Lost a subdir within a share
Hi All,
Not sure if this has happened to anyone. I'm not also sure if I'm posting in the right forum.
Since I bought and installed my Readynas Ultra 4, I haven't had any issues. I started with 2 3TB hdds and later added 1 more. So I now have 5.4TB with 1.9TB available.
I have 3 shares: media, backup and website. I don't use the website share a lot. I use my Readynas with my Windows 7 Dell Precision M6700. I have 2 standard accounts which I'll call User1 and User2. The active user is the first one and the 2nd one I use mainly to update my wife's iPad and very recently her iPhone5. I was trying to sync the Outlook (Office 2010 Business version) to this iPhone5 when my problem happened.
I maintain 2 iTunes library (for myself and for my spouse) and I store them in the Readynas under the media share. The media share has the ff subdirs: music, ebooks, photos, videos.
I logged on to User2's account. I didn't see the ReadyNAS network shares. I looked around and found out that I did not have access to the shares. But ran RaidAir without any problems. All systems go. Then I opened my browser and accessed the frontview for the network and everything seemed to be working well. So I was wondering why User2 has no access to the shares.
Instead of STOPPING my activity and reading the manual, I went to my Public/Videos folder which had a link to my Videos subdir. Upon clicking, I was asked for the Username and Password to the network/share and I entered the one that I have previously set up for this user when I first installed the ReadyNAS. And it worked. Next, I opened iTunes using my wife's library and synced Outlook and some songs. I logged off from User2 and went back to my own User1 account.
The Music subdir is missing from the media share. I only had ebooks, Photos and the Videos subdirs. I rebooted my ReadyNAS and also my laptop. Still missing. I did a filesystem check from the ReadyNAS frontview. Still missing. I still had 1.9TB free so I'm quite sure that the Music is still there but could be hidden.
What can I do to recover this? I have a backup of Music subdir in an external hdd. It's not the latest (several months old) but it's better than nothing. I actually copied this to the media share and the free space was cut to 1.7TB. So I'm quite sure the missing Music subdir is still there. Is this recoverable?
Thanks for any help.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHave you tried logging in as admin (both via windows and the Web UI http://nas/shares)? If you have the network recycle bin feature enabled, you could also look there.
Also, log into https://nas/admin and look at the system log and health. Click on the SMART+ stats in health, and see if there are any issues with the drives. - Cmaker3AspirantI checked the http://nas/shares and only the website share was there, none for the media and backup shares. But maybe because the http access of the shares are disabled.
I looked at the logs and did not see any issue. However, I may have found something on the SMART+ stats. The 3rd disk had the ff entries where there was none in disks 1 and 2:
Reallocated Sector Count 8
Runtime Bad Block 1
Reported Uncorrect 6
ATA Error Count 6
Unfortunately I don't have Network Recycle Bin turned on. I didn't even know about that feature. Can you tell me how to turn this feature on?
So what's the verdict? Can I access the nas drives (at the low level) using a utility that will show partitions? Am I even making sense with this question?
Thanks.

That would explain it. Maybe enable http for the media share.Cmaker3 wrote: I checked the http://nas/shares and only the website share was there, none for the media and backup shares. But maybe because the http access of the shares are disabled.
Keep a close eye on that disk - ideally turning on email notification. If those counts start to climb, replace it.Cmaker3 wrote: I looked at the logs and did not see any issue. I don't use it myself. But you will find the "Enable Recycle Bin" checkbox in the CIFS tab for each share.Cmaker3 wrote: Unfortunately I don't have Network Recycle Bin turned on. I didn't even know about that feature. Can you tell me how to turn this feature on?
You can go into the NAS with ssh and see if you can find or recover the files. Though that requires linux command line knowledge.Cmaker3 wrote: ...Can I access the nas drives (at the low level) using a utility that will show partitions?
I would suggest doing the following (in order).
(a) log into the NAS as admin (using Windows explorer) and go into the "c" folder and then "lost+found". See if your files are there.
(b) set up windows explorer to view hidden files (there is a view option for that) and look in media for the subfolder.
(c) If those fail, try netgear support (support.netgear.com)
If you can't get support
(d) go into shares->share listing and then select the "advanced options" tab for "media" and check the "Set ownership and permission for existing files..." checkbox. Then click apply, and either wait for the completion pop-up or the log entry showing completion to appear. Then look for the subfolder again.
(e) back up your existing file, and then try rebooting with a file system check. - Cmaker3AspirantAs always thanks for the reply. I didn't reply back asap because I did try to contact support. They looked at the logs and couldn't see why the subdir in question, Music, disappeared. So they'd like to do a telnet session. To be honest, I'm not one who like people poking into my stuff unless necessary. So I'm going to try out your suggestion of using ssh to go figure out what happened. I know a bit of linux so this isn't new territory.
Thanks. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Your choice of course. I have let them telnet into my RN102 to diagnose/fix stuff. There are problems that simply can't be figured out any other wayCmaker3 wrote: ...To be honest, I'm not one who like people poking into my stuff unless necessary... - Cmaker3AspirantHi StephenB,
Thanks for the advise. I did get in touch with tech support to go ahead with the telnet session. And he gets back to me that my port 23 is closed and that I need to open it up. I know that port 23 is used by FTP, I think, so I asked him how I could do this and he tells me to contact my router manufacturer. Hmmm... some tech support. I figured I'd get better info via the forum. So can you please help me out?
My ReadNAS is already in Telnet Mode and the display says "DebugMode[510960]. I also can't access it from my laptop. To open port 23, do I need to enable FTP via Frontview? If so, I guess I have to do a normal reboot of the ReadyNAS. Am I correct in my assessment?
Thanks in advance for the help. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserPort 21 is for FTP, port 23 is for telnet.
"Opening the port" is done in your router, not the ReadyNAS - which is why the support guy told you to check your router manual. Look for port forwarding. What router do you have? - Cmaker3AspirantThe readynas is behind a private router, together with my laptop since I use this for my home business. It's a N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400 from Netgear. And it's behind my internet router, where the rest of my family connects including a streaming device. It's also from Netgear, a N300 Wireless Router WNR2000 v3. Do I need to open both ports? If I do, when all is said and done, should I close the ports that I opened?
Thanks again, in advance. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou need to forward port 23 in the WNDR3400 to the WNR2000's "WAN" address. Then forward port 23 in the WNR2000 to the NAS IP address.
After tech support is done, you should close the ports. - Cmaker3AspirantThanks so much for your help. But it seems that I've "discovered" what happened to the lost Music subdir. As I was about to sync (Freesync) my ebook subdir to an external drive, I was surprised that the amount of data for syncing was so huge. Answer: the Music subdir was included. So I deleted the one I created a few days back but found that I couldn't delete all the contents so I just renamed it. I then moved the Music subdir to its rightful place. Problem solved... or so I thought. I couldn't access two of the subdirs under Music. Whenever I try it says "Access Denied". It seems like there is no owner of these inaccessible folder. All of my other folders have as their owner: Domain\nobody. I tried to change the ownership but I can't. When I try to do it, a Windows Security dialog opens asking me for a Username/Password for an account that has access to the ReadyNAS. I tried to use the admin/password or one of the accounts I've authorized but it only produces an error "object nobody not found or something." Do you have any advise... before I close the case with Tech Support? Or would you suggest that I let Tech Support assist me with my "Access Denied" issue. Thanks in advance... as always.
