Duo won't boot, how to proceed?
Hi. I've been getting error emails for some time that disk 1 in my duo was getting increasing SMART errors.
Now it will not fully boot; the power light is steadily blinking, the green disk light for disk 1 is solid green and the LED for disk 2 is blinking.
RAIDar says it is doing a "file system check, 100%" but has been stuck there for a few days. I've tried pulling the power twice and turning it back on, it just does this exact same thing.
Should I remove disk 1 (the one that is probably now dead) and try to boot the NAS? I'm just concerned because I would think the LED for disk 1 would be blinking or off, but the LED for disk 2 is blinking.
Also, of course I have all the contents backed up to 2 USB drives - can I plug those drives into my Ultra 6 and read the contents? I believe the drives would have been formatted as EXT3.

- Others will help you further, but in the meantime:
- check the manual (or on here) - there is a way to reboot and skip fsck
I'd try that first. Then you can at least see what's happening. - Normally the blinking LED is the one that was removed, is failing, or is resyncing.
Maybe try restarting again, but bypassing the file system check?
The ultra should be able to read the USB drives. If they are connected, maybe try removing them when you power down the system to try booting w/o the file system check. - The smart error, did you see what they were - reallocated sectors?
So much easier to sort out as you have a backup. If the edit: restart without fs check doesn't help, you should check the disks with vendor tools after powering off. If disk 1 is indeed the problem then just replace it. If both disks are gone, well just start again. - Hi, first I got a bunch of these alerts:
Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day.
Disk 1:
Previous count: 3122
Current count: 3948
And after about a week or two the emails read like this:
Disk 1 did not pass SMART self-assessment test. Please replace this disk as soon as possible.
I was kind of purposely waiting until the disk failed to replace, as I've seen disks with SMART errors last years & function relatively well.
Had I known it would totally hose my Duo, obviously I'd have acted differently....
I guess I'll find how to boot with bypassing FSCHK and let you know what happens. - I'm not sure I did it properly, but it shows the exact same in RAIDar; "Filesystem check, 100%"
Both HD LEDs are solid green.
The power light is steadily blinking as if it were normally booting. About every 30-60 seconds, the power light will stay solid, the ACT light will blink once, then the power button will continue to blink.
I'll try the boot with bypass FSCK once more... - Instructions on this page, looks like you power off then hold on off button for 5 seconds at power on seeing 1 flash of LEDs.

If it does come up, you can try replacing disk 1 with the NAS running.
Personally I replace disks much more aggressively than you do - esp. in a NAS, where accessing a reallocated sector means a drop in performance due to the increased seek time. I'm pretty sure I have a Duo v1.
I believe I did the skip FSCK correctly, but it's still doing the same; power light is steadily blinking.
What LEDs am I looking to flash? The two HD lights? After I powered it on & held the button, I saw the two HD lights blink once & that's when I released the power button.

Yes, those are the exact directions I followed and it still will not boot.
I will start replacing SMARTy disks much sooner!- Do you have a spare disk to put in slot 1?
