Factory Reset Help

Hello, I'm new to this so please bear with me........I have been trying to update the firmware on my ReadyNAS Duo V2 from 5.3.7 to 5.3.8. I have tried to update it using the Dashboard but this did not work, so I tried to download the file and do it locally.....this did not work :x So I tried to use another computer....same process dashboard and then local but this didn't work either. So finally I brought it to work with me and tried it on our network here. In all instances before the dashboard was available and you could find the NAS with RAIDar. But now I'm not sure what has happened but you can see the NAS on RAIDar and it shows it there, it shows the IP address but you cannot connect to it. When dashboard comes up it always says device off line.
The operating systems I used and the browsers are:

Windows 7 - Firefox and internet explorer
Windows Vista - Firefox and internet explorer
Windows XP (SP3) - Firefox, Chrome and internet explorer
Windows 8 - Firefox, Chrome and internet explorer

I contacted support and they have told me to do a factory reset. I am worried that I will loose all my data on the NAS. As I said its a ReadyNAS Duo V2 with two 1Tb harddrives. It was set to RAID1. I guess my question is:

1) is doing a factory reset the only option?
2) if I do a factory reset will it wipe my data?
2a) if it will (factory reset) wipe my data, if I take one of the drives out and then do the reset and update to 5.3.8 firmware. Then put the harddrive back in (that I had taken out) will it copy the old data on to the drive that was in the NAS when I reset it? Will this data be available to view?

What does support suggest now? Sounds like further troubleshooting might require remote access to your unit. It's possible the 4GB OS partition may be getting full.
  • Sorry it's taken so long to post an update. I contacted support and they are still in the process of sorting out my issue. It seems to take really long for them to get in touch with me to help.

I was wondering if anyone had a way of getting the data off one of my hard-drives. I think the quickest and best method maybe to do a factory reset.

I am by no means an expert so a step by step method would be really helpful. I know how to take the drive out and put it in an enclosure. Once I've done this if I connect it up to a windows PC will it appear as a external drive? Will I be able to access the data easily?
