (\\FLEX_LAPTOP\SharedDocs) as well as the IP address (\\192.168.2.108\SharedDocs) with both forward and backward slashes. I also tried the ReadyNAS itself (\\Nas-01-a2-3b\backup) (\\192.168.2.100\backup) and even that failed when I pressed the test connection button.
- aaronlyonAspirantI'm still in the same boat. I see there's a firmware update available today, but I'm reluctant to install it remotely (client is 90 minutes away). Any changes that might affect our situation?
- ehgeahrevAspirantme too Ewok. Regardless of what I try, backup does not work.
and you cannot remotely access my NAS to investigate due to blocked ports.
what now? - ewokNETGEAR Expertflexkeeth and aaronlyon,
Are either of you willing to let me debug the NAS remotely? Please send me a PM if you would like me to do so. - ewokNETGEAR Expert

I guess the only option left is for me to continue debugging other people's ReadyNASes and posting the results in this thread. Hopefully one of their solutions will apply to your situation. - nasnewbAspiranthave the same problem...test connection is successful, running the backup fails due to 'unable to access remote path' .
Im trying to back up an older ReadyNAS NV RAID 5 to my new RAID 5 4Tb (ST31000340NS) ReadyNAS NV+/1 Gb RAM by setting up a backup job source old NAS destination new NAS ....have chosen //host/share/path syntax (with the correct leaning for the dashes) for my backup source (Windows/NAS (Timestamp)) and entered the right login and password. Both boxes are CIFS...security mode is share...computer is Wintel XP Pro, etc, router is Netgear GS108...simple set up...cable modem / ip from dhcp server
Have followed the RTFM protocols, the suggestion mentioned in this thread, even the RoadRunner opt out fix. I am running 4.00c1-p2 on the NV+ and 2.00c1-p9 (!) on the NV - no, i never upgrade, b/c 'upgrades' (from any tech company) usually introduce more problems than they solve...
My only guess was that the underlying folders within the source (here, old ReadyNAS NV box) are themselves password protected. THere are no share access restrictions, but in the share list page on the NV, each folder has a password. I removed those passwords, applied changes and tried backing up. No luck. Same error. If I drag and drop (what im reduced to at the moment), I cannot move the main/top level (dunno what to call it) folder from the NV to the NV+. Must create a new folder on the NV+, then select all the contents of that top level NV folder (& these contents may themselves contain folders and subfolders) and drag those over. Thats all that works
Thoughts?

With the new NV+, I am setting up other backup jobs that go to other computers (not to another NV as in the above previous post) identically to how they were done on the old NV....same settings, same path name, etc. BUT they fail the "Test Connection". They work fine on the NV...tried it 10 seconds later.
I did choose Windows/NAS (Timestamp)....that *is* different b/c thats not an option on my NV...just Windows NAS is). But I tried Windows (Archive Bit) as well. that didnt work either
The FAQs/WIKI/Manual werent helpful, either (eg "How do I resolve the "access denied" error during a Backup using the FrontView Backup Manager?
Verify that you are able to access the backup source share over the selected protocol and using the credentials you entered when configuring the backup job. ") The user manual on pg 1-43 is useless....eg, describing only that test connection tests the connection....mentions nothing of the issues around choosing Windows (Archive Bit) that the wiki does (I guess the wiki is the manual de facto?) etc
Is this just not ready for prime time? I know its the weekend, but would really like to know. Im within the return period on the NV+, but have to decide by Wednesday....and have very little time to spend hours and hours on this during the week (Im the unfortunate small business guy - that im sure nobody wants to hear from - not the techie)
On a related note, Im quite happy to pay someone to fix this; I dont need to further my knowledge of network protocols.....and would beat waiting for what im sure would be hours and hours on a vonage line for tech support located at the ends of the Earth in one of Dante's layers. Is there that option somewhere (and not the 3 year $ 60 dollars certificate that allows you to wait forever for 1st level support to read you a CD ROM of instructions you should have read already tech support)? - ewokNETGEAR ExpertTry using rsync for NAS to NAS backups, since it is much more native than the Windows protocols. Also try using the IP address instead of the hostname.

Thank you, I am in the process of trying to figure out rsync for NAS to NAS...although i guess thats really a workaround?
Anyway, what do I do about backing up other computers.....not the NAS.....where the exact same settings produce a fail on 'test connection' on the sparkling new NV+ and works fine on the old NV...same folder names, path names and syntax, sharing enabled on folders to be backed up, etc. Literally, i have two screens open...NV and NV+. NV works fine; NV+ fails. Note also, the shares are added to the NV+ with "Default access" as they were added on the NV
When I choose to run the backup on the NV+ anyway, it actually attempts it but the backup runs for days with no result (no files copied) on a 320Gb folder with many 5-13 Gb home moviesacross a Gb (GS108 Netgear router) network (again, works fine and quickly on the NV; a mess on NV+) ....e.g., the logs say

Any ideas? I have 24 hours left to return this thing; neither nas to nas nor nas to computer backups work properly; there is apparently a workaround i have to figure out for nas to nas...not off to a great start here. - ewokNETGEAR Expert

Not really, rsync has been the preferred method for ReadyNAS to ReadyNAS backups for a long time now (although admittedly, the backup manager should say Windows/Timestamp instead of Windows/NAS (Timestamp) ). Using rsync is pretty direct, using CIFS is basically asking the server NAS to try to be a Windows machine and the client NAS to pretend that the server is a Windows machine. With rsync, there is a lot less pretending going on. :)nasnewb wrote:

That's strange, if it works on the NV, it should work on the NV+. Are they using different firmware revisions?nasnewb wrote:

If you're in a rush, I'd suggest calling the phone number in my sig and speaking to one of our tech support guys who can help you with this in real time.
