To date, we've backed up our ReadyNAS Pros using cheap USB drives. This has served us well over the past three years but as we move forward to much larger disks and volume capacity, I'm rethinking this strategy.We'll be upgrading our systems to a configuration of 4 x 4TB drives in XRAID-2 dual redundancy mode. This will give us ~8TB data with two extra bays for expansion.I originally thought to use a USB hub and 2 x 4TB USB drives, splitting the contents of the data across the two disks. But with the cost of a 2-bay NAS like this Synology DS212j (http://amzn.to/1f0NQh2) so low, I'm thinking this would be a better solution since we can take advantage of the device's faster I/O and built-in power scheduling. I wish we could afford to use our Pros as backup and buy new ReadyNAS boxes but we're not there yet. ;)Any thoughts/recommendations on inexpensive NAS for ReadyNAS backup? Brands? RAID modes (JBOD vs RAID 0)? Any gotchas to consider?Thanks!

The RN102 is the Netgear equivalent - same processor speed, and similar performance. I use mine for backup (with 2 WD30EFRX drives installed, jbod). The RN102's frontview backup works well with my Pro-6 as the source. (I'm not suggesting that the Synology won't). The main issue with the RN1xx and RN3xx is that OS6 still has some issues that need fixing.If you are thinking using RAID-0 to spanning the volume over 2 disks, then I strongly recommend against it. RAID-0 spanning drives is too fragile - any failure destroys the volume. JBOD or RAID-0 that doesn't span volumes are the same thing as far as I am concerned. The main issue with multiple backup volumes is that you need to manually balance the storage occasionally.Overall I like backing up to another NAS - it keeps the backup device completely separate from the source.If you need more capacity, then maybe get a four-slot unit - they would be more cost effective.

Yes. One caveat is that the RN102 is using btrfs as the file system. I have had no issues with that, but it is a bit cutting-edge for operational use. It's snapshot feature is quite different from the Pro, and in my opinion more useful. I'd leave the anti-virus scans off (doesn't make much sense on the backup, and slows things down).Also, OS-6 currently lacks disk spin-down. I always run the backups on the destination NAS, it seems better especially if you are combining with scheduled power-on. As always, be careful to not to be aggressive on power-down, since the NAS will shut down even if the backup is not complete. BTW, the RN102 also has WoL, so you could alternatively boot it up from one of the Pros on schedule. btrfs snapshots are described here: https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php ... napshot.3FIf you do incremental backups with snapshots on, then the previous versions of the folder can still be accessed. This does take space of course, and you may not need them. The main value is that it gives you some ability to recover from user error.It's a btrfs file system feature, so the snapshots have to be in the same volume as the folder. OS6 creates each share as a btrfs subvolume, so the snapshots are essentially part of the share. One consequence is that moving files between shares in OS6 is a copy/delete operation - not as fast as on the Pro.When restoring, the snapshot folders would be included (so you might need to delete them before restoring).

If that's the case, I wonder if snapshots would still work if the backup NAS is automatically powered on and off? (btw, I tested sending WOL from Frontview on the Pro and it works great.)

I don't know, 3 possibilities :
1°) NAS is woken up to do the snapshot then put in sleep again (like hasswell mac do)
2°) snapshot is done when NAS wakes up
3°) snapshot is not done

I'd bet on the second option but not sure and can't test right now.

I wish you could do that, but no. In my case it does no harm, since the RN102 isn't big enough to back up the entire Pro anyway (the backup is split across multiple NAS). But it would be better if local and remote options were fully symmetric.

With the daily interval, they are created at midnight on my system. If the NAS is down at midnight, a new snapshot is not created... I'm not sure if the backup itself creates a snapshot or not.

So you might want to coordinate the interval with the power-on schedule to ensure they are created. For instance, create them hourly, start the NAS at 6 am and make sure it is left up for more than an hour after the backup completes (or before it starts).

After several months of testing, we decided it was best to turn "remove deleted files on target" setting ON so that 104 backup mirrors the Pro. It was much too difficult to find files on the backup when they didn't match their locations on the source.

Because we want to backup the entire C volume, we run the backup from the source Pro unit, targeting the 104 backup share as the destination.

This has been working well. The source and backup are mirrors and Rsync takes about 10 minutes or less.

Yesterday I upgraded the 104 to 6.1.6 and turned on daily snapshots for the backup share. But this morning I saw the backup failed with these errors:

It looks like Rsync is walking thru the snapshot folder and trying to delete everything in it so it matches the source. Eventually the backup reached its scheduled stop time and failed.

How do I tell Rsync to ignore the snapshot folder in the backup share?

Another idea:

Would it make more sense to enable snapshots on the Pro rather than the 104 backup? Are snapshots on the Pro kept in a directory outside the C volume? If so, it seems that would solve the problem since we're only backing up C.

Any thoughts?

hmmmm, just tested this on the Pro. While snapshots are indeed outside volume C, the process creates "share-snap" shares for each of our listed shares. It's too cluttered visually and would be confusing for the team. Is this simply the way snapshots work on the Pro, or is there a way to make these "share-snaps" only visible when we need to see them?

snapshots are very different on the pro, and I believe there is no way to modify the behavior.

BTW, I am using rsync to backup shares on my pro-6 to an RN102. The RN102 runs 6.1.6, has snapshots enabled, and removes files not on the source (similar to yours).

I haven't seen the unlink errors you report above. I am wondering if something more fundamental is wrong. Have you tried support?

Good to know. I guess we won't use it then. I don't want folks accidentally opening and saving to the "-snap" shares. And I know they will! :wink: Seems like snapshots are pretty kludgy on the Pro. Am I missing something?

Are you running the backup from the Pro-6 source or the RN102 target? And are you backing up shares or the volume? Last I checked, OS6 didn't allow choosing volume C as a remote Rsync backup source. So we're forced to run the backup from the Pro. Per your recommendations, I'd prefer running our backup from our RN104. I'll check and see if it'll work the way we want in 6.1.6.

I haven't checked with support as I find these forums very helpful but that's a good idea as well.

The backups are run from the RN102 target. I back up shares (none of my backup NAS have the capacity to back up the entire Pro). I don't use home shares, so that is not an issue for me.
