Cannot view system data files in ReadyNAS 104

Hi, everyone!

I'm having the above mentioned problem, and I've looked everywhere for a solution. However, none of the replies in similar threads seem to apply to me.

I'm running Windows 7 on my PC and ReadyNAS 6.1.6 on my NAS. What I'm trying to do is to access the NAS' system files (root directory), because I'm having some problems with the Plex Media Server application (which generates a log file that's supposed to be located in /c/.plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs). Regardless, though, access would be nice.

When I enter "\\nasIP\c" or "\\nasIP\data" in the Run prompt in Windows, as I've seen suggested other places, I get nothing ("The network path was not found"). When I enter \\nasIP and log in as admin (I've changed the password from default), I get my shares and home folders, but no system files. I can't find any way to access them via the http admin panel either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Thanks, siigna. I wasn't able to view the files in the file browser. Do you know what the correct volume name is? I guessed "c", "data" and my NAS' network ID. In all cases I get an upload field that was previously inaccessible, where I can upload files to /input where input is what I entered for the volume name (apparently disregarding the rest of the URL), but I can't view any files.
  • siigna, if I am logged in as the NAS admin, I can see c, however I cannot browse the system files or addon folders. If I open c I just get a listing of shares.
Could you explain how SMB access to the root volume and system/ addon files is achieved. I did not think it was possible.

Volume name is "data" by default, or whatever you named it. In my case it's "tank".

Access via the web interface shouldn't be a problem. Here's what mine looks like:

The apps folder is a btrfs subvolume within your main volume. Its actual location is /volume/.apps/, even though we mount it as /apps. It should be accessible in the volume share, but you might have to specify the folder directly (\\nas\volume\.apps\)

Here it is console side from my OS X machine:

    [siigna@voltron ~]$ mount | grep tank
//admin@123.456.789.012/tank on /Volumes/tank-1 (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by siigna)
    [siigna@voltron ~]$ ls -al /Volumes/tank-1/.apps/
    total 256

  • Yes, on my sysrtem it is not possible to browse system files.
Logged in to GUI as admin.
Browse shares, just get a list of shares.
  • That was immensely helpful, siigna! My data folder was simply not visible the way it is in the picture. Only the volumes I'd created with the installled HDDs were listed. I did a full factory reset and it all showed up. Now the data folder, which was previously missing, is accessible via SMB, but I still can't access \\nas\volume\.apps\ or \\nas\apps through Windows, even if I specify the full path. That's not a big deal, though, because I was able to use the URL you provided earlier to access the apps folder through the http interface.

I consider the issue resolved. Thanks again for your efforts, siigna and vandermerwe!

Update: I can access the apps folder through SMB using the path \\nas\data\.apps\

Update 2: Just to clarify, I still can't see the apps folder in the http admin interface either, unless I specify the full path using the URL siigna provided in an earlier reply, using just the https://<NAS_address>/browse.html#path=%2F<volume_name>%2F.apps portion of it. The volume name is "data" by default.
  • It just struck me that the ReadyNAS just puts the apps folder on one of the volumes made with the installed HDDs, rather than storing them in its internal memory with the OS, as I had assumed. This tidbit completely eluded me until now. It's no wonder, then, that there was no folder named "data". Ermaguuurd, duh!
